Auburn City Schools teacher's aide arrested for allegedly slamming student to ground
AUBURN, Ala. () — An Opelika man who worked as a teacher's aide for Auburn City Schools has been arrested on a felony charge of willful abuse of a child after allegedly slamming a 9-year-old student to the ground at an Auburn elementary school.
Auburn police arrested Quendesmond Jamaad Kellum, 32, on March 25, 2025, following an investigation into an alleged incident the previous day at a location in the in the 1500 block of North Donahue Drive, which is Yarbrough Elementary School.
According to court documents, Kellum, who was responsible for supervising children as part of his role with Auburn City Schools, is accused of forcibly slamming a 9-year-old male student to the ground. Auburn police have not released further details about the child's condition but have not indicated any severe injuries.
A felony arrest warrant was issued, and Kellum was booked into the Lee County Jail on a $10,000 bond. According to court records, he has since bonded out and is scheduled to appear in court in May. WRBL spoke with Kellum on the phone after he made the bond; he says he is consulting with his attorney and does not have a comment.
Auburn City Schools spokesperson Daniel Chesser provided the following statement to WRBL:
'Auburn City Schools is cooperating with law enforcement officials in an ongoing investigation. Due to the nature of this matter, no further public comment will be made available.'
Auburn City Schools rely heavily on surveillance video in student areas, except for private locations like restrooms. However, Auburn police have not confirmed whether there is video evidence of the alleged incident.

OPELIKA, Ala. (WRBL) — A Union Springs teenager has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Jamiyah Grant in an Opelika park Saturday night. Opelika Police confirm 18-year-old Timothy Shell Jr. was taken into custody Sunday, June 8, and charged with murder. The arrest follows a deadly shooting at Bandy Park on June 7 around 8:30 p.m. According to investigators, a group of people had gathered in the park when an argument broke out. Moments later, shots were fired, and Grant was struck. Officers arrived to find her suffering from a gunshot wound. Police say she tried to drive away but collided with another vehicle before being rushed to East Alabama Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead. 16-year-old girl killed in Saturday night shooting at Opelika alumni celebration
Opelika, Ala. (WRBL) – A 16-year-old Opelika girl was shot and killed Saturday night at George C. Bandy Park, where hundreds of people were gathered for an annual Alumni Day celebration. Jamiyah Grant was struck by gunfire during the large community event and transported by EMS to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika. Despite emergency resuscitation efforts, she was pronounced dead at 9:34 p.m., according to Lee County Coroner Daniel Sexton. 'This was supposed to be a joyful night.
