Himachal govt launches face authentication in public distribution system
Shimla, Aug 1 (PTI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena on Friday launched the face authentication in public distribution system, emphasising the importance of achieving hundred per cent Aadhaar saturation across the state.
He was chairing a review meeting with all departmental heads of the state government and the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) here, an official statement said.
During the meeting, officials informed that that Himachal Pradesh is leading the country in terms of Aadhaar generation of the children aged below five. The national average is 39 per cent whereas the state has achieved 56 per cent coverage.
According to the statement, Deputy Director General (UIDAI) Dhiraj Sarin was also present in the meeting.
Himachal Pradesh has made significant progress over the last three months and the pendency of mandatory biometric update has decreased from 5.5 lakh to 4.75 lakh, the statement added.
In the meeting it was also notified that the department of digital technology and governance in collaboration with the education department has arranged multiple camps in the schools to cover the mandatory biometric updates.
The chief secretary directed to cover private schools as well to reduce the pendency of mandatory biometric update, which were to be carried out on attaining the ages of five and 15 years.
Saxena further directed to deploy Aadhaar kits at immunisation centres to cover Aadhaar enrolment of zero to five age group. The health department, department of digital technology and governance and India Post Payment Bank (IPPB) would facilitate Aadhaar enrolment for children below five years, ensuring their complete coverage.
He also directed all the departments to ensure Aadhaar based authentication of beneficiaries for various services and digitisation of documents released by the state government. PTI BPL SHS OZ OZ

Karnataka IT Minister Priyank Kharge on Tuesday said the state is talking to companies to evaluate the impact of AI on workforce and the assessment is expected to be completed in about a month. NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that sweeping reforms introduced by his government over the past 11 years have transformed India's governance model into one that is transparent, sensitive, and citizen-centric. Citing the success of the JAM (Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and Mobile) trinity, Modi said that the initiative had plugged massive leakages in welfare schemes and prevented the theft of over Rs 4.30 lakh crore that was allegedly being siphoned off through 10 lakh fake beneficiaries under previous regimes. "Approximately 10 crore beneficiaries listed under various schemes such as the ration card, gas subsidy, and scholarships were found to be nonexistent. These individuals, who never actually existed, were being used by previous governments to funnel money to middlemen. However, these 10 crore fake names have now been removed from the list of beneficiaries by the incumbent government. According to an estimate, this cleanup has resulted in savings of over Rs 4.30 lakh crore, which would have otherwise gone into the wrong hands. Imagine theft of Rs 4.30 lakh crore. Now, this amount is being used for the development of this country," the prime minister said. PM Modi was speaking at an event at Kartavya Path after inaugurating Kartavya Bhavan (Common Central Secretariat Building) 3, the first of the 10 state-of-the-art Central government office complexes planned as part of the Central Vista redevelopment plan. These blocks will house offices of all ministries and associated departments, presently functioning from Shastri Bhawan, Krishi Bhawan, Udyog Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, North and South Blocks and other buildings located at different locations.

Trump's 50% tariffs on India! which sectors will impact? study says ‘estimated impact of…'
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on Indian goods, which will take effect from August 7. This move raised major concerns about its potential impact on the Indian economy. However, there's some good news a new report suggests the impact will be minimal. According to a study by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), the tariff is expected to affect India's GDP by only 0.19%, which is almost negligible. Out of India's total exports worth $86.5 billion, only $8.1 billion around 1.87% will be affected by this move. Trump Tariffs: What PHDCCI Study Says? The paper, released by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), also recommends a series of measures to mitigate the impact of US tariffs. 'Our analysis indicates that there will be an estimated impact of only 1.87 per cent on India's total global merchandise exports and a negligible 0.19 per cent on India's GDP as a result of a 25 per cent tariff announced by the US on India,' said Hemant Jain, President, PHDCCI. The study said the total potential export impact is estimated at USD 8.1 billion based on 2024-25 merchandise exports of USD 86.5 billion (1.87 per cent of India's total global export). Which Sectors Will Impact By Trump Tariffs? Among other sectors, the study said the levies would impact engineering goods (USD 1.8 billion), gems and jewellery (USD 932 million), and ready-made garments (USD 500 million). In the wake of the US tariffs, the industry body has recommended several measures, including increasing market penetration, product development and market diversification. It suggested that stakeholders should negotiate bundled-pricing deals (textiles plus accessories) to absorb some tariff cost and maintain shelf-price competitiveness. 'Leverage Indian diaspora networks (trade fairs, cultural events) to boost volume with existing buyers under current product portfolios,' it said. PHDCCI also made a strong case for investments in joint ventures with US firms to produce tariff-sensitive goods on-shore, thereby converting exports into high-value services and intellectual property (IP) licensing.
