Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 53: a history of the number and who wore it best
Current Steelers No. 53 wearer: OLB Eku Leota
Heading into the 2025 season, OLB Eku Leota is the current Steelers wearer of No. 53. The outside linebacker signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2023 — where he would remain until being released on September 21, 2024. Less than two weeks later, the Steelers signed Leota to their practice squad — ultimately appearing in just one game in 2024 for Pittsburgh. He would sign a Future/Reserve contract this past January — but faces stiff competition to make the 53-man roster due to a loaded outside linebacker room.
Last five Steelers to wear No. 53:
Best No. 53 in Steelers history: C Maurkice Pouncey
When it comes to No. 53, no Steeler wore it better than C Maurkice Pouncey. Drafted by Pittsburgh with the 18th overall pick in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft, Pouncey served as a long-time leader of the Steelers' offensive line for over a decade, tasked with protecting the legendary Ben Roethlisberger. He played in 134 career games and started every one of those contests for the Steelers. Pouncey's stellar play resulted in two First-Team All-Pro selections and three Second-Team All-Pro selections — while also being named to nine Pro Bowls. For his achievements, he was named to the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team — and there is no honor more befitting than to be recognized as the greatest Steeler to ever wear No. 53.

Where Alabama lands in 247Sports' preseason SEC football poll, predicted order of finish
With another SEC media days is in the book, more early evaluations on the 2025 college football season within the conference that "Just Means More" are tricking in. Only six weeks remain until Alabama kicks off the season against Florida State on Aug. 30 at 2:30 p.m. CT. Not only will it mark their first ever visit to Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, it will also be the first time in 25 years the Crimson Tide have opened a season in a true road game setting. Alabama-Florida State will be televised on ABC. As the SEC was wrapping up media days this week, the staff at 247Sports released their annual preseason SEC poll. Alabama landed at No. 4 behind two teams you'd probably expect by this point -- Texas at No. 1 and Georgia at No. 2 -- and one that's pushed its chips all-in on 2025. LSU was ranked No. 3 ahead of the Crimson Tide. It's still a strong ranking for Alabama, one that reflects the belief many in the media share about coach Kalen DeBoer's ability to win in the SEC as he enters his second season in Tuscaloosa. The SEC's own preseason media poll, announced Friday, had the Crimson Tide at No. 3. Veteran USA TODAY Sports college football writer Paul Myerberg also had Alabama at No. 3 in his preseason SEC power rankings this week. Myerberg said of the Tide: "It won't hurt to have slightly lower expectations and a somewhat softer spotlight on Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide after winning nine games in his debut. Ty Simpson is expected to take over under center and will operate behind a very strong offensive line with plenty of weapons at his disposal. The defense is the best in the front seven. Overall, this is a very talented team capable of winning the SEC and the national title." 247Sports full 2025 SEC football preseason poll, projected order of finish Here's the full 247Sports preseason SEC poll and predicted order of finish heading into the 2025 season. 1. Celtics Suggested as Trade Destination for 3-Time All-Star Big Man
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Celtics have had an interesting offseason. Brad Stevens had to trade away two key pieces of the team's core to get luxury tax relief and Jayson Tatum is early on in his recovery from tearing his Achilles during the team's second round playoff series against the New York Knicks. Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis were both traded. Al Horford also isn't expected to return to the Celtics next season. Add in the fact that Luke Kornet also left the team in NBA free agency to sign with the San Antonio Spurs, and Boston has a major question mark at the center position. Could Stevens look to address that issue this offseason? Photo byThat is something that has been suggested. Read more: Report: Celtics Still Considering Two More Offseason Trades Connor Thomas of Bleacher Report has come up with a trade idea that would land a three-team All-Star big man in Boston. He suggested a potential trade for Sacramento Kings star Domantas Sabonis. In his trade idea, Thomas suggested Sabonis heading to the Celtics in exchange for Anfernee Simons, Sam Hauser, Georges Niang, Neemias Queta, and two first-round picks. Giving up that much in a trade would be a major swing for Boston. However, Sabonis is the kind of player who would be worth swinging for the fences to acquire. During the 2024-25 NBA season with the Kings, Sabonis continued his elite level of play. He played in 70 games, averaging 19.1 points per game to go along with 13.9 rebounds and six assists. Sabonis did all that while shooting 59 percent from the floor and 41.7 percent from the three-point line. Read more: NBA Scout Brutally Rips Into Lakers' LeBron James for Offseason Drama At 29 years old, Sabonis would fit the timeline that the Celtics currently have. He has two years left on his deal following the 2025-26 campaign. That would give Tatum plenty of time to get back to full health with Sabonis on the roster. Sabonis also still has a handful of good years left playing in his prime. A new "big four" of Sabonis, Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Derrick White would make Boston a top-tier contender for years to come. Of course, this is just an idea. If the Celtics were to pull off this kind of a blockbuster trade, they would need to add more depth off of the bench. It's an interesting idea, although it is a bit far-fetched. For more on the Boston Celtics and general NBA news, head on over to Newsweek Sports.
