Martin revels in 'incredible' support from Ferguson

Yahooa day ago
Russell Martin says the support he has had from Sir Alex Ferguson since taking over as Rangers head coach has been "incredible".
The former Manchester United manager paid his first visit to the club's Auchenhowie training centre on Friday, in the company of Rangers great John Greig.
Ferguson, 83, played for two seasons at Rangers from 1967-69, while Greig, 82, spent his entire career at Ibrox before a five-year spell as manager.
"Any team talk or message I give is done when those two speak about this club and what it means to them," Martin told RangersTV.
"They are both really behind us and what we are doing. They are desperate for this team to do well.
"They feel the same way as the fans. They want to see a team that fights and works for everything and has a way about them on the pitch that exemplifies what they believe this club to be about."
Martin played under Sir Alex's son Darren Ferguson at Peterborough United who made him captain when he was just 21.
"He reached out and said his dad wanted to give me a call," Martin added.
"I said 'of course' and since then Sir Alex has been in tough regularly. He's been great. He's been so supportive of me personally, which is incredible.
"It's the first time he's been here and it was just brilliant for everyone to see him."

Tara Moore, British tennis player given four-year doping ban, says system is ‘broken'

Tara Moore, the British tennis player given a four-year ban for a doping violation, says 'the anti-doping system is broken.' Moore's ban was confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last Tuesday. After returning a positive test for the anabolic steroids boldenone and nandrolone following a tournament in April 2022, an independent panel ruled that Moore bore no fault or negligence in December 2023, only for the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) to appeal that decision to CAS. Advertisement CAS ruled in the ITIA's favor, at the same time dismissing a counter-appeal from Moore, who was previously Britain's No. 1-ranked doubles player. The 32-year-old's four-year ban is minus the time she served while provisionally suspended, which began following her adverse test result from the tournament in Colombia. She will be able to return to tennis at the start of the 2028 season. 'The last three-and-a-half years have broken me into so many pieces,' Moore said in a statement on social media Sunday. 'As my family and friends have scrambled to pick up the broken shards of me, they've glued me back together in the form of a different person. 'I don't need a panel to tell me I'm innocent. I know the integrity I bring and I know I am innocent. I believe everyone over the past couple of years can see how subjective this process is. 'I have been the underdog. I have had my life as I knew it ripped away from me because the organisations and people in power failed to do what was right. They may have taken my fight away on the court, yet my fight is not over, not for me or others like me. 'The anti-doping system is broken. I am proof of this. We need to fix it. Not for me as it's too late, but for future players who find themselves in this unfortunate situation. I have so much more to say when the time is right.' Moore had argued that the presence of boldenone and nandrolone in her sample had been caused by the consumption of beef and/or pork while in Colombia. 'After reviewing the scientific and legal evidence, the majority of the CAS Panel considered that the player did not succeed in proving that the concentration of nandrolone in her sample was consistent with the ingestion of contaminated meat,' the court said in Tuesday's media release. 'The Panel concluded that Ms. Moore failed to establish that the ADRV (anti-doping rule violation) was not intentional. The appeal by the ITIA is therefore upheld, and the decision rendered by the independent tribunal is set aside. The cross-appeal filed by Ms. Moore was declared inadmissible.' Advertisement Doping has been a highly contentious issue for the sport in recent months following the positive tests and subsequent bans served by men's world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and four-time French Open women's champion Iga Świątek. Both players went on to win their respective singles titles at Wimbledon last weekend.

United set to discover extent of Graham injury

Dundee United will discover the full extent of an injury suffered by defender Ross Graham next week, says manager Jim Goodwin. The 24-year-old centre-back has reportedly sustained a hamstring issue and Goodwin is awaiting news from specialists. Speaking after his side's pre-season draw with Oldham on Sunday, Goodwin told United's club media: "The only negative aspect [of pre-season] has been the injury to Ross Graham. "We'll find out the full extent of that in the early part of next week when we get opinions back from the specialists. "The other injuries [in the squad] are normal at this time of the season. Jort van der Sande should be back in contention in the next couple of weeks." The competitive action starts on Thursday for United in the first leg of their Conference League second-round qualifier against UNA Strassen. The Tannadice side are heavy favourites in the tie, but Goodwin says they "won't underestimate" the outfit from Luxembourg.

Date: Sunday, July 20, 2014 Venue: Stadio Rodolfo Zandegiacomo, Auronzo di Cadore Fixture: Lazio – Indonesia U23 2-0, Pre-Season Friendly Two goals, a missed penalty and three posts against the Indonesian U23 In Memory: João Fantoni João Fantoni, in Brasil also known as Ninão or Juan, was part of a bunch of Brazilian 'oriundi' who in the early 1930s arrived in Italy looking for a team that would take them on. The 'oriundi' were those foreign players with Italian ancestry who could play in Italy as Italian nationals. Just as an example, for the World Cup of 1934, there were six oriundi in the Italian squad. Attilio Demaría and Luis Monti had even played in the 1930 World Cup for Argentina. Born in Belo Horizonte on July 24, 1905, João Fantoni joined Lazio with his cousin Octavio in early 1931 and they were the forerunners of a bunch of players who arrived the next season: defenders Armando Del Debbio, Pedro Rizzetti, Enzio Enrique Serafini and forwards José Castelli, Alejandro Demaria, Anfilogino Guarisi and André Emanuel Tedesco. There was even a player-manager, Barbuy Amilcar, who coached Lazio in the last few games of 1930-31 and the entire 1931-32 season. This was the period which many call 'Brasilazio' and many of the players stayed until 1935. The majority left because they were afraid they would be called to arms as Italy was at war with Ethiopia. The two Fantoni's were later joined by Leonidio, brother of João in 1932. Another brother, Orlando, played for Lazio in 1947. João Fantoni made 113 appearances with 39 goals. He was a very good forward. His five years in Rome will always be engraved in his family history as his first child was born in the eternal city and was named Romano Benito. The latter name was apparently in gratitude to Mussolini who had promised to cover all the hospital costs if Fantoni scored in the derby (he did score, even if Lazio lost 3-1). He died on July 19, 1982, in Belo Horizonte. Birthdays This Week Samir Handanovic, 14-7-1984, goalkeeper, Slovenia, 1 appearance (2006-07) Bruno Nicolini, 14-7-1904, goalkeeper, Italy, 24 appearances (1925-29) Marco Di Vaio, 15-7-1976, forward, Italy, 18 appearances, 6 goals (1993-95) Marius Stankevičius, 15-7-1981, defender, Lithuania, 16 appearances (2011-13) Jaap Stam, 17-7-1972, defender, Netherlands, 94 appearances, 4 goals (2001-04) Bob Lovati, 20-7-1927, goalkeeper, Italy, 147 appearances (1955-61, manager, assistant and many other things!!!)
