Bangalore University denies allegations of anti-Dalit policy, says no discrimination to Dalit staff
Recently, around 67 professors belonging to SC/ST communities have written a letter to the Vice-Chancellor alleging discrimination in statutory appointments, violation of reservation norms, and delay in filling backlog posts and given a 15 days deadline to set things right.
The university issued a clarification on Friday stating, ' Appointments of statutory posts such as Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Finance Officer, and Registrar (Evaluation) are made directly by the government. the university has no role in these appointments. It is unfortunate that these appointments are being viewed as discriminatory. At the university level, wherever appointments are within its control, SC/ST faculty members have been given preference. Out of 30 administrative positions like Directors, Coordinators, Special Officers, and Nodal Officers, 22 posts are held by SC/ST teachers.'
Further, it stated that four faculty members were transferred to Bangalore University from other universities by the State government with the Governor's approval, considering the shortage of permanent teaching staff. 'Currently, out of 126 teaching staff at the university, 80 belong to SC/ST communities, which is 63.5% of the total faculty,' it added.
The university also pointed out that no other public university in Karnataka has filled backlog vacancies to the extent that Bangalore University has. Out of the 55 backlog posts identified by the Social Welfare Department, 35 have already been filled, and the process to fill the remaining is underway. 'In the academic year 2024–25, 44 faculty members were promoted as Associate Professors, out of which 29 belong to SC/ST categories,' it clarified.

Naxal killed, three security personnel injured in Chhattisgarh encounter
Sukma, July 29 (PTI) A Naxalite was killed and three security personnel were injured in an IED blast during an encounter in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district on Tuesday, a police officer said. He said a joint team of security personnel on an anti-Naxal operation and Maoists exchanged fire in the forest along the Sukma-Dantewada inter-district border. The operation, involving personnel of the Special Task Force (STF), District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), was launched on Monday based on inputs about the presence of Maoists in the area, said Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan. During the search of the encounter site, security personnel found the body of a male Naxalite along with a huge cache of arms, ammunition, and explosive materials. 'Three personnel belonging to DRG sustained injuries in a pressure IED blast during the operation. All injured personnel have been safely evacuated and are being referred to higher medical centres for advanced treatment. Their condition is currently stable and out of danger," Chavan said. He said that as the operation is still underway, other details cannot be discussed. With the latest gunfight, 226 Naxalites have been killed in separate encounters in Chhattisgarh so far this year. Of them, 208 were eliminated in the Bastar division, which includes districts of Bijapur, Bastar, Kanker, Konadagaon, Narayanpur, Sukma, and Dantewada. TN IT engineer murder: DMK allies seek law against honour killing
Tiruneveli/Chennai, Jul 29 (PTI) With the alleged honour killing of a Dalit IT engineer in Tamil Nadu sending across shock waves, allies of the ruling DMK on Tuesday demanded a separate legislation to handle such incidents. The victim, 27 year-old Kavin Selvaganesh was hacked to death by a youth, allegedly over an inter-caste relationship near a Siddha facility in the southern Tirunevlei district on Sunday. The victim was employed as an engineer with a software firm in Chennai. Thol Thirumavalavan, VCK chief, an ally of the ruling DMK, demanded legislation to prevent honour killings. 'It is said the woman's parents, who were involved in this gruesome honour killing, have not been arrested. They must be arrested and removed from (police) service," Thirumavalavan said in a statement here. He sought the transfer of the case to a special investigating team for fair probe. 'It is distressing that caste-based honour killings and casteist attacks continue to occur, particularly in the southern districts. We reiterate our demand for the creation of a dedicated intelligence unit in the police department to curb such caste-based atrocities," he said. 'The occurrence of such caste killings in many parts of Tamil Nadu, especially in the southern districts, is a cause for concern. The government contends that the existing criminal laws are sufficient, but the ongoing caste killings underscore the need for a new law," he said in a statement. He also sought appropriate compensation and government jobs for Kavin's family. The suspect, S Surjith, has been arrested on July 28 and remanded. According to a police officer, both Saravanan and Krishnakumari, the parents of the accused, are police sub-inspectors, and they have been placed under suspension following the incident. Senior police officials went to the house of Kavin Selvaganesh to console his parents and provide relief. However, his parents declined to accept the relief and demanded the immediate arrest of the SI couple as justice for their son's murder. A case has been registered against the SI couple and their son Surjith under various sections of BNS and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, police said. Police investigation revealed that on July 27, the victim, Kavin had gone to KTC Nagar to consult the woman, a Siddha physician, about his grandfather's health condition. He was accosted by the woman's brother Surjith who invited him home for a discussion. Trusting him, Kavin went along with him. But enroute, Surjith abruptly stopped his two-wheeler, pulled out a sickle and indiscriminately attacked Kavin, police said. Though Kavin attempted to flee, Surjith overtook him and hacked him to death, police added. Meanwhile, On Tuesday, the relatives of Kavin staged a protest in neighbouring Tuticorin district, demanding justice for him. One of his relatives attempted to immolate himself, but the police present on the spot poured water on him and thwarted the attempt. Tej Pratap dons new colours: Repentant son is now angry rebel talking of ‘Jaichands'
Days after announcing his decision to contest the Bihar Assembly elections as an Independent candidate, Tej Pratap Yadav, the estranged elder son of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad, launched a sharp attack against his former party over the alleged actions of an RJD MLA. Since his expulsion from the RJD in May, over a now-deleted photo with a woman allegedly posted on his Facebook profile, Tej Pratap's tone towards his former party has shifted from reconciliatory to adversarial. In a social media post on Monday, Yadav questioned the RJD's silence over senior MLA Bhai Virendra allegedly threatening to beat a panchayat secretary, accusing the party leadership of 'selective action'. 'Kya RJD apne vidhayak Bhai Virendra par bhi karwai karegi, jinhonete Baba Saheb Ambedkar ke adarshon ke ullat SC-ST samaj ke khilaf sharmnaak tipanni ki, jaan se maarne ki dhamki di? Mujhe to Jaichandon ki saazish ke tahat party se bahar kar diya gaya… Ab dekhna hai ki bawaal karne waalon par bhi party utni hi sakhti dikhayegi ya nahin (Will the RJD also take action against its own MLA Bhai Virendra, who, defying the ideals of B R Ambedkar, made a shameful remark against the Scheduled Caste-Scheduled Tribe community and issued death threats? The former RJD leader was commenting on the controversy surrounding Virendra, a four-time MLA from Maner and close aide of Lalu Prasad and Tejashwi Yadav, over a viral audio of him threatening to 'beat with a shoe' a local panchayat secretary. 'Kahan, England ka hai tum? Maner ke vidhayak ko nahi jaanta hai tum?… Hindustan jaanta hai aur tu keh raha hai ki Bhai Virendra kaun hai, nahin jaante hain (Where are you from, England? Don't you know the MLA of Maner?… India knows who Bhai Virendra is, and you say you don't know who Bhai Virendra is?),' the RJD MLA was purportedly heard saying to Sandeep Kumar, Secretary of the Battun Panchayat, during a call on July 26. An FIR was subsequently registered on a complaint by Kumar on Monday, including under sections of the SC/ST Act. In a Facebook post on Monday, Virendra admitted to using 'strong language' but blamed the panchayat official for being disrespectful. The fresh salvo by Tej Pratap comes nearly two months after he was expelled from the RJD by his father Lalu Prasad. In a statement on May 25, Lalu had cited 'irresponsible behaviour' and 'deviation from the family's moral values' as the reasons behind the action. 'Ignoring moral values in personal life weakens our collective struggle for social justice,' Lalu had said, adding his elder son's conduct was 'not in accordance with family values and traditions.' The decision had come a day after Tej Pratap allegedly shared a now-deleted Facebook post – a photo with a woman and a claim they had been 'in a relationship for 12 years'. Tej Pratap later denied making the post, claiming his social media account had been 'hacked'. In the immediate aftermath of the expulsion, Tej Pratap had struck an emotional tone, publicly appealing to his parents for support. 'My dear Mummy and Papa, I only need your trust and love, nothing else,' he had said. 'Papa, if not for you, neither this party nor the greedy, betraying people in politics around me would exist. I just want both of you to remain healthy and happy always.' In another post, Tej Pratap had likened himself to 'Krishna' and referred to his younger brother Tejashwi as 'Arjuna', urging him to be wary of 'conspirators' within the party. However, his tone has shifted significantly in the weeks since. 'Those who mistake my silence for weakness, do not think that I am unaware of your conspiracies… My role will not be decided by any party or family. It will be decided by the people and the Supreme Court,' he said in a social media post in June. In a symbolic move, Tej Pratap recently swapped his signature green Gandhi cap, historically associated with the RJD, for a yellow one. While a rift between Tej Pratap and his younger brother Tejashwi has been a matter of quiet speculation for years, party insiders noted that Tej Pratap, a former Bihar Cabinet minister, had grown increasingly uncomfortable with Tejashwi's political ascendancy. Tejashwi, however, has largely avoided a public confrontation with Tej Pratap though he had backed the decision to expel him. 'Personal and public life are two different things. My brother is an adult and free to make decisions about his personal life,' Tejashwi had said. Tej Pratap, the sitting Hasanpur MLA, earlier announced that he would contest the forthcoming Bihar Assembly polls from the Mahua constituency, a seat he had represented after winning his debut election in 2015. 'Yes, this time I will contest from Mahua as an Independent candidate. My opponents must already be uneasy,' he said.
