Junkyard frontman David Roach dies age 59 two weeks after tying the knot

Metro3 days ago
David Roach, lead singer of 80s rock group Junkyard, has died at age 59 after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.
His bandmates shared the devastating news on Instagram, sharing that he died 'in the loving arms of his wife', Jennifer Roach.
The pair had only tied the knot on July 19, just two weeks before his death, in a private ceremony with their closest friends.
'It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Roach,' the band wrote. 'After a courageous battle with cancer, David passed away peacefully last night at home, in the loving arms of his wife.
'He was a gifted artist, performer, songwriter, and singer—but above all, a devoted father, husband, and brother. Our thoughts are with the entire Roach family and everyone who loved him.'
The Simple Man hitmaker was diagnosed in late March with squamous cell carcinoma, a common type of skin cancer.
His wife had left her job in order to become his full-time carer, with a GoFundMe launched to help cover his medical bills as he needed around-the-clock care.
'David is a true friend to everyone he meets,' the GoFundMe read. 'He has a knack for making people feel special and appreciated, and his incredible sense of humor always brings laughter and happiness to those around him.
'His generous spirit really shines through in everything he does, including donating his amazing artwork to support others.'
The page raised over $36,000 (£27,000) with Jennifer sharing an update that described the time since his diagnosis as 'a nightmare rollercoaster'.
On July 21, she wrote that Roach had been living in a cancer centre 'for a month now' but was 'in good spirits' with hopes he could move home soon.
Following his death, bandmate Chris Gates shared: 'I loved him like a little brother. We had our ups and downs, but that never changed. My condolences to his brother and sisters, v and to ask the people who lived him or were touched by his/or songs.
'I'll miss playing music with him, but he'll always be an important part of me.'
Junkyard formed in 1987 with the core line-up consisting of Roach on vocals, Gates and Brian Baker on guitar, bassist Clay Anthony and drummer Patrick Muzingo.
They were often compared to Guns N' Roses, who were also on Geffen Records, the label which dropped Junkyard after two albums. More Trending
At the time they had their third album ready to go, which was later released as two issues: XXX and The Joker.
After being dropped in 1992, Junkyard disbanded but kept a cult following before reforming in 2000 for a world tour complete with live album from their heyday.
In 2017, they released comeback album High Water — their first studio recording in 25 years — with a final single dropped in 2021 titled Lifer.

Heartbroken partner of dad who fell to death at Oasis gig says it's 'not fair'

Lee Claydon's partner Amanda described him as "my best friend, my soulmate, and the other half" after he fell to his death at an Oasis concert in Wembley stadium The partner of a dad who fell to his death at an Oasis concert has mourned losing her "soulmate." ‌ Lee Claydon, 41, died when he fell from the upper tier balcony of Wembley Stadium during fireworks that marked the end of the song Champagne Supernova on Saturday. Massive Oasis fan Lee, from Bournemouth, was described as his partner Amanda's "soulmate." ‌ "I don't have many words right now… but it's just not fair, and it's not right that you're not here with us," she posted on Facebook. "But I will never stop loving you—my best friend, my soulmate, and the other half (the sensible and smarter half!) of our one brain. ‌ ‌ "You were the best person to be around, day or night. We went through some tough times, but they only made us stronger. "I'm so grateful for the time we had together, even though this cruel world cut it far too short. We had so much to look forward to." She continued: "I'll do my best to stay strong for all our boys—they will make you so proud. You also have the most amazing family and friends, and we'll all be there for one another. ‌ "I'm sure we'll share some memories you probably wish we'd forgotten. I love you so much, and saying I miss you doesn't even come close. Forever yours, babe. Watch over us. Learning to live without you is something I never thought I'd have to do." Liam and Noel Gallagher said in a statement over the weekend that they were "shocked and saddened" by what had happened. At their next concert at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, Liam shared a comment that appeared to hint at the previous day's tragedy. ‌ "This ones for all the people who can't be here tonight, but who are here if you know what I mean," Liam said. "And ain't they looking lovely." One fan, who sat below the man, said in a post shared to social media that she saw paramedics doing their best to save Lee's life. She added: "I was directly underneath in section 211. "At first glance I thought it was a coat falling from the above tier but then I looked and saw the bloke on the concrete. It was horrific to see." ‌ Lee's brother Aaron has since set up a GoFundMe page to support the grieving family. He said: "Our family has been turned upside down and are struggling to deal with this devastation and unexpected loss. "Lee leaves behind his Son, Dad, Partner, Brothers, Sisters, Nephews and Niece. Lee was a loving family man who was a role model to his son Harry and was loved so much by all his family." The GoFundMe page has raised £14,241 out of a target of £20,000.
