Egg prices dip around Easter, coffee and beer costing consumers more
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The price of eggs fell, just in time for Easter. Overall, however, the prices consumers paid for their groceries in April are still higher than earlier in the year.
In an effort to help you watch your wallet and hopefully save some money, NewsChannel 3 recently launched a new segment called the WREG Price Tracker.
Our team has been tracking the cost of more than 20 grocery items at Kroger, Target, and Walmart since early February.
This includes pantry and fridge staples like milk, eggs, and bread that people buy to feed their families all the time.
Which Grocery Items Were More Expensive?
Milk
Ground Beef
Eggs
When reviewing prices in early February compared to mid-April, the items above rose the most. For example, a gallon of whole milk was up by nearly 13%.
Eggs were up roughly 10%.
The WREG Price Tracker also shows eggs are the one grocery item that saw the biggest price difference across the six weeks of our tracker. The price of a dozen eggs jumped from $4.22 in early February to $5.75 a month later.
There is some good news, however. The price of eggs fell by more than a quarter just in time for Easter.
In addition, there were several other grocery items that cost less money in mid-April, compared to earlier this year.
Which Grocery Items Were Cheaper?
There were also a few grocery staples where the average price didn't change at all across any of the weeks we tracked prices. Those include: bread, jelly, bananas, and cheese.
The summer party season may be a bit pricier, as the average price for beer was the item that topped the list for the highest dollar amount increase when comparing February 3 to the week of April 14. The average price for a 12-pack of Bud Light rose to $15.20 compared to $14.15.
Your morning cup of coffee also cost more in mid-April. The average price was up more than a dollar compared to late March.
When reviewing the total cost for our groceries, the most expensive week fell in mid-March at just over $110. The price decreased in April, but is still higher than when WREG began tracking prices in early February.
Strategies to Save
Shop by the Grocery Sale
Build your grocery list strictly by what's on sale, not based on what you want.
This allows you to stock up on items when they're at their lowest price, then plan meals accordingly.
This strategy can save money at the store and time at home, since meals are already mapped out.

Black church leader calls for Dollar General digital protest, Target fast successful
The Georgia pastor who led a 40-day boycott of Target is turning his attention to another major retailer: Dollar General. Jamal-Harrison Bryant, senior pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Stonecrest, Georgia, announced a new electronic protest against the discount chain, saying it has abandoned DEI policies. Bryant says Dollar General benefits from the spending power of Black and low-income shoppers but fails to reinvest in the communities it serves. He's calling on the company to recommit to fair hiring practices, supplier diversity and community investment. The protest begins immediately. Here's what you need to know about the electronic protest against Dollar General. While it's not a boycott, Bryant urges supporters to flood Dollar General with emails, phone calls and social media posts to push for change. There is no official end date, as Bryant wants this to be a continuous effort until change is made. Bryant says that too many rural shoppers rely on the discount chain for their fresh produce and other grocer needs. According to Alabama has 975 Dollar General stores, the eighth-highest number in the country. Montgomery: 18 locations Birmingham: 7 locations Tuscaloosa: 12 locations Gadsden: 7 locations Mobile: 17 locations President Donald Trump's push to eliminate federal DEI programs has led major retailers and corporations to scale back their diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. In response, consumers and activists have staged multiple economic blackouts since February. The "Target Fast," which was supposed to last until the end of Lent, has now been extended to an indefinite blackout. Since February, other separate economic blackouts have taken place, with The People's Union targeting Walmart, Nestle, and General Mills. Data collected shows that the blackout against Target has been successful. According to a USA Today report, on Jan. 31, the day before the boycott began, shares closed at $137.91. By April 8, they had dropped nearly 36% to $88.76. Foot traffic has also dipped. According to data from which tracks in-store visits using millions of mobile devices, visits were down in the weeks following the removal of DEI. In Alabama, visits were down over 2% in April. On April 17, Target CEO Brian Cornell requested a meeting with Bryant and Rev. Al Sharpton. Cornell said Target plans to renew its $2 billion commitment to support Black-owned brands and businesses. Cornell says he intends to meet the goal by July 31, but no public announcement has been made, and says it expects to reach the goal by the end of the year.
