Shadow Labyrinth review - Pac-Man meets Metroid

The Pac-Man episode of Amazon Prime show Secret Level is the inspiration for this strange new Metroidvania and its peculiar mix of influences.
2025 has so far been a good year for weird games, with plenty of unlikely oddities, including one featuring a boy stuck in a permanent T-pose and whose best friend is a singing giraffe, and the latest from Hideo Kojima where you take orders from a talking shop mannequin and fight ghosts by flinging a boomerang soaked in your own blood at them.
It may seem a cliché but most of the strangest video games are made in Japan; those two certainly and so is this: a grim and gritty 2D Metroidvania that's also a secret Pac-Man game. As bizarre as that idea is it's worryingly reminiscent of Bomberman: Act Zero on the original Xbox, which reimagined the colourful party game as a dystopian nightmare and became infamous as one of the worst video games ever made.
Shadow Labyrinth is nowhere near that bad, but then it's not actually that gritty either. It's inspired by a 10 minute episode of Amazon Prime Video show Secret Level, which reimagined Pac-Man as a sci-fi story about a starfighter pilot crash landing on an alien world and being manipulated by a malign Pac-Man. We haven't seen it, but we hope it was better than the game tie-in.
Before we learned of the Amazon connection, we assumed the game had been inspired by the famous The Madness of Mission 6 fan art for Pac-Man, which you've probably seen on a T-shirt or two, if you've ever been to any kind of video game convention or similar event. That almost certainly would've been a lot more interesting than the vapid, cliché ridden sci-fi tale that is Shadow Labyrinth's actual backstory.
Right from the start, the plot is filled with nonsensical sounding names and jargon, but the short version is you're a nameless swordsman who's been revived by a floating yellow orb called Puck, that anyone else would recognise as Pac-Man. (The name is a reference to the fact that the original arcade game was originally meant to be called Puck Man, until someone realised how easily the first letter of the word could be defaced.)
After the brief, and very confusing, introduction you're immediately knee deep in Metroid homages, whacking weird alien bugs with your sword and practicing your 2D platform jumping. All of this is fine, although the bland and clinical-looking art style is immediately unappealing and almost makes it look like an old Flash game.

The core gameplay is absolutely bog standard Metroidvania but the degree to which it copies the look and feel of Metroid, rather than Castlevania or anything more original, is strange and off-putting, given this is supposed to be a Pac-Man game. More importantly, Shadow Labyrinth is no Metroid Dread, and not only is it not as well designed or executed (the signposting is awful) but the only thing unique about it is the shoehorned in Pac-Man references.
Like all Metroidvanias, there's a lot of exploration and backtracking in Shadow Labyrinth, as you pick up new abilities and weapons that then allow you to access areas you've previously seen, but which were inaccessible the first time round. That sense of slowly opening up the whole map, slowly peeling open its secrets, is the core appeal of the genre but this is a very uninspired implementation of the concept, with a hundred better example available elsewhere – especially from indie developers.
You've probably already guessed, but one of the most important uses for Puck is taking over the morph ball role from Metroid, as you squeeze into places you can't usually fit. The Spider Ball upgrade, that allows you to stick to walls and tracks, is the real focus though, as you move along like the arcade game, eating little white dots along the way.
There're more explicit recreations of the classic Pac-Man gameplay in a series of mini-games, which look and sound like the excellent Pac-Man Championship Edition games. They even use the same music, which only begs the question of why Bandai Namco didn't just make a new one of those, instead of wasting everyone's time with this Metroid nonsense. More Trending
Having Puck combine with your character to become a sort of mechanical demon Pac-Man dragon sounds interestingly weird in theory but even that doesn't make the game any more fun to play.
To add more salt to the wound, Puck is a very annoying character, and the whole game comes across as obnoxious and abrasive. When we say our favourite bit is the subtler references to other Namco classics, like Galaga and Xevious, it should give some indication of how much we enjoyed the majority of the game.
Pac-Man has been around for 45 years and has aged better than most other golden age coin-ops, with the Pac-Man Championship Edition series keeping the core gameplay fresh and exciting even after all these decades. There's nothing fresh or exciting about Shadow Labyrinth though, the memory of which will linger for far less time.
In Short: Mixing Pac-Man with Metroid seems like an enjoyably strange idea at first, until you realise just how bland and unimaginative the end result is.
Pros: You have to get a long wrong to make a Metroidvania completely uninteresting and the sword-based combat is mildly engaging. The Pac-Man Championship Edition mini-games are fun.
Cons: Once you dismiss the Pac-Man gimmicks the game has no notable ideas of its own and pales compared to better examples of the genre. Confusing and unengaging story, with ugly visuals.

We Are The Champions Episode 16 of Good Boy begins this finale with a reminder from Yeon-ha of just how powerful and unpredictable Ju-yeong actually is. In fact, he has enough explosive power to obliterate Insung City. This catches us up to the moments we left off from yesterday, where the truck completely explodes and the team scramble to safety. They get away just in time, as the whole thing explodes into an inferno. However, this isn't the end of it, as 3 other trucks around Insung City detonate. Ju-yeong really has nothing to lose here and that makes him incredibly dangerous. Meanwhile, Man-sik has seen his whole life flash before his eyes after the explosion. He's just thankful he can go back to see Jeong-a but Dong-ju is not happy. He shows up to see the Commissioner and demands he take some accountability for his actions. Pan-yeol eventually concedes and admits that dozens of high-ranking officials in Insung have been in bed with Ju-yeong all these years and it's not going to be easy to unravel those ties. What does Yeon-ha reveal? However, there are more pressing issues to attend to right now. There's another undetonated truck out there and they need to track down where it is. The only person who may know is Yeon-ha so once again we get a touch of deja ju as the gang question Yeon-ha about what she may know. Yeon-ha unravels a surprising connection to Kim Yu-na, one of the girls from the Custom Office. She actually has a crush on Ju-yeong so if they can track her down, they may be able to get Ju-yeong too. The group do find Yu-na, who admits that she was encouraged to leave the country with Ju-yeong. They were due to meet at the Victory Hotel, so the group use this as a way of luring Ju-yeong in. They're not the only ones after him though, as the Yakuza are sniffing around too. After Ju-yeong tried (and failed) to strike a deal with them, the gangs are desperate for blood and that means anyone aligned with Ju-yeong is on the backfoot now. Ju-yeong is also holding a shareholder meeting at the Victory Hotel (which he owns and they're currently at). What is Ju-yeong planning at the hotel? When Ju-yeong doesn't show, Dong-ju senses something fishy going on and tells the group that they need to be vigilant here. Yu-na may not be completely truthful and unfortunately, we get confirmation of this just after. With sodium cyanide powder on the floor of the hotel and Yu-na suddenly scarping off in a taxi, it seems Ju-yeong intends to blow up the hotel. If this happens, it'll occur during the shareholder meeting, killing all the officials outright. The group realize they need to evacuate the building and try to get them out. Unfortunately the shareholders don't believe them, until the lights all go out and gas sprays down from the ceiling. The group do eventually manage to get out, thanks to Dong-ju throwing himself through a window and the group taking the emergency stairwell. However, they're not alone here, as Han-na manages to call in reinforcements, making Pan-yeol seem like a hero by saving all of Insung. What happens with Ju-yeong? He's also going to do the right thing and stand up to crime and corruption, declaring war on the city and, by extension, Ju-yeong himself. However, it's not the police who find Ju-yeong first, it's the Yakuza. The Yakuza goons catch up to Ju-yeong down on the dock as he looks set to flee on a foreign boat. They beat him down until Jong-hyeon and Dong-ju arrive in the same warehouse and decide to take him in to custody. After a fight with the Yakuza (and also Mr Baek and the scrabble of goons left outside) Baek is taken in for questioning while Dong-ju continues to get outsmarted by Ju-yeong, who jumps overboard and tries to drown himself. Underwater though, Dong-ju handcuffs him and brings the guy to shore. I mean somehow they do this far away from the boat they just jumped off of but whatever. The most important thing is that Ju-yeong is captured. How does Good Boy end? In the aftermath of all this, Dong-ju does rehab to help his condition while Han-na is supportive of him the whole time. Dong-ju shows up to see Ju-yeong and rubs it in that he's going back to work and has also had a promotion too. Ju-yeong points out that nothing will change now that he's behind bars and everything is still just as corrupt as it was before. Dong-ju shrugs off his pessimism but that night it comes back to bite Ju-yeong, as a prison guard arrives and chokes him out. As for the others, the team are celebrated for their achievements and lean into their accomplishments. Everybody seems to be doing ok, while Man-sik also finds out that his wife is pregnant too, hooray! The Episode Review So Good Boy bows out with a finale that really hammers home that this show has coasted by on the talents of its cast and choreography, rather than the writing. These episodes have been a complete mixed bag and now that the dust has settled, it's worth commenting on some of the liberties the writers have taken with the entire plot and pretty much all the characters here. Dong-ju's persona began as a gung-ho, devil-may-care guy who throws himself into every situation without thinking. By the end, he's the exact same character. You'd think that something like CTE and Punch-drunk syndrome, (temporary blindness and blistering headaches notwithstanding) may have been enough to soften him out a bit but nope, he's the same guy he was at the start of the show. In fact, the annoying thing about this arc is he's basically given some pills from the doctor and a bit of rehab and now he's right as rain. He's even got a promotion too! While I wouldn't call for his death, a little more humility around his condition would have benefited him tremendously. We also don't have much follow-through with Jae-hong and his family life, juggling all these jobs for money and then… not needing to? Despite having one of the more interesting characters we could have exploded, Good Boy side-lines the big man for much of the show. Han-na is just here as a sharpshooter and her character hasn't really developed either across these 16 episodes, despite being the main female lead. However, this final episode does wrap up all the loose ends and explains a lot of the slipperiness that Ju-yeong has had all drama long. eeing his downfall has certainly been satisfying, even if it would have been good to see a bit more here. Overall, Good Boy has been a complete waste of great talent. It's a show that's frustratingly missed the mark on more than one occasion, and no amount of excellent action or acting can paper over that fact. The biggest problem with the Nintendo Switch 2 is that it's too big

A reader is happy with the games on the Switch 2 but wishes that it, and other modern portables like the PlayStation Portal, were a bit smaller. The first console I ever got was the Game Boy Color, in about 1998. Even then it was obvious to me that it was old tech, but the games were great, so it didn't matter and there started a life of loving video games. I like to think I'm not too biased in terms of companies and formats, but I have to admit I have a soft spot for Nintendo and portables so, as you can imagine, I've loved the Switch and immediately got a Switch 2. I've not played a lot of Donkey Kong Bananza so far, but I like what I have played and Mario Kart World is great. I certainly wouldn't have complained if there were more game announcements at this point, but I think, knowing games take longer nowadays, it's a good launch. I also don't regret getting the Switch 2 but I do have a big problem with it, and it's something I knew was going to be an issue before I got it: it's too big. The Switch 2 has a 7.9 inch screen and is 27.2 cm × 11.6 cm. That is, in short, massive. The smallest portable I own is the Game Boy Micro, which is 10.1 cm by 5 cm. That's one extreme to another but even the clunky big original DS was only 14.9 cm x 8.5 cm when it was closed. These are actual portable consoles that you can put in your pocket and carry around with you. There is no way that I can comfortably put a Switch 2 in the pocket of any coat or trousers I own. I tried to talk my girlfriend into putting it in her handbag, but it didn't fit. Especially as you have to put it in its own carry case first or risk getting it bashed up and scratched. I get the Switch 2 is very powerful and the screen is huge and all that. It's definitely a decision, not a mistake, but I don't like it. I especially don't like it because it's part of the modern trend where all portables are not actually portable. I've got a PlayStation 5 and a PlayStation Portal, and while the Portal is useful its size is really awkward, even though you only use it in the house. I don't own a PC portable or an Xbox but that Xbox Ally looks massive and clunky too. I think we've really lost sight of the benefits of what a portable console should be. The ability to, you know… port it around to you. If I want to take the Switch 2 with me anywhere I basically have to take a bag with me, whether I was going to or not. It's bigger than the Switch 1 but not by that much, so this isn't a new problem, but I would like to see a proper alternative. The Switch Lite was smaller but it was still pretty massive compared to any previous handheld console. And now we hear rumours that the PlayStation 6 and next gen Xbox are going to be portables, or have portable versions? I'm going to take a wild guess and imagine they're going to be the size of a house too. Because if there's one thing the PlayStation 5 has taught me, it's that Sony does not value the idea of making consoles a convenient size. I'm not angry and I'm not going to start a petition, but I do think it's a shame and I wish things like the Switch Lite offered a real alternative in terms of the size, because it really makes a different to how, and how often, you use them. Since I don't expect any change with the inevitable Switch 2 Lite, what I will ask for instead is some kind of mini-console portable from Nintendo. Something that can play games from all their pre-Switch portable consoles, that has the same design as the 3DS but is as small as they can make it. More Trending I think a lot of people would be interested in that, not just weirdos like me, and it might even help people to appreciate the idea of a handheld that can actually fit in the palm of your hand.
