Etisalat CEO reaffirms investment commitment to Pakistan in meeting with deputy PM
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar hosted Etisalat Group CEO Hatem Dowidar and a high-level delegation that included top Pakistani officials from the IT, commerce, and privatization ministries, as well as the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC).
Dar highlighted Pakistan's 'growing digital economy and the government's commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment. He invited Etisalat Group to expand its investments in the country's ICT and telecom sectors,' a statement from the foreign ministry said.
Dowidar 'appreciated the Government of Pakistan's consistent support' and expressed interest in contributing to the country's digital connectivity and growth goals, the statement added.
Etisalat currently owns a 26 percent stake in Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), a former state-owned enterprise that was partially privatized in 2006. However, the transaction has been mired in disputes, with Etisalat withholding $800 million of the sale price over issues related to the transfer of properties promised as part of the deal.
Pakistan's repeated efforts to fully privatize PTCL have faced delays due to the unresolved asset transfer issue and lack of consensus on valuation. The government has said resolving the matter with Etisalat is crucial for moving forward with broader privatization goals, especially under commitments tied to IMF-supported economic reforms.

Marcos flies to US to secure deal ahead of tariff policy
MANILA: Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. left for Washington, D.C. on Sunday for meetings with Donald Trump and his administration ahead of the implementation of US tariffs on Southeast Asian countries. Trump raised reciprocal tariffs on Philippine exports to 20 percent this month, up from the 17 percent initially threatened in April. Some other Southeast Asian nations, including Indonesia and Vietnam, were hit with over 30 percent rates, forcing them to step up negotiations. According to Trump's announcements, both countries agreed to zero tariffs on American exports, while accepting rates of 19 percent and 20 percent on their own goods, respectively. 'During this visit, we will reaffirm our commitment to fostering our long-standing alliances as an instrument of peace and a catalyst of development in the Asia-Pacific region and around the world.' Besides Trump, the Philippine president will also have a meeting with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday. Philippine businesses were hoping that the fact that Marcos was the only ASEAN leader to negotiate the tariffs in person could offer some concessions for Washington's key security partner in Asia, which, under a decades-long alliance, allows the US to build and operate facilities on Philippine military bases. 'For Manila, this development, along with President Marcos being the first ASEAN leader invited for a state visit under the current Trump administration, enhanced the country's diplomatic profile and affirms its strategic relevance in the Indo-Pacific region,' Nunnatus Cortez, president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Makati, told Arab News. 'The Philippine delegation would probably push for a bilateral agreement with the US, particularly on food security and semiconductors … We could only negotiate for a lower tariff than 20 percent. Difficult to get a zero percent tariff, as the latest news showed revenues from tariffs added close to $90 billion to the US in the first six months.'

Opposition in Pakistan's KP cries foul as assembly session adjourns without oath-taking
ISLAMABAD: Opposition lawmakers in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province protested on Sunday after the assembly's session was adjourned without the oath-taking of members on reserved parliamentary seats for women and minorities. The matter of reserved seats has become a controversial one in Pakistan. The country's top court ruled in June that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan was not entitled to reserved seats in the national and provincial legislatures. The dispute about the reserved seats stems from the February 8 general elections, where PTI candidates contested as independents after the party lost its electoral symbol for not holding valid intra-party elections, as required under the Elections Act. Despite winning the most general seats in the national polls, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) ruled that PTI was ineligible for reserved seats for women and minorities in parliament, which are allocated based on proportional representation from among the seats won by political parties. The reserved seats were then allocated to other political parties, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party and its coalition partners. At least 21 women and four minority members were supposed to take oath as members of the KP Assembly on reserved seats today, Sunday, as per local media reports. 'New members poised to take their oath on reserved seats in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly were unable to do so today due to a lack of quorum, forcing the session to be adjourned,' state television channel PTV News reported. The reserved seats were crucial for the PTI, which is the largest party in KP and has formed its government in the northwestern province consecutively since 2013. According to state media, PTI lawmaker Sher Ali Afridi highlighted the lack of quorum early in the session. As attendance remained insufficient, Speaker Babar Saleem Swati adjourned proceedings until 2:00 p.m. on July 24. 'Addressing media in Peshawar, Leader of the Opposition Dr. Ibaadullah sharply criticized the provincial government, stating it was 'playing with the assembly,'' PTV News reported. 'He lamented that the province has been deprived of its due representation in the Senate for more than a year. ' KP GOVERNOR TO ADMINISTER OATH Following the delay, KP opposition lawmakers filed a petition at the Peshawar High Court, urging the chief justice to nominate an authority to administer the oath to lawmakers on reserved seats. The PHC subsequently issued an order seen by Arab News, in which it nominated KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi to administer the oath to the lawmakers 'at the earliest.' Oman's telecom sector powers ahead with surge in IoT, mobile connections
JEDDAH: Oman's telecom sector grew 15.2 percent by May, with mobile subscriptions reaching 8.13 million and Internet of Things connections rising to 1.55 million amid digital expansion and smart tech adoption, official data showed. IoT subscriptions surged by 118.7 percent, highlighting the growing demand for smart connectivity across sectors such as logistics, utilities, and manufacturing, the National Center for Statistics and Information said. Oman's rapidly expanding digital infrastructure is central to Vision 2040, which focuses on innovation, economic diversification, and improved public services. Meanwhile, growth in fiber optic and fixed 5G subscriptions highlights the shift toward advanced, high-speed connectivity. According to Mordor Intelligence, a global market research and consulting firm, this momentum is backed by substantial public investment. In 2022, the government announced a $441.5 million digital transformation initiative to modernize the public sector and deliver seamless smart services to citizens and businesses. 'This commitment is further reinforced by the national Digital Economy Program's ambitious targets under Oman Vision 2040, which projects the digital economy's contribution to gross domestic product to rise from 3 percent in 2025 to 5 percent in 2030, ultimately reaching 10 percent by 2040,' Mordor said in a report on the Gulf state's information and communication technology market. The research firm added that the government's digitalization drive includes a goal of digitizing approximately 80 percent of services by 2025, laying a robust foundation for long-term technological progress across sectors. Further data from NCSI, also published by the Oman News Agency, showed postpaid mobile subscriptions climbed by 5.6 percent to over 1.23 million by the end of May, compared to the same period last year. Prepaid mobile subscriptions also rose, up 3.1 percent to more than 5.33 million. Mobile broadband Internet subscriptions reached 5.41 million, while fixed broadband subscriptions increased by 2.6 percent year-on-year to 588,015. Within the fixed Internet segment, fiber optic services grew by 11.4 percent to 339,279 subscriptions. Fixed 5G connections rose by 2.1 percent to 215,850. However, legacy technologies are on the decline, with fixed 4G subscriptions falling by 38.1 percent to 19,654, digital user lines dropping by 50.8 percent to 11,806, and satellite Internet accounts shrinking by 2.1 percent to 653. Other Internet services, such as powerline, Ethernet, and leased lines, also contracted by 12 percent, totaling only 773 subscriptions by the end of the fifth month. The sultanate's digital transformation efforts are further underscored by the Government Digital Transformation Program, known as Tahawul, which reached 73 percent overall performance by November, up from 53 percent the previous year. The government has streamlined and digitalized thousands of public services, with four key entities, including the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, achieving advanced digital excellence. The progress aligns with Oman Vision 2040's priorities and is supported by major digital infrastructure projects, such as the upcoming unified e-government portal and the National Digital Integration Platform, which has processed over 1.4 billion data transactions. The surge in digital government transactions, reaching nearly 27 million in 2024, reflects the growing public adoption of smart services. By 2025, 80 percent of essential government services are expected to be fully online.
