Bread may be to blame for your depression and fatigue — and cause schizophrenia

New York Post24-07-2025
There's bad news for carboholics.
A growing body of research suggests that eating bread, pasta and other grain products may trigger or worsen a wide range of psychological symptoms, including depression, anxiety and even schizophrenia.
Experts warn that some people could be especially at risk, with these mealtime staples quietly sabotaging their brains every time they take a bite.
4 A protein widely found in bread, pasta and other grains could be why some people are depressed or anxious.

The key culprit, researchers theorize, is gluten.
This naturally occurring protein — found in wheat, barley and rye — acts as a binder that gives baked goods and other foods their structure and chew.
For most, it's harmless. But in others, gluten sensitivity can trigger a range of unpleasant symptoms, including bloating, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, headaches and joint pain, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

In more serious cases, it can develop into celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder in which the body mistakes gluten for a harmful invader, like a virus. The resulting immune response triggers inflammation and damage in the small intestine — but the effects may go far beyond digestion.
'Inflammation that starts in the gut doesn't stay in the gut. [It] can have a damaging effect on the brain,' Dr. Emeran Mayer, a gastroenterologist and neuroscientist, told Psychology Today.
'When immune cells are activated, the vagus nerve system sends a signal to the brain that can trigger fatigue and depression-like behavior,' he noted.

In children, that can look like irritability or symptoms of ADHD. In adults, it may show up as brain fog, mood disorders or more serious psychiatric conditions.
Take depression, for example. While around 8% of the general population is diagnosed with major depressive disorder at some point in their lives, studies suggest that people with celiac disease are hit much harder — with some research putting the rate as high as 30%.
Celiac disease has also been linked to a greater risk of anxiety, panic disorder and even schizophrenia. In fact, one study found that people with celiac are three times more likely to develop schizophrenia than those without the condition.

Beyond inflammation, research suggests that damage to the gut lining caused by gluten sensitivity may also contribute to these mental health issues.
That damage can interfere with the absorption of nutrients essential for brain function, including B vitamins, iron, vitamin D, magnesium and zinc. Deficiencies in any of these can lead to a variety of psychological symptoms.
4 Some studies suggest a potential link between celiac disease and an increased risk of developing schizophrenia.

Scientists have also found that people with schizophrenia often test positive for high levels of antibodies linked to gluten sensitivity, hinting at a possible connection between the two.
These antibodies can cross the placenta, and studies show that mothers with elevated levels may increase the risk of psychosis in their children.
'We don't know everything. But it's another step closer connecting the dots about these illnesses,' Deanna L. Kelly, a psychiatry professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine who has spent the past 15 years leading clinical trials in schizophrenia and severe mental illness, told The Telegraph.
Can a gluten-free diet help?
The research is mixed.

Some studies have found that a gluten-free diet can ease anxiety, depression and neurological complications in people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.

In one trial, participants with celiac reported lower anxiety levels after following a gluten-free diet for a year.

But others show no significant improvement — and in some cases, anxiety levels remained elevated even after cutting gluten.
Some experts think part of the problem may come from the psychological stress of managing a chronic health condition.
'Being on a gluten-free diet can also lead to some of these psychiatric or mental health issues, because you have to be somewhat hyper-vigilant,' Debra Silberg, a gastroenterologist and chief science officer at Beyond Celiac, told Discover Magazine.
'There's also a fear of going out and becoming exposed to gluten,' she added.

Across the country, about 1 in every 133 people — roughly 1% of the US population — is estimated to have celiac disease, according to Beyond Celiac. That adds up to around 2 million Americans.
Researchers believe the number of people affected by gluten intolerance is much higher. Studies estimate that about 6% of the US population — or roughly 20 million people — may be sensitive to gluten.

How Do You Spot ADHD In Kids? Expert Shares The Subtle Signs To Look For At Home And School

A leading expert in ADHD has opened up about the signs of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children which might warrant further exploration. Professor Stephen Scott, a consultant child psychiatrist, spoke to Dr Karan Rajan for the Channel 4 show, Do You Have ADHD?, about the subtle signs adults might notice in kids at home and school. 'First of all, if you're just watching them in the school playground, are they running around more than other kids?' said Prof Scott. 'At the table, compared with their brother, do they have to keep getting up and down? 'Are they always forgetting things much more? Are they leaving gym kit at school, and that sort of thing – this disorganisation.' If any of this rings true, the second step is to get an idea of what your child is like at school when you're not there, said the expert. The best way to do this is by speaking to their teacher. 'If they're fine in class, it's something else – it's not ADHD,' Prof Scott continued. 'But if the teacher says 'yes they're very disruptive, they're always chatting and talking to the other people ... they seem to be daydreaming,' then you're more likely to be onto something.' How does ADHD feel for children In the show, which explored the complexities of life with ADHD, and the challenges faced by children and adults awaiting a formal diagnosis, children described how ADHD impacted them. One boy, James, said: 'I think I just feel maybe a little more hyper – and also I fidget a lot. I mean, a lot a lot.' Meanwhile Isla said: 'Sometimes I have too many things in my head that I just lose everything, so I can't think of what I'm saying.' Prof Scott pointed out that because boys with ADHD are 'often hyperactive and impulsive', it means they tend to get referred to services, 'whereas the girls can just be inattentive and it can be missed until adolescence'. With inattentive ADHD, children might struggle to pay attention, forget things easily, or lose important items, according to the Child Mind Institute. This can become more obvious when kids reach secondary school, as the workload increases and they're expected to work independently, which they might really struggle to do. When symptoms lead to significant suffering and cause problems at home, at school or work, diagnosis is important – especially as ADHD can lead to poor self-esteem and social function in kids when not appropriately treated. What to do if your child shows signs of ADHD If you suspect your child has ADHD and it's impacting their day-to-day life, speak to your GP, who can help rule out other conditions, such as autism and anxiety. There isn't a specific test to diagnose ADHD – it is typically made by a paediatrician, psychiatrist or clinical psychologist via an assessment, for which waiting times can vary. Great Ormond Street Hospital's states that an ADHD diagnosis 'can be considered but will not usually be confirmed until a child is around six years old and starts school'. The NHS recommends the following lifestyle changes to help a child manage their ADHD symptoms: Make time for physical activities they enjoy. Encourage them to get regular sleep. Help them to have a healthy, balanced diet and regular mealtimes. (Schedule regular meals or snacks no more than three hours apart.) If some foods and drinks seem to affect their symptoms, keep a food and drink diary to see what these are. Related... Jim Kelly posts heartbreaking tribute for son Hunter 20 years after his death

Jim Kelly is remembering his son Hunter on the 20-year anniversary of his death. The 65-year-old Hall of Fame quarterback, who spent his entire 11-year NFL career with the Buffalo Bills, per ESPN, shares two daughters — Erin and Camryn — with his wife of 29 years, Jill Kelly. The couple also share a son Hunter, who died of Krabbe disease on Aug. 5, 2005. He was 8 years old. 'Words are simply not enough to express how my heart is today,' Jim Kelly wrote in a caption on Instagram alongside photos of him and Hunter. 'So many things going in and out of my mind especially this last month. I can only reach out and ask people for prayers,' he added in the Aug. 5 post. In the final slide, Jim and Jill Kelly are seen wearing black T-shirts with 'Hunter' written on them. 'Hunter, I can't wait for the day that I get to join you in heaven. But I have a lot of loving to do right here at Home. I MISS YOU HB,' he continued. Jill Kelly also took to Instagram to post a tribute for Hunter. 'How can it be 20 years without Hunter? How can it feel like just yesterday and a million days ago? How did we walk through that heartbreak and survive?' she wrote in the caption. 'Not a single day has passed without thinking of Hunter, missing him and wishing he was here,' she added. Hunter, who shares a birthday with his father, was born on Feb. 14, 1997. At the time, he was diagnosed with Krabbe leukodystrophy. According to the Cleveland Clinic, Krabbe disease 'is a rare, inherited condition that affects the myelin that covers and protects your nerve cells, causing neurological issues.' It occurs in about 1 per 250,000 live births in the United States, per the Cleveland Clinic. There's no known cure for the disease. Despite being given no more than three years to live at the time of his diagnosis, per ESPN, Hunter went on to live well beyond his 8th birthday. He also inspired his parents to establish the Hunter's Hope Foundation in 1997, per its official website. The nonprofit has raised millions of dollars to 'address the acute need for information and research with respect to Krabbe Disease and related Leukodystrophies,' per its 2024 annual report. It also strives to 'support and encourage those afflicted and their families as they struggle to endure, adjust, and cope with the demands of these fatal illnesses,' per the report. Jim Kelly's tribute comes one month after another tragedy in the family. In July, Jim Kelly's daughter, Erin, welcomed her first baby with her husband, Parker Bean. Later that week, Jim Kelly took to Instagram with a heartbreaking update. 'Well, we need your prayers again,' he wrote in a July 13 Instagram post. 'We never imagined we would be here in this place of heartbreak and suffering again. Please pray for our daughter Erin, her husband Parker, and their precious newborn baby boy,' he added. Jim Kelly didn't elaborate on the details but clarified that his grandson was born with 'unexpected medical complications.' The family has kept their fans in the loop ever since, with Jim Kelly's latest update coming on Aug. 3. 'Watching Erin and Parker walk through this is heartbreaking,' he wrote in the caption. 'It puts everything in perspective and reminds us again and again that we are not in control.' 'The doctors have decided to pause any changes until August 11th, to give Little Bean time to grow, rest, and get stronger,' he added. 'They're holding off on taking him off his medication until then.'
