Harvard Physicist Claims New Interstellar Comet is Alien Probe

An unexpected visitor to our solar system spotted earlier this month might be a piece of alien technology—that is, according to one professor from Harvard University.
3I/ATLAS—which is only the third known interstellar object ever recorded—was detected on July 1 by NASA's ATLAS telescope in Chile.
Despite being officially classified as a comet, theoretical physicist professor Avi Loebof Harvard University, has argued that the object could have been sent by an alien civilization.
Loeb explained that the object's trajectory, size and behavior suggest it could be something far more advanced than a natural occurrence—and could instead be some form of alien craft or probe.
"The retrograde orbital plane of 3I/ATLAS around the Sun lies within 5 degrees of that of Earth... The likelihood for that coincidence out of all random orientations is 0.2 percent," Loeb told Newsweek.
Despite this, other scientists are skeptical of Loeb's claims. Richard Moissl, Head of Planetary Defence at the European Space Agency told Newsweek: "There have been no signs pointing to non-natural origins of 3I/ATLAS in the available observations."

These are not the only anomalies that set 3I/ATLAS apart from typical comets. In addition to its retrograde orbit, Loeb said that the brightness of 3I/ATLAS implies an object that is around 20 kilometers in diameter which he explained is "too large for an interstellar asteroid."
"It might have targeted the inner Solar System as expected from alien technology," he added.
3I/ATLAS is expected to pass unusually close to Venus, Mars and Jupiter this fall, an alignment Loeb calculates as having a probability of just 0.005 percent if the arrival time were random.
The comet is expected to reach its closest point to the Sun on October 29, when it will be hidden from Earth's view, a detail Loeb finds suspicious. "This could be intentional to avoid detailed observations from Earth-based telescopes," he said.
The object also lacks typical cometary features. "No spectral features of cometary gas are found in spectroscopic observations of 3I/ATLAS," Loeb said.

Unlike Loeb, Moissl believes that the most likely explanation for the object is a natural origin, likely originating from an orbit around a star somewhere in our galaxy.
"All observations are in agreement with basic assumptions about a space-weathered natural object with, so far, weak cometary activity," he said.
This is not the first time that Loeb has shared an extraterrestrial theory for a space object. In 2022 he theorized that mysterious cosmic object known as 'Oumuamua may be technology from an alien civilization.
While emphasizing that this remains a hypothesis, Loeb argues the possibility deserves serious attention.
"The consequences, should the hypothesis turn out to be correct, could potentially be dire for humanity," he said. "We better be ready for both options and check whether all interstellar objects are rocks."
In the meantime, work is being done to collect as much data as possible about space objects like 3I/ATLAS.
"Astronomers around the world are collecting as much data as possible on the orbit and physical properties of the object and how these change in the course of it passing through our solar system," Moissl explained.
"Collecting this data will provide us with clues as to what the object is made of and, by proxy, provide some exciting insights into how faraway planetary systems might look."

A Look Inside Rocket Lab's Q1 Earnings Report Rocket Lab kicked off fiscal 2025 with a strong start, as its first-quarter earnings report on May 8 highlighted steady revenue growth and continued momentum across both its launch and space systems segments. The company delivered a record $122.6 million in revenue, representing an impressive 32% increase over the same period last year. Operationally, Rocket Lab delivered a flawless performance, achieving 100% mission success for Electron during the quarter. It completed five launches supporting Earth-imaging, monitoring, intelligence, and global wildfire detection missions. Notably, the company successfully executed three of those launches in just 13 days, a rapid pace that highlights its growing efficiency and reliability. Meanwhile, Rocket Lab continues to advance its next-generation Neutron rocket, with Stage 2 qualification now complete and Stage 1 qualification in progress. A key highlight from the quarter was Neutron's selection for the U.S. Space Force's National Security Space Launch (NSSL) Phase 3 Lane 1 program, a major $5.6 billion initiative aimed at supporting critical national security missions. In fact, total operating expenses increased 40% annually in the first quarter, primarily driven by a rise in investment in Neutron development. GAAP R&D spending rose to $55.1 million, reflecting Rocket Lab's accelerated focus on its next-gen launch vehicle. On the bottom-line side, the company reported a net loss of $0.12 per share, worsening from a $0.09 loss per share in the same period last year. Looking ahead to Q2, which is scheduled to be reported next month, Rocket Lab expects revenue to land between $130 million and $140 million, with non-GAAP gross margins forecast in the range of 34% to 36%. Additionally, operating expenses for the quarter are projected to range between $96 million and $98 million, as the company continues to scale its infrastructure and development efforts. What Do Analysts Expect for Rocket Lab Stock? On July 14, Rocket Lab shares popped nearly 11% after Citi analyst Jason Gursky boosted his price target from $33 to $50 while keeping a 'Buy' rating on the stock. The upgrade came as Gursky shifted his valuation to reflect the company's longer-term outlook, projecting revenue to reach around $2.6 billion by 2029. Gursky pointed to several key areas that could drive momentum, including ongoing progress with the Neutron rocket, potential updates from the U.S. Department of Defense, and the company's ability to land more launch contracts. Looking ahead, the analyst expects Rocket Lab's growth to be driven by approximately 20 Neutron launches per year and a steady increase in satellite construction successes. The forecast also includes around $50 million in annual revenue from the Geost acquisition, which is expected to close in the second half of 2025. Overall, RKLB stock continues to earn Wall Street's trust, holding a steady 'Moderate Buy' consensus rating as analysts remain optimistic about its growth in the expanding space economy. Of the 15 analysts offering recommendations, eight advocate a 'Strong Buy' rating, one gives a 'Moderate Buy,' and six suggest a 'Hold.' The stock is already trading at a premium to its average price target of $34.42. However, Citi's Street-high target of $50 suggests that RKLB can still rally as much as 14% from here. Nasa and India have teamed up to launch an Earth-mapping satellite capable of tracking the slightest shifts in land and ice. The 1.3 billion dollar (£980 million) mission will help forecasters and first responders stay one step ahead of floods, landslides, volcanic eruptions and other disasters, according to scientists. Rocketing to orbit from India, the satellite will survey virtually all of Earth's terrain multiple times. Its two radars — one from the US and the other from India — will operate day and night, peering through clouds, rain and foliage to collect troves of data in extraordinary detail. Microwave signals beamed down to Earth from the dual radars will bounce back up to the satellite's super-sized antenna reflector perched at the end of a boom like a beach umbrella. Scientists will compare the incoming and outgoing signals as the spacecraft passes over the same locations twice every 12 days, teasing out changes as small as a fraction of an inch. It's 'a first-of-its-kind, jewel radar satellite that will change the way we study our home planet and better predict a natural disaster before it strikes,' Nasa's science mission chief Nicky Fox said ahead of liftoff. Ms Fox led a small Nasa delegation to India for the launch. It will take a week to extend the satellite's 30ft boom and open the 39ft-in-diameter drum-shaped reflector made of gold-plated wire mesh. Science operations should begin by the end of October. Among the satellite's most pressing measurements: melting glaciers and polar ice sheets; shifting groundwater supplies; motion and stress of land surfaces prompting landslides and earthquakes; and forest and wetland disruptions boosting carbon dioxide and methane emissions. Nasa is contributing 1.2 billion dollars (£900 million) to the three-year mission – it supplied the low-frequency radar and reflector. The Indian Space Research Organisation's 91 million dollar (£68 million) share includes the higher-frequency radar and main satellite structure, as well as the launch from a barrier island in the Bay of Bengal. It is the biggest space collaboration between the two countries. The satellite called Nisar — short for Nasa-Isro Synthetic Aperture Radar — will operate from a near-polar-circling orbit 464 miles high. It will join dozens of Earth observation missions already in operation by the US and India.
