Sled dogs: Sussex man defends world title for third time
A man from Sussex is set to defend his world sled dog racing title for the third consecutive time. Matt Hodgson, from Heathfield, is taking part in the four-dog class in Östersund in Sweden on Friday aiming for his seventh world title. He became the UK's first ever on-snow world champion in 2023. Mr Hodgson said sled dog racing "brings people together from all over the world who share a passion for these amazing dogs".
Mr Hodgson is one of only 10 competitors from the UK taking part in the event. He told BBC Radio Sussex: "It's going to be tough. "There are some very strong Norwegian competitors who get a lot more snow to practice on than I do in Sussex."He added: "I've always had a love of arctic dogs, ever since as a boy reading books such as The Call of the Wild by Jack London."Just over 20 years ago I attended my first sled dog race in the New Forest and shortly afterwards acquired my first sled dog, an Alaskan Malamute I called Ranger."
More than 150 competitors from 22 countries plus 1,000 sled dogs are set to compete over three days. Mr Hodgson said: "Having dogs as your team mates creates a super special bond."You have to not only be their trainer, you're their psychologist, nutritionist, team mate and manager. As a purely amateur sport, there is no prize money involved.

Former Celtic loan star Daniel Arzani breaks silence amid Hearts transfer interest and reveals World Cup hopes
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) DANIEL Arzani has spoken out about his future as the out-of-contract winger has been talked up for a Hearts move. Reports have linked the former Celtic kid to Derek McInnes' Tynecastle side as his time at Melbourne Victory looks to be coming to an end. 3 Australian international Daniel Arzani has been linked with Hearts Credit: Getty 3 He's out of contract at Melbourne Victory Credit: Getty 3 He tore his ACL in the first game of his ill-fated Celtic spell Credit: Kenny Ramsay - The Sun Glasgow And the Australian international has discussed how the upcoming 2026 World Cup is a massive factor in any decision he might make. The Socceroos play Saudi Arabia on Tuesday with a win or draw enough to guarantee a place at next year's tournament. With that in mind, the 26-year-old is already casting his eye towards making his mark on the world stage with a place in the squad. He said: 'I think anyone now, any of the boys looking to move or off contract, that thought process will be in their head. 'It's a big deal, a World Cup, it's massive - everyone wants to be a part of it. 'It is going to be really competitive and we have a lot of talent coming out of Australia as well. 'I think it is definitely important that if I go somewhere that I'll be playing week in, week out. 'I'm not sure what I am doing yet, what direction I am heading in but that's definitely part of the equation." Arzani's previous spell in Scotland was ruined by injury not long after he made the move to Parkhead. In August 2018 he moved to Manchester City from Melbourne City, who share an ownership group. Kieran Tierney appears to lose £1,000 in video posted by Celtic's Daniel Arzani He was quickly loaned to Brendan Rodgers' side on a two-year deal, but tore his ACL on his debut against Dundee and went on to make just one more appearance in green and white. Thereafter he was loaned to Utrecht, AGF, and Lommel for short and quiet spells before permanently returning to his homeland where he has enjoyed better fortunes. The Jambos already have a number of new players joining up this summer. Christian Borchgrevink, captain of Norwegian side Valerenga, put pen to paper as early as April. Former Morton player Oisin McIntee will be making the switch from Walsall. And Greek winger Alexandros Kyziridis will be arriving off the back of a 13-goal season in Slovakia.
