Sexual assault by friend left me feeling 'betrayed'

Yahoo01-06-2025
A woman who was sexually assaulted by a friend after a night out has described the devastating impact the attack had on her life.
Bryony Piggin, 20, waived her right to anonymity and told the BBC she felt "betrayed" by her former best friend.
She spoke out after Stefan Nikolic, 20, of Coast Road, Bacton, in Norfolk, was found guilty of assault by penetration.
On Friday, Recorder Simon Levene sentenced him to two years in prison, suspended for 24 months, and told him he had "misread" the situation.
Describing her friendship with Nikolic before the attack, Ms Piggin said: "We were inseparable."
The pair had been on a night out with friends in Norwich when the assault happened in April 2023.
The court heard that she had agreed Nikolic could stay at her home in the city, but when she woke up, he was assaulting her.
"It was incomprehensible that my best friend would do something like that to me," she said.
Ms Piggin, who is now unable to work due to her mental health, said the assault left her with a sense of "confusion, betrayal and sadness".
She said she could not believe her former friend "abused" the trust she gave him.
The attack on 29 April 2023, has left Ms Piggin with anxiety issues and led to her dropping out of her Open University course.
"I avoid leaving the house... Trauma makes it impossible to carry on."
Nikolic denied assault by penetration, arguing he had consent, but a jury at Norwich Crown Court found him guilty on 31 March.
Giles Fleming, for the prosecution, said that even two years on, Ms Piggin was still suffering.
Reading from her victim impact statement, he said the "consequences were devastating" and that she was suffering with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
"He didn't just violate my body, he took the person I was.
"Even now, two years on, I can still feel his touch," she said in her statement.
The court heard how Ms Piggin still scrubs herself "raw in the shower" following the sexual assault.
Recorder Levene said the pair had a "warm, affectionate relationship" before the incident.
"You entirely misread the situation," he told Nikolic, adding "I do take into account your lack of maturity."
Nikolic was also handed a five-year restraining order.

Merseyrail trains suspended after 'operational incident'

Merseyrail has suspended some services on the Wirral line this morning, July 31, due to an "operational incident". Trains on the West Kirby and New Brighton line are currently not running due to an incident at Birkenhead North. A rail replacement bus service is running between New Brighton station and Hamilton Square, and between West Kirby and Hamilton Square. Rail tickets are being accepted on all Wirral Arriva services, and West Kirby line users will also have their tickets accepted on Stagecoach's 38 Bus. Disruption is expected to last on both lines until around 10am. The Chester and Ellesmere Port lines are running as normal. He came across a missing girl and hatched a nasty plan

A predatory sex offender abused a missing 15-year-old girl after encountering her alone at night. Brandon Ormond convinced his victim that he was a "good person" after approaching her in the street and handing her religious literature. But he then whisked the vulnerable teen away to a secluded area near to a beach, where he subjected her to a series of vile sexual acts. Having then abandoned her once more in the early hours, she was ultimately discovered by police in distress near to a Morrisons supermarket. Liverpool Crown Court heard yesterday afternoon, Wednesday, that the teenager went missing from home before travelling to New Brighton, Wirral, by bus, arriving in the area at around 10.30pm. She was then located by police at around 6am the following day, at which stage she "became visibly upset" and disclosed to officers that she had been subjected to a sexual assault. READ MORE: What I saw Man United supporters do in New York spoke volumes - I bet it wasn't the case for Everton READ MORE: Hillsborough families urge Keir Starmer not to hire former S*n editor Frances Wilmott, prosecuting, described how the girl went on detail how Ormond, of Ripon Road in Wallasey, had approached her and began talking to her. Despite having been "initially wary" of him, the 29-year-old went on to "tell her that he was a Christian and gave her a religious leaflet", which "made her think he was a good person". The two thereafter sat on a bench, where the defendant asked if he could put his arm around her while "saying it was cold". Ormond subsequently suggested that they move to an underpass near to the beach as it "would be warmer", then began kissing the schoolgirl in this location in spite of being told of her young age. Having subsequently "asked if she wanted to have sex", he pulled down his trousers and performed a sexual act upon her and "told her he thought she was fit" before being disturbed by a barking dog. Ormond then left the girl and returned home at around 3.30am, leaving her to walk to the nearby Morrisons store alone before being found by police at daybreak. Having been identified and arrested, he told detectives that he believed the complainant was homeless and aged 18. When his phone was analysed, it was found to contain a number of pictures of "partially dressed young girls in sexualised poses". These photographs did not result in criminal charges however, as they were not deemed to be indecent images by law. Martine Snowdon, defending, told the court: "There are references from a number of people who speak well of him. He has read to me a short letter which he wanted to write to your honour, reinforcing his remorse and recognising the impact. "He had difficult circumstances in his upbringing. A single mother brought him up. He had a relationship with his father, although he died a few years ago. He fell out of education. He is motivated to work in a positive way and hopes to be a better person. He has got support with that and a willingness to do that." Ormond admitted two counts of sexual activity with a child and causing a child to engage in sexual activity. Appearing via video link to HMP Liverpool wearing a navy blue Regatta fleece and with a crucifix on show around his neck, he was jailed for 38 months. Sentencing, Judge David Swinnerton said: "You were 29 when you sexually abused [victim's name], who was 15 years of age, although that was not the sum total of her vulnerabilities. You have no previous convictions, and that is something that I will take into account in your favour. "She ran away from home. She travelled to New Brighton, where, in what must have been the early hours of the morning, you came across her alone. I do not know how much time you spent with her, but you left her alone at 3.30 in the morning. "It must have been obvious to you quite quickly that she was young, and she told you that she was 15. It must have been obvious to you that she was vulnerable from the fact that it was cold. "She was somebody who needed your help. It should have been obvious to you that she had other difficulties. Yet, despite that, rather than taking her to a police station or calling the police, you invited her to come down an underpass onto the beach, where you sat with her. "From that moment, you were preying on her vulnerability. You need to be aware of the impact that you have had. Her life, her self esteem, her self confidence, her ability to cope with the world and others, all of this has been compromised by what you did to her. "You were under the influence of alcohol. You have sought help while in custody. I think you say that you had something like six cans before you committed these offences. I take into account that you show some remorse. "You yourself come from a background which was, in some ways, difficult. I am satisfied that you do show an interest sexually in young girls." Ormond was also handed an indefinite sexual harm prevention order. He will be required to sign the sex offenders' register for life.

Soaring numbers of Inverclyde kids going to A&E for emergency dental treatment

SHOCKING new figures show the number of children in Inverclyde needing emergency treatment for tooth decay has soared. The statistics, released through freedom of information legislation, show the number of patients under 18 attending both Inverclyde Royal and the Royal Hospital for Children has doubled in the last five years. Health board figures also show that in total 133 men, women and children attended Inverclyde Royal for dental care over that period of time. Across Greater Glasgow and Clyde, there was a huge 109 per cent increase in hospital attendances for emergency dental treatment - and nearly a third of all visits to A&E for issues relating to tooth decay were by children. The figures underline the crisis in NHS dental provision in Inverclyde, with increasing numbers of local residents forced to travel miles to find an NHS dentist as local practices shut down or close their NHS lists to new patients. Inverclyde MP Martin McCluskey says he fears the new figures are only 'the tip of the iceberg'. (Image: George Munro) In response to the local crisis, which saw Inverclyde labelled a 'dental desert', funding was made available to encourage practices to open up in the area. Plans for a new practice in the Waterfront Retail Park were approved by Inverclyde Council earlier this year, but Mr McCluskey says he believes the crisis in local NHS dentistry is undermining years of efforts to improve children's teeth. Following his FOI request, Mr McCluskey told the Telegraph: "People across our area know from their own experience how difficult it is to find a dentist. 'These figures demonstrate beyond doubt that the SNP are asleep at the wheel when it comes to dental care in our area. "The Scottish Government have promised time and again to reform the NHS and get to grips with the health and social care crisis, and time and again they have failed. 'So much work has been undertaken over the years to improve children's teeth and to set them up for the rest of their lives. 'This risks being undone by poor access to dentistry and a system that is creaking locally. I expect many more children will have been treated as emergency cases at local dentists. "These cases represent the most extreme situations where children have clearly been left in so much pain that parents have had no other option than to taken them to A&E." In June 2024, emergency dental clinics in Greenock Health Centre were piloted for a short time following the closure of MyDentist in George Square. Mr McCluskey launched a campaign last year to improve NHS dental provision in the area after the Ardgowan Practice in Greenock stopped treating patients on the NHS, blaming government underfunding and a rise in running costs. He added: "It is clear that this situation, already bad before the pandemic, has been allowed to deteriorate since then, and this will continue unless pressure is applied to force the Scottish Government to act.' (Image: George Munro) A Scottish Government spokesperson said: 'Our commitment to improving NHS dentistry means communities in Inverclyde and across Scotland will benefit from an increase of almost 15 per cent in funding for primary care dental services planned this year - taking total funding to over half a billion pounds for the first time. "It also includes investment of up to £3 million to improve access and support the NHS dental workforce.' They went on to highlight the flagship Childsmile programme focuses on ensuring every child in Scotland has access to high-quality dental services. The spokesperson added: "The latest National Dental Inspection Programme figures show that 73 per cent of children in Primary 1 have no obvious tooth decay compared with just 58 per cent when it was introduced in 2008. 'The gap between Primary 1 children with no obvious tooth decay living in the most and least deprived areas is the lowest on record. Soaring numbers of children in Inverclyde are attending A&E for emergency dental treatment, new figures have revealed. (Image: Canva) 'Whilst we have more work to do, it's worth noting over one million patients were seen by an NHS dentist between January and March 2025, and Scotland is the only country in the UK that offers free, regular dental examinations for all." A spokesperson for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: " We are continuing to work with general dental practitioners and colleagues within Inverclyde HSCP to identify initiatives to support access to emergency dental care. "Inverclyde also remains an area where Scottish Dental Access Initiative (SDAI) funding is available to support new practices opening in the area, and this initiative has led to one formal application being progressed through due process."
