CWG Live updates: Surging heat today before increasing storm chances into the weekend

Washington Post2 days ago
Welcome to cwg.live, updated around-the-clock by Capital Weather Gang meteorologists.
Happening now: We climb through the 80s in the morning. Afternoon highs feel like 100 to 105 when factoring in humidity, and a heat advisory is in effect. A few pop-up storms are possible.
What's next? The heat backs off some over the weekend, but humidity does not. Afternoon and evening storm chances increase.
Today's daily digit — 2/10: Summer wallops us with such a shot of heat that even the storms have a hard time developing. | 🤚 Your call?
The digit is a somewhat subjective rating of the day's weather, on a 0-to-10 scale.
Forecast in detail
Today (Thursday): The heat is on with 80s in the morning and low to mid-90s in the afternoon. Humidity is high enough that it feels 10 degrees hotter than the air temperature. Sunshine dominates but isolated pop up storms are possible in the afternoon toward the evening. Confidence: Medium-High
Tonight: Temperatures remain in the 80s through the evening as any stray storms quickly die off. Overnight lows only slip to the mid- to upper 70s. Confidence: Medium-High
Tomorrow (Friday): Despite a warm start and plenty of sun, a steady northwest breeze slows the warmup with most areas 'only' reaching mid-80s to lower 90s. Our typical late afternoon storms may be more numerous than Thursday, especially south of D.C., and come with the risk of locally heavy downpours. Confidence: Medium
Tomorrow night: Scattered showers and storms are likely to linger into the evening before partial clearing. Overnight lows dip to the mid-60s to lower 70s. Confidence: Medium
A look ahead
Showers and storms are fairly active Saturday and Sunday afternoons, lingering well into the evening. Plenty of humidity raises the risk of heavy downpours and makes highs in the mid-80s to lower 90s uncomfortable. Lows run in the upper 60s to mid-70s. Confidence: Medium
We should get a bit of relief on Monday and Tuesday as a weak cool front pushes most of the storms and worst of the humidity to our south. That makes being in the 80s feel not so bad! But don't get used to it, as the heat and humidity look likely to come back stronger than ever Wednesday through Friday. Confidence: Medium

Local nonprofit provides donations to thousands hurt by Texas floods

(WHTM) — After the devastating floods that left thousands displaced in Kerr County, Texas, one Cumberland County nonprofit is helping in the recovery process. Mission Central of Mechanicsburg has been donating to those affected by disasters nationwide since 2002. Today, they packed a truck with 900 sanitation buckets, looking to assist in cleaning and laundry, as well as 2,000 menstrual hygiene kits. Executive Director Hope Harrison says the most important part of disaster relief is listening. 'For us, it's very important that we wait until they get to the ground and find out what the needs actually are, and so right now those 3 things are the biggest needs,' said Harrison. 'As time moves on, we'll hear more disaster relief, we're gonna hear more, and it will change.' The truck is expected to arrive in Texas tomorrow. Mission Central plans to send another in the coming days, as they accept donations year-round. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Extreme heat expected this weekend in South Florida could cause health risks to some

The NEXT Weather Team is tracking a scorching weekend across South Florida. While we will not be expecting a Heat Advisory, we will see heat indexes of 100-105 throughout the day on Saturday. Those triple digit "feels like" temperatures will return on Sunday. A high-pressure system moving across Northern Florida is driving away any chance we have of rain this weekend. The heat indexes will peak around noon on Saturday and last through the early evening hours and will not "cool-down" until after midnight. It's important to stay hydrated, limit outdoor afternoon activity and wear light-colored clothing. You're also encouraged to check on your senior relatives and neighbors who are extremely susceptible to the heat. The heat and dry conditions last all weekend with the regular summer rain returning by midweek.

Heat index cranks up "feels-like" temperatures to triple digits in North Texas this weekend

Summer has arrived in Texas. A typical summertime weather pattern is in place with lots of sunshine, heat and very little rain. Temperatures Saturday morning started off in the upper 70s with partly cloudy skies. Afternoon highs will once again top out in the mid to upper 90s with "feels-like" temperatures around 102 degrees. It will be an ideal pool day on Saturday – remember the sunblock and to reapply every couple of hours. A few clouds will greet North Texans Sunday morning with temperatures in the upper 70s once again. High pressure will dominate the weather for the next week, keeping North Texas dry with temperatures in the mid to upper 90s. Remember those heat safety precautions and never leave pets or kids in the car.
