Talking Shop with Blueland founder Sarah Paiji Yoo
When it comes to following an eco-friendly lifestyle, Blueland founder Sarah Paiji Yoo doesn't just talk the talk. She's fully committed to making all parts of her family's life as 'green' as possible — in fact, she used to concoct her own toothpaste tablets using an at-home press. You don't necessarily need to do that, but if you're interested in reducing waste and cutting back on single-use plastic, Yoo recommends making small changes that add up long-term. 'The swaps are so sneaky,' says Yoo. For example, ditch paper towels and plastic bags and opt for reusable alternatives instead.
Yoo tackles sustainable cleaning and body care using her Blueland products, but for everything else, she swears by a handful of essentials she's discovered over the years. I talked to Yoo about her all-time favorites below, including the water balloons that keep her kids entertained for hours and her go-to white button down.

Mioceo Reusable Paper Towels
'These are a replacement for paper towels and napkins, and I use them every day, multiple times a day,' says Yoo. She even had one sitting next to her and held it up for me to see during our video interview. 'They're the first ones I found about six years ago and I've been using them ever since. We really don't use any paper towels or napkins around the house. Once you make the switch, it's just the new baseline.'
Yoo keeps stacks of reusable paper towels in her bathrooms and kitchen so it's the first thing she and her family reach for. She also uses them as a replacement for wet wipes. 'A lot of parents carry wipes around, but all you need is a cloth that won't break down and a liquid like water.' Yoo throws the reusable paper towels in the washing machine with her laundry whenever she's doing a load.

Maria McManus
'I shop pre-owned and pre-loved when I can, even for my kids. If there's anything I need or see that I want, I always check The Real Real, Poshmark or eBay first. I'm always surprised by what I can find in really great condition at incredible prices,' says Yoo. 'It can be harder to find things like a crisp white button down that's pre-owned, so one of my favorite brands is Maria McManus. Her brand revolves around creating responsible, sustainable clothing and using fewer chemicals, less water and really minimizing waste during the production process. I find that all the details and materials she chooses to use are thoughtful, and she encourages customers to purchase less and wear their garments more.'
'Both of my sons play baseball, and gum and baseball go hand in hand. It's tough because I know the facts: gum is plastic, that's why it doesn't break down when you chew it over and over,' says Yoo. 'But there are brands out there like Simply Gum, which is petroleum-based and plastic free. Obviously [my son] still chews regular bubble gum at games, but we make sure that plastic-free gum is readily available at home.' Simply Gum is available in flavors like peppermint, cinnamon, coffee and maple.
Soppycid Reusable Water Balloons
'When it's warm out, the kids use reusable water balloons, which keeps them busy for hours,' says Yoo. 'You fill them with water and they have a magnetic closure. The kids throw them at each other and throw them at things, and you're not wasting anything since the balloons aren't single-use.' These multicolored reusable water balloons are made from soft silicone and they come with a drawstring storage bag.
Blueair Pure 511 Air Purifier
'I'm a big believer in using an air purifier, especially knowing what I know about microplastics in the air and synthetic fabrics that are in most rugs and clothes,' says Yoo. Her favorite models are from Blueair. She has the brand's Pure 511 for small rooms like her office, as well as the 211i Max for large rooms like bedrooms. 'It's so easy to replace the filter every six months or so. Some brands out there tell you to replace the filter every month or so, which is a lot,' she says.
GIR Reusable Silicone Straws
'Reusable straws are something that's always been a staple in our home, especially with kids,' says Yoo. 'For many adults, a straw is not always necessary, but for kids, I find that they drink a lot more when they're using one.' She buys these silicone straws from GIR, which her family uses for hot and cold beverages. They come in a pack with a cleaning wand and a travel case.
Stasher Bags
You won't find single-use plastic bags in Yoo's home. Instead, she opts for reusable silicone bags from Stasher. Yoo fills them with almost anything that fits, especially snacks for her kids. The bags are oven-safe up to 425 degrees Fahrenheit, as well as dishwasher- and microwave-safe.

How to make fruit, veg and other food last longer in your kitchen
Mindful about consumption and avoiding waste? There are so many little things we can do to make positive changes; I hope you find these suggestions helpful. I used to buy large packets of disposable sponges — the ones that had a yellow sponge and a scouring green side — without really thinking how bad they might be for the environment. What I didn't realise was that the sponges release microplastics every time they are used, they aren't recyclable and go straight to landfill, where they take up to 500 years (!) to degrade. I made a simple change to plant-based cellulose sponges (£2.20, They are much more durable than their plastic-based counterpart and last for months. You can compost them after you have finished using them. Many washing-up liquids contain chemicals that are harmful to the environment. If you have a local refill shop, use a glass bottle to restock the washing up liquid from an eco-friendly brand (such as Another option is to purchase a refillable foaming washing-up spray and powders (£12, or £18, Replace your plastic dish brushes with wooden alternatives that have Tampico natural bristles. You can find many brands that have replacement heads (£6, They should last for months. When I was a child, disposable kitchen towels were just an expense that my mum didn't buy into — as an adult I feel the same. We have a large basket of tea towels that we use as an alternative to oven mitts and dish towels, and for covering food and general cleaning or mopping up messes. If you are a fan of kitchen towels, you can buy rolls of machine-washable reusable towels, usually made of organic cotton, that you pop onto your kitchen towel handle (£28.70 for 12, • Read more expert advice on property, interiors and home improvement Disposable wipes are so wasteful. In our house we use cloths for cleaning and polishing, and I also use compostable Swedish dishcloths (£5.50 for four, a cross between a dishcloth and a sponge, made from plant-based cellulose and waste cotton. I have them in a number of colours and use a colour-coded system for the different jobs in our house. For on-the-go food storage, I tend to use stainless steel food containers (from £27.95, — they are durable, dishwasher-safe and resistant to scratches and rust. For food storage in the fridge, I have a collection of stackable glass containers with bamboo lids, which I love because I like to see the food inside (£6, I also reuse glass jars for smaller items. I have two favourite types for this purpose: a trusty jam jar and a large pickle jar. For the freezer, I favour silicone as a reusable alternative to standard freezer bags (£12.99 for two, I also freeze smaller amounts of food in glass jars, which requires a little preparation to avoid issues like jar breakage: • Make sure that any food that you freeze in jars is cool before freezing as rapid temperature changes can cause glass to crack.• Leave at least 3cm of headspace at the top of the jar to allow for expansion.• Do not fill past the shoulders of the jar and put on the lids loosely until fully frozen. Once the food is fully frozen, you can tighten the lid.• When you are ready to defrost the contents of a jar, defrost slowly, either in the fridge or at room temperature. I always wash and dry vegetables before storing them. Fill a sink with cold water, add 2–3 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda and give the vegetables a bath for up to ten minutes. Using a natural vegetable brush, gently scrub the surfaces to remove stubborn dirt. Add your veggies to a colander and rinse thoroughly. Pat them dry with a soft towel and allow to air-dry; they can now be stored. Leafy greensLine a large container with a damp, cotton towel. Place the leaves on top and place in the fridge. Root vegetablesRemove the leafy tops and store in a container in the fridge. Potatoes and sweet potatoesStore in a cool, dark and well-ventilated place. Refrigerating can affect the structure and taste of potatoes. • 6 essential home appliances to buy: from washing machines to air fryers Onions and garlicStore in a cool, dark and well-ventilated place. Refrigerating isn't recommended as it can affect the texture and flavour. Keep onions separate from potatoes, as they can spoil each other quickly. Broccoli and cauliflowerKeep in the fridge and only wash just before eating as the water can cause spoilage. TomatoesStore at room temperature until they are ripe. If you find you have more than you can eat, keep them in the fridge to extend their freshness; just make sure you take them out and bring to room temperature before eating, to maximise their flavour. Peppers, cucumbers and courgettesBest stored in the fridge to prolong their life. I have a cotton 'salad bag' that I use to store them. MushroomsKeep in a paper bag in the fridge. I avoid washing mushrooms before I store them as this leads to them becoming slimy. It's best to brush or wipe them just before use. AsparagusYou can store your asparagus like a little bunch of flowers. Trim the ends and place them upright in a jar with 3cm of water at the bottom. Change the water every few days. BananasStore separately from every other fruit or vegetable. Bananas produce ethylene, which is a plant hormone that accelerates its ripening process and can also ripen the fruit and vegetables around them more quickly. BerriesFind a clean container, pop a small dry towel or reusable kitchen towel in the bottom and place your berries on top. The towel will absorb any extra moisture that otherwise would spoil them. Don't wash berries until they are ready to be used. This is an edited extract from My Plastic-Free Home: Simple Steps to Live More Sustainably by Kate Jones (HarperCollins £12.99), out July 31. PSA: This NBC Select editor-favorite Shark dryer brush is 50% off on Amazon right now
Whether your hair is curly, straight, wavy or natural, having the right hair tools on hand to style your hair is a huge step in the right direction — they make the difference between having a quick and easy session, versus being stuck in the mirror for hours. Shark is known for their quality tools across the board, including vacuums, air purifiers, hair tools and more, and the Shark SmoothStyle is no exception. The lightweight, versatile, dryer brush -styling comb combo is great for drying, shaping and styling — and it's also on sale right now for 50% off. Want more from NBC Select? Sign up for our newsletter, The Selection, and shop smarter. Deal of the Day: This heated comb may look like an electric round brush, but it works as a dual straightener and blow dryer. It includes three preset air temperatures, along with an additional heat setting, that you can use on wet or dry hair without leaving any heat damage, according to the brand. It combines nylon and thick, boar bristles with ceramic plates that heat safely up to 420 degrees Fahrenheit — however, the plates are covered by protective teeth that stop you from accidentally burning yourself. The Smoothstyle's light indicator also lets you know when it's heating up, ready to use and off. While testing the Smoothstyle, NBC Select editor Lindsay Schneider, who received a sample from the brand, likes that it's lightweight and easy to use. 'It's really easy to use — there's pretty much no learning curve,' she says. 'Plus, this wasn't super heavy to hold up like some other tools on the market are.' Why trust NBC Select? I'm an associate SEO reporter for NBC Select who's been covering deals and sales for over a year. For this piece, I checked the price of the Shark Smoothstyle heated comb and dryer brush across retailers to find the best deal.

Mrs. Mouth's viral stain remover spray is 20% off on Amazon right now
My colleague and NBC Select reporter Zoe Malin and I write a lot about cleaning. We've covered the best way to clean hardwood floors, eco-friendly cleaning products, how to clean pillows (yes, you can put them in the wash) and much more. So when I found out that Mrs. Mouth's Messy Eater Stain Treater Spray (one of her all-time favorite stain remover sprays) is 20% off on Amazon, I had to make it our deal of the day. Below, I talk more about why it's worth making it part of your everyday cleaning routine. Deal of the Day: Mrs. Mouth's Messy Eater Stain Treater Spray is a popular stain remover spray, especially for those who prefer cleaning products without dyes, fragrances and sulfates. The cleaning solution, which is Safer Choice certified according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is safe to use on clothing, upholstery, carpet, bed sheets and more, without worrying they'll get damaged. 'This stain remover spray is truly magic,' says Malin. 'I've used it to get coffee, red wine, dirt and green juice out of white fabric, including my clothes and upholstered furniture. I keep a bottle at home and a bottle in my bag at all times. Whenever someone uses mine, they almost instantly buy it. I don't use any other stain remover now.' To effectively use the spray, the brand recommends first dampening the stain with water, spraying the solution and then (if possible) adding it to the wash. Want more from NBC Select?
