Tupong assemblyman wins FAS president's post unopposed

KUCHING: Tupong assemblyman Datuk Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman was today elected unopposed as the new president of the Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) for the 2025-2027 term after sports consultant Dr Mohammed Syafiq Abdullah withdrew from contesting at the FAS annual general meeting (AGM) here.
Fazzrudin, who is also Kuching City FA president, took over from Abang Zulkarnain Abang Abdul Rahman, who declined to seek re-election at the AGM today.
Stakan assemblyman Datuk Hamzah Brahim was also elected deputy president unopposed.
The posts of five vice-presidents went to Sophie Shariee with 25 votes, Khairulddin Qalam Daud (24 votes), Khairul Anuar Adeni (23 votes), Hailcal Abdullah (17 votes) and Nichol Agoi (16 votes).
Speaking to reporters later, Fazzrudin said his main task was to promote the Sarawak Premier League as his first major initiative to reignite the local football scene.
He explained that the premier league was scheduled to kick off by September at the latest, explaining that the competition would adopt a 'home' and 'away' format, and feature teams from across all Sarawak divisions.
He said the aim was to strengthen grassroots football by focusing on the development of players, coaches, referees and infrastructure.
"In the long term, as our league grows stronger, we will be able to produce more high-calibre players with the potential to be absorbed into teams in the Malaysian League, or even Indonesia's Liga 1.
"That is my dream—to see Sarawakian players competing on bigger stages.
"It's not an impossible dream, but one that requires a clear strategy, proper planning and phased implementation. God-willing, with consistent effort, we can achieve this goal," he said.
He said among the key priorities outlined by the new FAS leadership was the continued enhancement of coaching quality through courses initiated in the past
.
He added refereeing standards would also be improved through regular training and certification, while attention would be given to field facilities and infrastructure to ensure that every team had access to adequate and high-quality training venues.
Fazzrudin said the state's premier league would be held annually and be limited to local players for now.
"Although there are international students at higher learning institutions in Sarawak who are interested in taking part, their inclusion has not been considered at this stage.
"That said, the possibility of involving them in the future remains open, depending on the needs and development of the league," he added.
The age limit for players was still under discussion, but for the inaugural edition, there would be no age restriction to encourage wider participation.

Sarawakian Azhad put on 10kg only to blaze muaythai trail

KUCHING (Aug 6): Azhad Haziq Syafaat Abdul Khalid carved his name into the local muaythai history by clinching the 80kg title at the National Combat Sports Championships (Pre-Sukma) & Muaythai National Grand Prix 2025 at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur from July 24-27. The 20-year-old from Petra Jaya displayed grit to overcome Iqmal Arif of Singapore's Gorilla Boxing Club in a fiercely contested final. It earned Azhad the coveted National Championship Belt and made him the first Sarawakian to claim the top national ranking in the 75-80kg weight class. What made the feat even more remarkable was that Azhad wasn't even fighting in his natural weight class. 'This was an entirely new challenge for me,' Azhad told reporters during the thanksgiving and celebration dinner hosted by Sarawak State Muaythai Association president Jumaat Ibrahim at a local restaurant last Saturday. 'I usually compete in the 70kg category. To step into the 75–80kg bracket, I had to put on almost 10kg. It was my first time fighting opponents this size and it wasn't easy.' Yet, under the bright lights and roaring crowd, Azhad dug deep to uncover the discipline, composure and heart to power his way to glory. The Politeknik Kuching student saw the victory not just as a title but also a stepping stone to greater heights. 'This win motivates me to push myself further. I know I still have room to grow and I want to keep improving with every fight,' he said. 'While this win is special, my real focus will be to remain in the 70kg division where I feel most at home. That's where I'll continue to chase my dreams,' he added. Azhad Haziq Syafaat Abdul Khalid

KUCHING (Aug 4): Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) president Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman has expressed his hope that a team from Sarawak will one day lift the prestigious Malaysia Cup, with Kuching City FC currently leading the charge for glory in the nation's top-tier league. Speaking at the launching ceremony of Kuching City FC's new jersey for the upcoming season at Plaza Merdeka yesterday, the man who also helms Kuching City FC as chairman said the club's 10th anniversary marks a significant milestone and should be a turning point towards greater ambition. 'This is the 10th year of Kuching City FC's existence. For us, this year is the most crucial and important. We believe that the most important person for Kuching City FC is none other than our fans,' he remarked. He pointed to the passion and undying support from fans as the main driving force behind the team's journey and determination to keep pushing forward through the various challenges faced since its formation in 2015. 'As we commemorate this milestone, we do not forget our humble beginnings in the Liga Bola Sepak Rakyat. With faith and perseverance, we progressed step by step, eventually reaching the final in 2016. It was not easy, but we never gave up,' he said. Fazzrudin, who is also Tupong assemblyman and Chief Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier, said the ultimate dream now is for a Sarawakian club to bring the Malaysia Cup home. 'We want to bring the Malaysia Cup back to Sarawak as that is our ambition, and though people may call it just a dream, it must be supported by planning, discipline and the right strategies. With strong belief, this dream can become reality,' he said. 'We ask for your support and do come to the stadium and become our 12th man. Let us push this team forward together,' he appealed to the fans. Yesterday's event also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Kuching City FC and Lea Sports Centre, marking a five-year strategic partnership. The club has registered a total of 29 players, including the newly permitted three additional players allowed by the Malaysian Football League (MFL). 'This year, many teams are preparing strongly. We expect tougher challenges ahead, but our objective remains, which is to be in the top five of the league,' Fazzrudin said. Fans were urged to fill the stands in the next home fixture against Kelantan on August 9 at Stadium Negeri. Also present at the event was Lea Sports Centre managing director Raymond Sim. fazzrudin abdul rahman football association of sarawak Kuching City FC
