Wisconsin rival head coach receives contract extension

USA Today13-07-2025
The Minnesota Golden Gophers announced a contract extension for head coach P.J. Fleck on Wednesday.
The deal adds one year to his original contract, extending it through the 2030 season. According to the Associated Press, Fleck's annual $6 million contract is unchanged with the new deal.
The veteran coach enters his ninth season at the helm in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2025. He has a 58-39 overall record, including six bowl appearances and a 4-4 record against the rival Wisconsin Badgers. The Gophers recently evened that record with a 24-7 triumph over the Badgers to close the 2024 season.
The program's press release notes that Fleck's winning percentage (.597) is third-best in program history among those with at least 45 career games. Entering his ninth season, he'll soon be one of Minnesota's longest-tenured.
Wisconsin will close its 2025 season on the road in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Nov. 29. After losing all three trophy games for the first time in program history (Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota), by a combined score of 110-42, it goes without saying that the Badgers reclaiming Paul Bunyan's Axe would go a long way toward redirecting the program's trajectory in a positive direction.

Notre Dame football to host Chicago 2027 4-star cornerback Tavares Harrington this fall

Notre Dame football has had great success recruiting its neighboring state of Illinois, and in the 2027 cycle they are trying to continue that trend. Tavares Harrington, a 6-foot, 3-inch and 175-pound cornerback announced on Wednesday what his plans will be for this fall, and will be in South Bend as the Irish take on Texas A&M on Sept. 13th according to Rivals. He's one of the nation's top players, as the 247Sports Composite has him as the No. 99 overall prospect in the 2027 class. Notre Dame is battling multiple others schools for Harrington such as Miami, Georgia, Michigan, Auburn, Alabama and few others. The visits this fall will go a long way in impressing the star corner, as you have to believe that the teams who he will be visiting are near the top of his list. Hopefully Harrington sees everything that Notre Dame can offer him, and the Irish win out in his recruitment. Steelers defender reveals season-ending injury on social media

The injury news in Pittsburgh keeps coming — and you can't help but feel for Steelers DT Dean Lowry, who took to social media to reveal his season-ending ACL injury. While Lowry was placed on the Reserve/Injured List a few days prior, it was his message on Instagram that caught fans' attention — one of understanding that there are risks required when playing football. "During a training camp practice last week I sustained an ACL injury that will likely end my season," Lowry wrote on Instagram. "Hard to comprehend the thoughts and emotions I have felt since then. Heartbroken I won't get to fully experience the highs and lows of an NFL season with a group I love going to work with. The risks associated with this game and the unique aspect of a football team are what make this sport like no other. I'm completely resolved to turn this negative into a positive with gratitude each step of the way." The nine-year veteran signed with the Steelers back in April 2024 on a two-year deal — providing Pittsburgh with capable, experienced depth on the defensive line. While Lowry tries to find the positives, we at Steelers Wire hope he can bounce back in a major way when recovered next season — potentially earning his way back onto the Steel City roster.
