Texans' Nico Collins named to PFF's list for top 10 ‘safety-blanket WRs'

USA Today19-07-2025
How secure of hands does Houston Texans Pro Bowl receiver Nico Collins have as a go-to target for C.J. Stroud? One reporter thinks he's a top 10 option in the passing game entering this fall.
Pro Football Focus' Lauren Gray recently compiled a list describing the NFL's best safety blanket pass-catchers. Per the parameters, a security blanket is someone who was their quarterback's top target when blitzed/under pressure.
Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Drake London led the way with the 21.1 percent threat rate, while Baltimore Ravens WR Zay Flowers ranked third with a 20 percent threat rate behind Los Angeles Chargers rookie Ladd McConkey.
As for Collins, he came in ninth with an 18.4 percent success rate after helping the Texans secure a second AFC South division title in as many seasons.
"Collins recorded a league-best 90.9 PFF receiving grade with this quarterback under pressure last season, after securing 29 catches for 411 yards, 18 first downs and a touchdown," Gray wrote. "He ranked third in yards after contact (52) and explosive gains (15) and led the league in yards per route run (2.60).
"Few have been greater than Collins in pressured situations over the past two seasons. He ranks in the top five in catches (41) and receiving yards (769) and the top three in first downs (32), explosive gains (24) and yards per route run (2.34). He sports the NFL's second-best pressured PFF receiving grade in that span (90.6)."
Collins being a safety blanket for Stroud helped Houston's gunslinger go from a No. 2 overall pick into a top 10 passer with a pair of playoff wins. Even with a hamstring injury that limited him to 12 games, Collins still managed to finish with over 1,000 receiving yards, 68 catches and seven touchdowns.
His 83.8 yards per game ranked top five among receivers last fall, though he was averaging 111.4 yards per game over the first four games. Hopefully, Collins can build off his productive pairing with Stroud in Year 3 together while still serving as a safety blanket on a run past the AFC Divisional Round playoffs.

Dolphins backup OL Andrew Meyer out "weeks" with an injury

The Dolphins have lost backup interior offensive lineman Andrew Meyer for "weeks" with an injury, coach Mike McDaniel said Wednesday. 'He's had a great camp, really stepped his game, and I'm very impressed with his play,' McDaniel said, via Dante Collinelli of 'He will be out weeks, but he's built a strong foundation as one of the top performers if you want to talk about growth of game. One of the top guys from year one to year two that has made tremendous strides.' Meyer practiced with the first team at center until Aaron Brewer returned from a soft-tissue injury in his right leg. Meyer's injury is undisclosed. He made the team as an undrafted rookie last year but he did not see any action. The Dolphins also are missing offensive linemen Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg. They have signed Daniel Brunskill and Germaine Ifedi in camp.

Packers QB Jordan Love wants to make more off-schedule plays in 2025

Healthy again, Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love wants to be a more creative playmaker on off-schedule plays in 2025. Love told Kevin Clark of ESPN that accuracy is a big emphasis coming out of the 2024 season, but he also wants to do more off-schedule playmaking now that his knee and groin injuries are healed. 'Create more plays, and make more off-schedule plays and use my legs more when things break down,' Love said. Love injured his knee in Week 1 and missed two games, and later injured his groin in late October. The two leg injuries limited his ability to break contain of the pocket and find plays outside of structure — a big part of his game as an athletic, big-play-hunting passer. 'I wasn't creating as many off schedule plays last season,' Love said. 'Obviously I was dealing with some injuries and different things like that, but I think that's a big part of my game that I got to get back into.' Love said he is 'pushing at practice' to emphasize creating the off-schedule plays. The reps during training camp are important to develop muscle memory and chemistry for himself and his receivers. At many practices this summer, Love has scrambled or found completions outside the pocket on extended plays. A quarterback who can make plays off schedule can help mitigate the impact of pressure and turn empty plays into positive ones. While Love was terrific at avoiding sacks last season, his mobility — and possibly his accuracy too — was affected by the injuries. The 2025 season is a fresh start, and Love wants to take a step forward. 'It's just taking that next step, continuing to keep growing myself and finding ways to get better and keep improving on things,' Love said. 'A big focus for me is just the consistency. Trying to be the best player I can be every play with my footwork and accuracy…just build the little things and keep stacking.'
