Andaman man arrested by CBI for submitting fake certificate to get govt job

Port Blair, July 29 (PTI) A person was arrested by the CBI for allegedly submitting a fake certificate to get a job in the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, officials said on Tuesday.
The accused was identified as Dipak Kumar Das, a resident of ABC Colony in Port Blair's Shadipur area, they said.
He got the job of lab assistant in DHS by using a false diploma in medical laboratory technique (DMLT) certificate, they added.
'Investigation revealed that he got the job on the basis of a DMLT certificate issued by the Institute of Medical & Technological Research (IMTR), Kolkata. Further enquiry revealed that the requirement was to submit a certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) course, but he submitted the DMLT certificate," an officer said.
'It was found that West Bengal State Council of Technical Education (WBSCTE) used to offer a 1-year course in MLT to IMTR Calcutta, but they never issued any MLT or DMLT certificate in favour of Das," he said. PTI SN SN SOM

GORAKHPUR A Class 8 student was allegedly abducted, assaulted with iron rods and forced to lick spit by his classmates over a dispute stemming from a teasing incident in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Thursday. The attackers could be heard issuing threats to shoot the victim in public if he dared to speak out as they forced him to lick spit from the ground. Officials said the video of the assault was allegedly recorded by the accused and uploaded online to further shame the boy. 'They forced him to lick spit and threatened to shoot him in public if he spoke out. The trauma has left my son terrified and he has locked himself inside the house since,' the mother was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. Based on preliminary investigation, Chiluatal station house officer (SHO) Atul Srivastava said the 'assault was a reaction to a teasing incident at school'. 'The video is being thoroughly examined and appropriate legal action will be taken,' he said. Srivastava said that the two accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015.

Man charged with murder for shooting Indian student in Canada
Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 8 (PTI) The man who fired the stray bullet that killed 21-year-old Indian student Harsimrat Randhawa in Canada have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, an official said. Hamilton Police, who arrested 32-year-old Jerdaine Foster at Niagara Falls in Ontario on Tuesday, also charged him with three counts of attempted murder, CBC News quoted Acting Det-Sgt Daryl Reid as saying at a news conference. Randhawa, a second-year student enrolled in a physiotherapy course in Mohawk College, was hit by a stray bullet while standing near a bus stop at the intersection of Upper James Street and South Bend Road on April 17. She succumbed to the injury in the hospital. The Indian student had reportedly just gotten off the bus and was waiting to cross the street when the bullet struck her. At least seven people in four cars were involved in a dispute that led up to the shooting. Shots were fired between cars and at least two guns were involved, the report said. 'Harsimrat was an innocent bystander," the report quoted Reid as saying on Thursday, 'She was simply trying to make her way home from a local gym when she was struck and killed." No other arrests have been made in the case. 'The investigation is still ongoing, and we will do everything in our power to identify, locate and arrest all these people that are involved in this death," Reid said. He added that Foster, who has ties to Hamilton, Halton and Niagara regions and lived in short-term rental properties, was previously known to police. Probe Agency's Conviction Rate In PMLA Cases Over 92% In Last 5 years: Data
New Delhi: The conviction rate secured by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in money laundering cases over the last five years has been more than 92 per cent, an official data said. According to the data accessed by PTI, various special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) courts delivered judgments in 41 cases registered under the said law between January 2020 and July 2025, out of which conviction orders were passed in 38 instances leading to the conviction of 98 accused. The conviction rate is calculated by using the formula of taking the total number of cases in which the accused have been convicted as a percentage of total cases decided on merits on the issue of money laundering, according to officials and the data. Hence, the conviction rate secured by the ED in money laundering cases over the last five years comes to 92.68 per cent (38/41X100) in about five years, they said. The ED has been regularly targeted by political parties in the opposition, claiming its actions were biased and that its conviction rate was "poor". A report prepared by the agency for the 2024-25 financial year said while the legal framework under the PMLA provides for a "structured mechanism" for prosecution, the timely completion of trials continued to face several "systemic" and "procedural" hurdles. The report released in May said a "primary challenge" in this context was that prosecution of money laundering cases was "intrinsically" linked to the progress of the investigation or trial of the corresponding predicate or primary offence. "Delays in those proceedings invariably impact the PMLA trial," the report said. According to the PMLA scheme, which came into force in 2005, the ED cannot register an independent case but has to base its complaint on a primary FIR of the police or any other investigating agency, which is called the predicate offence. The data also said the ED registered just over 5,063 money laundering cases over the same period (January 2020-July 2025) and the courts ordered confiscation of assets worth Rs 55.14 crore in the context of conviction cases. The courts also ordered confiscation of assets to the tune of Rs 15,558.21 crore under section 8(7) of PMLA (cases where trial cannot be conducted) during the same period. PTI NES KSS KSS
