She added, 'Markhor is found in Chitral, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kohistan and Hunza regions of Pakistan. Markhor is considered to be a majestic animal which is a symbol of Pakistan's rich natural heritage.'
The Chief Minister said, 'Protection of Markhor represents our commitment to the conservation of biodiversity, and maintaining ecological balance. We all pledge to work together to protect not only Markhor but all endangered species. Historic steps are being taken to protect wildlife in Punjab.'

On CM's directions Independence Day celebrations stepped up
LAHORE: On directions by Chief Minister, Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, 79th Independence Day celebrations have been geared up across Punjab on the second day of scheduled festivities, and colourful events were held at tehsil, district and divisional levels in connection with the Independence Day. Punjab is experiencing flux of national flags, as streets, markets, squares, intersections, and roads are beautifully decorated. Independence Day activities were held in Gujrat, Khanewal, Sahiwal and Khushab besides Jhang, Vehari, Jhelum, Toba Tek Singh, Gujranwala, Chiniot, Sargodha, and Chakwal. In Jhelum, Chief Minister's Advisor for Health Major General Azhar Kayani (Retd) attended the Independence Day ceremony, and cut a cake of Pakistan's birthday. He alongside others also attended a ceremony in which a specially-prepared several-meter-long flag was unveiled. Sindh govt urged to declare new ‘marine protected areas'
KARACHI: The WWF-Pakistan has urged the Sindh government to declare new Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) along the province's coast to safeguard fragile marine ecosystems and biodiversity, particularly in the ecologically important regions of Pitiani and Dabbo Creeks in the Indus Delta. The call came as part of the organization's statement ahead of World Marine Protected Areas Day, marked globally on August 1. Recognizing recent conservation progress, WWF-Pakistan lauded the government of Balochistan for its declaration of Miani Hor as the country's third MPA on July 29. The site joins Astola Island and Churna Island, declared MPAs in 2017 and 2024 respectively. These efforts, WWF-Pakistan noted, mark the beginning of a new chapter for marine conservation in Pakistan, achieved through sustained collaboration between government bodies, conservation groups, wildlife experts, and coastal communities. The establishment of MPAs is considered critical for meeting international biodiversity goals under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, to which Pakistan is a signatory. The framework commits countries to protecting 30 percent of global oceans by 2030—a target known as '30 by 30.' WWF-Pakistan's Director General Hammad Naqi Khan emphasized that the country's coastal and marine ecosystems are under increasing pressure from overfishing, destructive fishing gear, untreated sewage, plastic pollution, and the broader effects of climate change. CM promises nonstop water supply in 1,200 Model Villages
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif chaired a meeting for a briefing on the Model Village, 'Suthra Punjab and Waste to Value Projects. She reviewed the progress made on a project to develop 1,200 model villages. She said on the occasion that round the clock water supply, complete sewage network and waste management and treatment plants would be built in every model village." She added, "Punjab's model villages will also have paved streets, road rehabilitation, children's parks and tree plantation." She highlighted, "Houses will be numbered and signboards will also be installed in model villages." The chief minister was briefed by the authorities concerned on the solar system-powered water supply and sewage system for the model villages. She was apprised that development projects in 130 villages in the pilot phase have been completed. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif sought a deadline for the early completion of the model village project, and said, "Priority will be determined in the model village project by keeping in mind public needs of the area. Every village will be fully developed under Model Village Project."
