7 most devastating TV deaths of all time that fans still can't handle

Metro21-04-2025
Warning: spoilers ahead for several TV shows, including The Last of Us season 2 episode 2.
Sometimes, a fictional character's death on a TV show is so gut-wrenchingly crushing, that it stays with you for many, many years.
One of the prime examples of this is Ned Stark (Sean Bean) in Game of Thrones, when the lead character was brutally killed off at the end of the first season.
Now, The Last of Us season 2 episode 2 has revealed one of the most heartbreaking TV deaths in recent years at a crucial turning point in the story of smuggler Joel (Pedro Pascal) and his surrogate daughter Ellie (Bella Ramsey).
Some viewers have said they're 'never going to recover' from the lead character being killed off… and honestly, as fans ourselves, we agree, even if video games knew that it was coming.
Spoilers ahead for TV shows including Game of Thrones, The Last of Us and The Walking Dead, as we look back on some of the most devastating deaths in TV history. You have been warned.
Obviously, we couldn't start this list without going to Ned Stark first. Even though people who've read George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books already knew the head of House Stark was going to perish, it didn't soften the blow to his neck whatsoever.
In the penultimate episode of season one, Ned's head is chopped off in front of the crowds at King's Landing after King Joffrey Barathon (Jack Gleeson) demands: 'Bring me his head!', an order that's executed by Ser Ilyn Payne (Wilko Johnson).
The number of times Sean, 66, has died on screen has become a running joke in his career, with another memorable death scene taking place in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, when he's taken down by three arrows.
Even now, fans are still shaken by how massively Ned's death changed the trajectory of Game of Thrones, with Rodin-V writing on Reddit: 'It suddenly became evident how high the stakes were and that nobody was safe.'
The minute that Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal) made his grand entrance on Game of Thrones, boasting both swagger and lethal cunning, he immediately became a fan-favourite.
But that made his brutal death even more distressing, especially when it appeared as though he was winning his fight.
Oberyn arrives in season four, vowing to achieve revenge against the Mountain, Gregor Clegane (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) for raping and murdering his sister, and killing her children.
The Dornish prince finally has his chance to go up against the Mountain in a trial by combat, but rather than strike the killing blow when he has the chance, he makes the fatal mistake of taking his time… and ends up having his skull crushed by his gravely wounded opponent. That bloody death will always be seared on our minds.
Sorry The Last of Us fans, it's true – Joel has met his end in season two episode two at the hands of newcomer Abby (Kaitlyn Dever). Even though video game fans knew that it was coming, it still isn't any less shocking.
At the end of season one, Joel brutally murders members of the Firefly militia group after he discovers that while using Ellie to try and find a cure to the Cordyceps infection, she would die in the process. One of the people he shoots and kills is an unarmed doctor, who turns out to be Abby's father.
After five years of waiting, Abby finally gets her revenge on Joel by beating him to a pulp and then stabbing him in the neck with a broken golf club, with a distraught Ellie forced to watch her surrogate father take his final breaths.
Fans have said that they 'won't ever recover emotionally' from this moment, while others have said this was one of the 'best episodes of TV' they've ever seen. If this is only episode two, who knows how much more painful season two is going to become as it unfolds.
In 2003, teen drama The O.C. premiered, introducing the world to several lead characters including Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton).
In a moment that shook fans' to their core, in the final episode of season three, Marissa dies in a car accident, with Ryan Atwood (Ben McKenzie) pulling Marissa from the burning wreckage, only to watch her die in his arms.
One fan called Mental-Idea9525 wrote on Reddit: 'It was literally so shocking to this day I don't believe it actually happened. I was 17. I must have been in such disbelief I don't even have a real recollection of watching the next season. It was awful – I hated that they did that.'
'I'm rewatching it now. I was 12 when it started. I bawled my eyes out when she died,' said __No__Control, while ladysavagethe21st added in a comment posted two months ago: 'I can't get over it.'
Four seasons into Netflix prison drama Orange Is The New Black, one of the most beloved characters, Poussey Washington (Samira Wiley) is killed in a scene that's utterly heartbreaking.
During a peaceful protest in the prison's cafeteria, Poussey is restrained forcefully on the ground by a police officer, and she tries to tell him that she 'can't breathe'. But by the time he gets off her, it's too late, and she's been suffocated to death.
The episode echoed the death of Eric Garner, a man who was killed in 2014 after he was put in a chokehold by a police officer, and who said 'I can't breathe' 11 times before he died.
'There are people who are watching television who might not have a personal relationship with Black Lives Matter, but they know Poussey,' Samira said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. 'What I've been reading online from people is just this profound sadness, something that they can't shake away.'
It should come as no surprise given the show's title that there is a lot of death in The Walking Dead. But some deaths hit harder than others – and Glenn's was definitely one of those instances.
Glenn Rhee (Steven Reun) was in the show from the start, a man who helps Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) survive a horde of walkers and then is a key part of his group.
In the opening episode of season seven, antagonist Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) beats Glenn in the head with Lucille, a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire.
While some fans of The Walking Dead have argued that Glenn's death should have never happened, others believe it was necessary, with one called Kilatypus writing on Reddit: 'Glenn's death was necessary. Downright to all the gory details. The Walking Dead has never been a show for the faint of heart, no reason to pull punches at the comic's most important death.'
In the season five finale of Grey's Anatomy, which aired in May 2009, a man is being treated in the hospital after jumping in front of a bus to save a woman. More Trending
While initially the doctors don't know the identity of the John Doe due to the severity of his injuries, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) realises that the patient is actually their colleague and friend George O'Malley (TR Knight).
The doctors try desperately to save George's life, but it's confirmed in the first episode of season six that he died.
'It's been 12 years, and I'm still not over George's death 😭😭😭,' one fan called @piupiusibebecutzu commented on YouTube four years ago, while @miastevans7392 added: 'George was the first major character to die. We didn't expect it. We didn't think that they would actually kill off one of the most beloved characters. This was the worst death, cause no one saw it coming.'

Woman horrified after pregnant friend choses 'intestinal' name for baby girl

People urged her to 'risk her friendship' with the mum-to-be in order to try to save the child from inevitable bullying. Choosing a baby name is one of the trickiest decisions a new parent has to make. Do you go for something classic and traditional, or more modern and unique? ‌ Whatever you choose, it sticks with the child for life. So something that sounds cute for a baby, might not suit an adult, while a formal title may seem a bit off for a youngster. ‌ People are influenced by many things when thinking about potential names. From their favourite TV characters to gems and jewellery - and, in some cases, serial killers - there's a whole host of places to find inspiration. ‌ One of the most obvious is turning to family. Many names carry down through the generations of certain families as new parents honour those that have come before them. But, with the potential for lots of grandparents, siblings, aunts, and uncles to choose from, it can be hard to pick the right one without offending anyone. Some people decide to go for compound names; combining the monikers of several relatives to create a unique, new title that references several people. But while this can be a nice touch, it also runs the risk of something not quite sounding right. And this is exactly what has happened for one mum-to-be. The woman is due to give birth to a daughter next month, and she and her husband have already picked out the name. Delighted with their choice, they sent out a WhatsApp message to friends and family with the chosen title. ‌ In a bid to pay homage to their own parents, called Fernando, Cameron, and Lynne, the couple decided to combine the trio of names and come up with something a bit alternative. The result, however, might not go down as well as they hope. A screenshot of the pregnant woman's message was shared on Reddit, where users were aghast at the final choice. Posting on the Tragedeigh forum, where people discuss terribly-spelt names, one user said: "My college friend and the very 'intestinal' sounding new name she chose for her daughter". ‌ The message read: "Our beautiful daughter, due 04/09. FECALYNN - honouring her grandparents Fernando, Cameron, and Lynne - who are important parts of my husband's and my lives." The post has racked up 32,000 likes in the seven days since it was posted, as well as attracting almost 3,000 comments - mostly from horrified Redditors. ‌ The use of 'fecal' in the name led many users to suggest it sounded like the name of a medication to improve bowel movements. One popular comment said: "Honey, have you taken your fecalynn today? I know how constipated you've been..." Someone else replied, adding: "Fecalynn… for when you need to fecalout!" ‌ A third user commented: "Fecalynn sounds like a medication that comes with a lot of unpleasant side effects." And a fourth added: "Ask your doctor if Fecalynn is right for you!" Others were, unsurprisingly, concerned for the impending arrival - and how she would have to deal with a lifetime of mockery with her moniker. The top-rated comment implored the original poster to step in. It read: "Please, for the love of all that is holy, risk your friendship to save this child from a lifetime of bullying before it's too late." ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Another Redditor said: "This kid is f***ed for her whole life. As a teacher I can promise they're making a miserable school life for their child. Really s***ty when you think about it. Just selfish and idiotic." While others suggested different options that the parents-to-be could have chosen. One said: "Couldn't have just named her Fernanda and have two middle names for her other grandparents?" Someone else replied: "Seriously, why have these people never heard of middle names? You don't need to mash everything together."

Top 5 video game developers that have wasted their talents - Reader's Feature

A reader lists the five developers he believes have squandered their abilities, from The Last Of Us maker Naughty Dog to Metal Gear's Hideo Kojima. There is a problem with video games that has become very apparent in recent years, which is that they now take a lot longer to make than they used to (and need a lot more money). Even casual gamers are becoming aware of the problem but one of the knock-on effects of a game taking six or more years to make is that some developers are producing only one game a generation, and sometimes not even managing that. Not only that but they have to choose what it is they're making even more carefully. You can't risk anything too experimental if it's going to cost a fortune and be your only way of generating money for another six years. I feel this is a big reason behind the problems in gaming at the moment and I also think it's making some of the already self-destructive tendencies of some developers even worse. Sadly, I had quite a few ideas for this list and at one point was going to include FromSoftware, because they seem stuck making nothing but Soulslikes. But since they're all really good, and they did make that weird VR game that nobody played, they didn't make the cut. I also considered Bethesda, but their problem is not that they're wasting their talents but that they refuse to learn from their mistakes or get other people to help them. We should be on Fallout: New Vegas 3 by now but either Bethesda are too arrogant or too controlling to stop with the micro-management. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. In the 2000s, Bungie would've easily made the top five of anyone's list of the best developers. They were on fire with the Halo series, and they seemed to do the right thing by leaving it while they were on top and making a big hit of Destiny. But then they fell out with Activision and Destiny 2 went on a sharp decline that it's clearly never getting out of. For the last few years there's been talk of Bungie doing lots of other games that aren't first person shooters but in the end all they've announced is Marathon, which is clearly dead on arrival. They've completely wasted the last 10 years (bad management is the reason always given) and if they're even still around by the end of the year I'll be shocked. The problem with Naughty Dog is that, in terms of basic gameplay, they've been making the same game for nearly two decades now. Uncharted and The Last Of Us might have different tones but they still play the same and I'm really getting tired of it. There never needed to be a The Last Of Us Part 2 – there certainly never needed to be a remake of Part 1 – but they're kind of trapped by their own success, like a typecast movie star. I'm hopeful that Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet will be something different but I have a feeling we'll still be throwing rocks to distract bad guys at some point. I'd just like to see them do something different and inventive, not the same old games where the only thing that's different is the story. In their early days Naughty Dog used to make Crash Bandicoot and Jak And Daxter but Rockstar used to be even more varied, with everything from Smuggler's Run to Midnight Club, Oni, Manhunt, and Max Payne. Heck, technically they used to make Lemmings. Now though they make GTA or GTA in the Wild West and that's it. When Rockstar were coming into their own they used their success to do whatever they wanted, whether it was a table tennis game or a game of The Warriors. They didn't seem to care as long as it was something that interested them. But now that GTA is the biggest thing ever, that success has got too much and they're stuck making only sequels and never inventing anything new. Hideo Kojima isn't quite like these other picks because not only is he just one guy but none of his games, not even Metal Gear Solid, have been that big. But that's not the point. The problem is that one of the world's most celebrated developers has been stuck working on the same franchise (that was past its sell by date by the fourth entry) for 80% of his career. And then, when he broke away and started up his own company, he made a weird, bonkers game and then followed that up with… a sequel that hardly did anything different and completely didn't need to exist. I say this as a fan too, because I do admire the man, but there's an alternative timeline out there where he's made a completely different game every time and I wish that was the one we lived in. No matter what these other companies have done, whether it's being victims of their own success or management problems, Valve will always be the most disappointing. When they made Portal 2 in 2011 they were on top of the world, unstoppable and unquestionably one of the best video game developers in the world. Now? They just run Steam and don't really make games anymore. More Trending They definitely haven't made a normal single-player game since Portal and at this point I don't think there's any reason to expect they ever will. But why? Why throw away all that expertise? Didn't the people at Valve enjoy making video games? Wasn't it satisfying, and lucrative, to have so many hit games, one after another? I just don't get it; it's such a waste. By reader Goldie The reader's features do not necessarily represent the views of GameCentral or Metro. Stacey is targeted again by Joel in upsetting scenes in EastEnders

EastEnders' Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) steps up in dramatic scenes next week when she catches Joel Marshall (Max Murray) deliberately provoking Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner). The explosive moment comes after a difficult period for Stacey, who has already been through the wringer thanks to Joel's disturbing actions. Ever since Joel arrived in Walford earlier this year, he has been nothing but trouble, quickly earning a reputation for stirring up conflict and targeting vulnerable Walford residents. Just days earlier, Stacey was left humiliated when her SecretCam pictures and videos were leaked online. The violation was a devastating blow for Stacey, who has endured her fair share of heartbreak and upset in the past few months. She immediately suspected Joel, given his recent fixation on her and his previous attempts to undermine her confidence. She confronted him in a tense showdown, but Ross jumped to his son's defence, whisking Joel away before Stacey could get any answers. Joel later handed Ross his laptop, claiming he had nothing to hide, and managed to convince his father he was not responsible for the leak. Despite the lack of hard evidence, Stacey stood her ground and reported him to the police, only to be left gutted when they decided to take no further action. Getting out scot-free seemed to embolden Joel even further. Fuelled by anger, Joel shifted his focus to Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James) after discovering that she had a termination. In typical fashion, he stormed over, looking to provoke a reaction, forcing Priya (Sophie Khan Levy) to plead with Ravi (Aaron Thiara) to stay calm. Later, he publicly berated Avani in the street, leaving her shaken. Vicki, who had already begun to see through Joel's facade, stepped in and dragged him away, giving him a strong warning in the process. But Joel just will not stop. More Trending In upcoming scenes, he is seen deliberately goading Stacey yet again, clearly enjoying the distress he is causing. This time, however, Vicki catches him in the act. Outraged, she confronts him on the spot, making it clear that she will not stand for any more of his cruelty.
