State lawmaker files statement of candidacy to run for U.S. House
A Republican state legislator from Madison filed his statement of candidacy Wednesday to run for the state's lone seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Casey Crabtree would be the second Republican candidate in the race, after Attorney General Marty Jackley. Current Republican U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson is running for governor next year.

Crabtree, 42, who currently serves in the state Senate, submitted paperwork to the Federal Election Commission. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but did share his interest in a statement issued last week.
'I'm thankful for Dusty's work in Congress supporting South Dakota and Trump's America First agenda,' he said at the time. 'South Dakota has had giants like John Thune, Kristi Noem, and Dusty Johnson represent us in the U.S. House, and those are big shoes to fill. My family and I have received a lot of encouragement across the state to consider a bid for this open seat. I am strongly considering this opportunity and we will look at this as a family through prayer and serious conversations.'
Jackley announced his campaign last month, the same day Johnson publicly scheduled his announcement for governor.
Crabtree works as an economic development director for Heartland Energy in Madison, and served as state Senate majority leader during the 2023 and 2024 legislative sessions.
The Republican primary election is in June 2026, with the statewide general election to follow in November 2026

The dispute ignited further after the outlet published a report about an alleged, racy birthday cardthat Trump sent to convicted sex offender and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein in 2003. The letter was said to contain a drawing of a naked woman and a strange message about secrets, according to the WSJ. Trump, who is suing the WSJ over its report on the letter, has denied writing the letter. 'I never wrote a picture in my life. I don't draw pictures of women,' he told the Journal. 'It's not my language. It's not my words.' The president added: 'I'm gonna sue The Wall Street Journal just like I sued everyone else.' Trump further slammed the WSJ over their report in a separate Truth Social post, calling the article a 'false, malicious, and defamatory story.' Related... Trump increasing federal law enforcement in DC beginning Thursday night

It comes just days after a well-known former Department of Government Efficiency staffer was assaulted in DC. 'President Trump has directed an increased presence of federal law enforcement to protect innocent citizens. Starting tonight, there will be no safe harbor for violent criminals in D.C. President Trump is committed to making our Nation's capital safer for its residents, lawmakers, and visitors from all around the world,' White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. A White House official confirmed to CNN that the increase in law enforcement presence will include federal officers in 'marked units, and highly visible.' The increased presence will start at midnight and begins as a 7-day effort, with the option to extend, the official added. The effort will be led by US Park Police, with participation from US Capitol Police, FBI, DC Police, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and others. It 'will be focused on high-traffic tourist areas and other known hotspots,' according to the official. Despite Trump's repeated claims of increased crime in DC, 2025 crime numbers are lower than last year's, according to a preliminary year-to-date crime comparison from DC Police.
