Ringgit gains as trade tensions ease, US-China talks in focus

Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit opened higher on Tuesday against the US dollar and other major and regional currencies, supported by easing global trade tensions that lifted investor sentiment, an analyst said. At 8.01 am, the local note rose to 4.2140/2460 against the greenback from Monday's close of 4.2275/2345. However, Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the US Dollar Index (DXY) had strengthened, buoyed by optimism ahead of upcoming US-China trade talks. The DXY gained 1.03 per cent to 98.653 points, as officials from both countries were in discussions in Sweden on a possible trade truce, he told Bernama. 'At the same time, the two-day Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, which begins today, will be in the spotlight, with consensus expecting no change to the Fed Funds Rate. 'In addition, the US labour market will be closely watched, with July's Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report due on Friday. The market expects a softer print of 108,000, down from 147,000 in June,' he said. Mohd Afzanizam noted that the ringgit had weakened 0.21 per cent against the US dollar to RM4.2310 on Monday, amid ongoing trade negotiations between Malaysia and the United States. Malaysia is actively engaging the US to avert the impending 25 per cent tariffs set to take effect on Aug 1, seeking a rate below 20 per cent. Meanwhile, the extended US-China negotiations could signal a prolonged truce, suggesting the administration of US President Donald Trump remains sensitive to the tariffs' potential impact on the domestic economy. 'However, tariff shocks are likely to increase downside risks to global growth in the second half of 2025 and beyond, as higher costs of doing business in the US could dampen aggregate demand. 'The current term of the Fed chair ends in May next year, and it appears likely that Jerome Powell's successor will be more aligned with the US President's preference for lower interest rates as a policy stance,' he added. Mohd Afzanizam expects the ringgit to trade in a narrow range, likely between RM4.23 and RM4.24 today. At the opening, the ringgit traded higher against most major currencies. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.8383/8600 from 2.8497/8546 at Monday's close, appreciated versus the British pound to 5.6286/6714 from 5.6720/6814, and strengthened against the euro to 4.8861/9232 from 4.9331/9412 previously. The local note was also firmer against regional peers. It improved against the Indonesian rupiah to 257.4/259.6 from 258.3/258.9, gained versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2750/3004 from 3.2917/2974, strengthened against the Thai baht to 12.9626/13.0702 from 13.0511/0787, and inched up against the Philippine peso to 7.37/7.43 from 7.39/7.41 previously * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Meta selects Pimco, Blue Owl for US$29bil data centre
NEW YORK: Meta has selected investment management firm Pimco and alternative asset manager Blue Owl Capital for a US$29 billion financing deal related to its data centre projects in rural Louisiana, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday. Pimco is set to lead the US$26 billion debt component of the financing, while Blue Owl will contribute US$3 billion in equity, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. The debt portion is likely to be issued in the form of bonds, the report added. Last month, Meta chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg said the company would spend hundreds of billions of dollars to build several massive AI data centres for its superintelligence unit, intensifying his pursuit of a technology he has chased with a talent war for top engineers. The Facebook parent has been working with Morgan Stanley to raise funds, while Apollo Global Management and KKR were also in the running to lead the deal until the closing stage of negotiations, the Bloomberg report added. Meta, Pimco and Blue Owl declined to comment on the report. In June, the Financial Times reported that Meta was seeking to raise US$29 billion from private capital firms to build AI data centres in the US, adding that the company was debating how to structure the debt raising and also exploring options to raise even more capital.

Ringgit rises vs greenback on stronger odds of US rate cut
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened firmer against the US dollar on Friday, extending gains, after United States (US) economic data reinforced expectations of an imminent interest rate cut at the Federal Reserve's next policy meeting, an economist said. At 8 am, the local note rose to 4.2205/2405 against the greenback from Thursday's close of 4.2340/2385. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said US initial jobless claims increased more than expected to 226,000 last week, above market forecasts of 221,000. He said the increase marked a second consecutive weekly rise, supporting views that signs of labour market weakness are emerging, even though Federal Open Market Committee members believe more data is needed before their September meeting. "Notwithstanding that, the US Dollar Index fell 0.09 per cent to 98,084 points as the odds of a September rate cut are rising,' he told Bernama. On the domestic front, Mohd Afzanizam said the ringgit could remain supported after coming under selling pressure in yesterday's afternoon session. "Expect the ringgit against the US dollar to hover around RM4.22 to RM4.23 today,' he added. The ringgit was mostly lower against a basket of major and regional currencies in early trade. It eased against the Japanese yen to 2.8750/8888 from 2.8732/8765 on Thursday and weakened against the British pound to 5.6770/7039 from 5.6596/6656. It, however, strengthened against the euro to 4.9283/9516 from 4.9411/9463. Against regional peers, the local unit was firmer. It edged up against the Singapore dollar to 3.2906/3064 from 3.2973/3013 and appreciated vis-à-vis the Thai baht to 13.0653/1346 from 13.0954/1146. The ringgit also gained against the Philippine peso to 7.39/7.44 from 7.42/7.44 and firmed versus the Indonesian rupiah to 259.1/260.4 from 259.9/260.3. - Bernama

Weaker US Jobs Data Boosts Ringgit To RM4.22
The ringgit opened stronger against the US dollar on Friday, buoyed by rising expectations of a rate cut at the US Federal Reserve's upcoming policy meeting, following weaker-than-expected economic data. At 8 am, the local note appreciated to 4.2205/2405 against the greenback compared to Thursday's close of 4.2340/2385. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the US Dollar Index dipped 0.09% to 98,084 points as expectations of a rate cut in September gain traction. 'Expect the ringgit against the US dollar to hover around RM4.22 to RM4.23 today,' he added. He noted that initial US jobless claims rose to 226,000 last week, exceeding market forecasts of 221,000. This marked a second straight weekly increase, suggesting signs of weakness in the labour market, although the Federal Open Market Committee still requires more data before its September meeting. On the domestic front, he said the ringgit could find support after facing some selling pressure during the previous afternoon session. The local unit also strengthened against most regional peers in early trade. It appreciated against the Singapore dollar to 3.2906/3064 from 3.2973/3013, firmed versus the Thai baht to 13.0653/1346 from 13.0954/1146, and rose against the Philippine peso to 7.39/7.44 from 7.42/7.44. It did, however, strengthen against the euro to 4.9283/9516 from 4.9411/9463.
