
PlayStyles are killing EA FC 25 – but there's still a way to fix gameplay issues
PlayStyles have massively changed the gameplay in EA FC 25, but I'm starting to fear it's for the worse
PlayStyles have quickly become the most important factor when looking to use a player in EA FC 25, but it's got to a point where we rely on them too much, and something has to change.
During the FIFA era, pace was the most important stat in the game. In EA FC 24, the 'Lengthy Meta' controlled what players were best to use. And now, in EA FC 25, PlayStyles are the best way to decide what players to use, but unlike these past metas, it's got to a point where if your players don't have the correct PlayStyles, then they are almost useless in-game.
Introduced in EA FC 24, PlayStyles were added to the EA Sports FC series, with EA Sports claiming that PlayStyles go "beyond overall ratings" to make players special. In other words, they are power-ups that can make players better than stats suggest at certain parts of the game.
Since EA FC 24, we've seen a host of different metas come and go, and each one has revolved around a PlayStyle. From Anticipate being the best in the game in EA FC 24 to Power Shot in the early stages of EA FC 25, some have always been better than others, but right now, it's got to the point where it feels like stats don't matter – if you haven't got the PlayStyle, you're screwed.
PlayStyles were meant to elevate – now they dominate
Over the last few months, PlayStyles have become the most important part of EA FC 25, and it's proving to be incredibly frustrating. It doesn't matter if a striker has 95 or higher shooting; if they don't have the Finesse Shot or Low Driven Shot PlayStyle, they are almost unusable.
Now, it's got to the point where if I were to attempt a finesse shot or close-range shot with a player who doesn't have any of these PlayStyles, nine times out of 10, it's not going in.
A prime example of PlayStyles overriding stats I've experienced was using TOTS Tabitha Chawinga. She may have 99 pace and regular Quick Step and Rapid PlayStyles, but whenever she came up against a defender with Quick Step or Rapid PlayStyle Plus', regardless of their pace, she was always beaten to the ball.
But, despite her having just 86 passing, she was getting more assists than anyone in my team. Why? She has Incisive PlayStyle Plus. It's also bizarre that players without the Tiki Taka PlayStyle regularly struggle to complete five-yard, first-time passes, especially considering it's one of the simplest skills in football.
To really put this to the test, I jumped onto Clubs and created an 89-rated attacking midfielder with 93 passing and zero PlayStyles. I also created an 81-rated attacking midfielder, with this version having Incisive and Tiki Taka PlayStyle Plus', as well as Pinged Pass and Long Ball Plus PlayStyles.
I really struggled to create any chances with my 89-rated pro, despite his incredible passing stats. On the other hand, the 81-rated pro was racking up the assists, with the PlayStyles elevating him to outperform a player with much better passing stats.
But, there is potentially a way to fix this. I think for EA FC 26 to be a hit gameplay-wise, EA needs to scrap regular PlayStyles. It's gotten to a point where if a player doesn't have a regular PlayStyle, they cannot complete that command, so getting rid of regular PlayStyles would see stats start to matter again and allow all players to complete more basic mechanics.
But, I would still keep PlayStyle Plus' and revert to how PlayStyles were sold to us by EA when they were released. Simply use PlayStyles to enhance certain parts of the game rather than control it.

June 2 (Reuters) - Seattle Sounders players called for a bigger slice of the prize money for competing at the Club World Cup this month by wearing T-shirts emblazoned with "Cash Grab" and "Fair Share Now" ahead of a Major League Soccer match on Sunday. Seattle are set to earn at least $9.55 million for competing at the June 14 to July 13 tournament in the U.S., where the total prize money runs to $1 billion, but under the MLS collective bargaining agreement (CBA) the players' share is capped at $1 million per club. Seattle are one of three MLS teams that will compete in the expanded 32-team Club World Cup. Teams from North America are guaranteed almost $10 million just for participating and can earn more depending on their results. MLS did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment after Seattle players warmed up in T-shirts with the phrases "Club World Cup Ca$h Grab" and "Fair Share Now" written on them ahead of their 2-3 home defeat by Minnesota United. The MLS Players Association said in a statement on Sunday that players had "privately and respectfully invited the league to discuss bonus terms, yet MLS has failed to bring forward a reasonable proposal". It added that the league was "clinging to an out-of-date CBA provision and ignoring longstanding international standards on what players typically receive from FIFA prize money in global competitions. "It is the players who make the game possible. It is the players who are lifting MLS up on the global stage. They expect to be treated fairly and with respect." Seattle are in Group B at the Club World Cup along with Brazil's Botafogo, UEFA Champions League winners Paris St Germain and LaLiga's Atletico Madrid. They face Botafogo in their opening game on June 15.

Seattle Sounders protest Club World Cup bonus structure with MLSPA support
The Seattle Sounders wore shirts in the warm-up for the team's game against Minnesota United on Sunday reading 'Club World Ca$h Grab,' in protest over the manner in which bonuses from participating in the Club World Cup are being distributed. Afterwards, the MLS Players Association released a statement expressing solidarity with the Sounders players who, according to the statement 'demanded a fair share of Fifa Club World Cup prize money.' 'Fifa's new tournament piles on to players' ever-increasing workload without regard to their physical well-being,' the statement reads, before pointing out that Fifa will pay MLS teams large amounts (about $9.5m) to participate in the tournament. 'Despite this windfall, the league has refused to allocate a fair percentage of those funds to the players themselves.' In addition to the $9.5m for participating in the tournament, clubs earn more based on performance in the games, drawing from a Fifa prize pool of around $475m. However, the current collective bargaining agreement between the league and its players stipulates that players can only earn 50% of bonuses from outside tournament, capped at $1m for the entire team. In effect, that makes for an initial 90/10 split of prize money, with the ratio potentially getting worse if MLS teams advance in the competition. The MLSPA said in its statement that the players have sought to meet with MLS to make changes to the arrangement, but that the league has 'failed to bring forward a reasonable proposal.' Fifa itself does not have any rules governing how teams distribute prize money between front office, players, and associated parties. Club World Cup transfer window explained: Everything you need to know about how Premier League sides are affected
The new Club World Cup will get underway on June 14, kicking off a busy summer of football for the 32 teams involved. Taking place in the United States, the new-look tournament also means that an extra transfer window will be in place. Sanctioned at the behest of FIFA, the window will open early from June 1 to June 10. This is to allow teams competing in the tournament to add extra strength in depth, meaning we could see clubs act earlier than usual in the market. So, why exactly is there an extra transfer window, why is it split and when is the Club World Cup kicking off? Read on below for everything you need to know about the extra transfer window set to be in place this summer. Why is there an extra transfer window? There is typically one only one summer transfer window for European clubs, which usually opens at the end of June or beginning of July. However, this time around, FIFA has changed its usual rules to allow clubs competing in the newly-revamped Club World Cup to sign players for the tournament. A FIFA statement on the new window reads: 'Member associations of clubs participating in the competition shall have the possibility to establish an exceptional additional registration period from June 1-10, 2025. 'For the avoidance of doubt, no member association is obliged to establish such an exceptional additional registration period.' To avoid giving an unfair advantage to teams in the tournament, the extra transfer window is open to all clubs, not just those involved in the Club World Cup. Why is the transfer window split? After closing on June, the transfer window will remain shut for six days, until June 16, for Premier League teams. Page 267 of the 2024-25 season handbook states that the summer window must open 'at midnight on the date 12 weeks prior to the date on which it is to conclude'. League rules say the summer window must be a maximum of 12 weeks, while the winter window can be longer than four weeks. The early window in place for the Club World Cup is considered as an exceptional registration period, making it separate from the handbook's usual advice. When is the Club World Cup? The new-look Club World Cup will begin on Saturday June 14 and finish nearly a month later on Sunday July 13. The tournament will be held at various venues across the United States and involve the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and PSG. While the competition may be viewed as an after-thought by some fans, it comes with a lucrative award - as the winners of the tournament will receive up to £97million ($125million) from FIFA. A £774million ($1billion) will be shared between the 32 clubs - in addition to a £406million ($525million) participation fee shared based on sporting and commercial criteria, with a further £368million ($475million) shared based on sporting performance.
