Recording-breaking cards and Willie Mays' personal collection: What you'll find at The National

New York Times29-07-2025
Walking shoes and wallets. Don't attend the country's biggest and most well known sports card and collectibles show this week without them.
The 45th annual National Sports Collectors Convention, often referred to simply as 'The National,' will open its doors Wednesday at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois, anticipating at least 100,000 people in attendance for the five-day event.

The show will present more than 600 dealers for buying, selling and trading cards or memorabilia, including large displays from some of the hobby's most notable power players like Topps/Fanatics, Panini, Upper Deck, eBay, Goldin, Heritage, PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) and others.
Also nearly 200 current or former athletes and celebrities will hold autograph sessions and photo opportunities. Featured signers include current stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo (and all his brothers), Pete Crow-Armstrong, Kyle Tucker and Shota Imanaga to hall of famers like Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Ray Lewis, Lawrence Taylor, Mariano Rivera, Pedro Martinez, David Ortiz, Julius Erving, Allen Iverson and Patrick Ewing to eventual Hall of Famers like Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera and Adrian Peterson.
'It's pandemonium,' Mark Laird of Las Vegas based Paradise Card Breaks said. 'If you're brand new to The National, it's a little overwhelming, and you'll never see everything. Even if you're there for four days, you still won't see everything. Expect to be overwhelmed, expect to have crowds in front of booths. So have a game plan, know who you want to see and where you want to go.'
While, baseball, basketball, and football cards still command the lion's share of interest from sports card collects, some new categories are emerging in a big way that is likely to be reflected on the show floor this year. During the first half of this year, searches rose for WNBA cards (170 percent), WWE cards (more than 50 percent), and F1 cards (more than 50 percent) compared to the same time last year, according to eBay. Combine that with the massive rise in popularity of Pokemon cards that is commanding more and more space at sports card shows and this edition of The National could contain its most diverse array of collectibles yet.

Here's a snapshot of what some of the more prominent companies within the hobby will present at The National:
Heritage
Potentially the most expensive basketball card ever will be showcased by the auction house. The one-of-a-kind Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant 2007-08 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection Dual Logoman (the NBA logo patch from each of their game-worn jerseys) autographed patch card will be on display and is currently up for auction, ending in late August. The price currently stands at $3.4 million with the buyer's premium, meaning it will be the most expensive basketball card publicly sold. The all-time record for any basketball card sale is currently held by a one-of-one Stephen Curry 2009 Panini National Treasures Logoman autographed patch card that sold for $5.9 million in a private sale. That record seems likely to fall too.

eBay
The online marketplace will feature 'The Hunt,' where collectors can search for 50 cards (each card ranging from $100-$500) hidden across the convention floor. Each day of the convention, eBay will reveal 10 new cards up for grabs. Other activities within the eBay booth include the 'Grade Your Grail' challenge to see how well you can grade a trading card's condition and the chance to shoot baskets to win eBay Collector Packs or unlock access to the 'search bar' to scour for cards you're chasing.
The eBay Live stage will feature former athletes and celebrities like Dwight Howard and Rob Gronkowski to join the booth for sports card breaks with top sellers. There will also be panels with notable sports figures to discuss sports and the hobby.
Goldin
The auction house will showcase some of the most iconic trading cards and memorabilia in the hobby at both their booth and the eBay booth. Most notably, Goldin will highlight the Caitlin Clark Immaculate one-of-a-kind autographed Logowoman patch card inscribed 'ROY 24' from the 2024 Panini WNBA Rookie Royalty set. (A similar card from the set sold recently for more than $600,000, smashing the all-time record for a sale of a women's sports card.)

Willie Mays' personal collection will be on display as the items will be auctioned off in late September with the proceeds going to education, training and health services for youth through the Say Hey! Foundation. The items will include:
Panini
The card company will offer a variety of products and activities catered toward children and teenage card collectors. Panini will host a series of 'Kids Case Breaks,' as well as 'Kids Crates' packs. The eight box breaks spread across three days will include some of the company's recognizable products like Contenders Football and Mosaic Basketball.

'Collecting 101' will offer a tutorial on the basics of card collecting. A wrapper redemption will be offered where collectors can bring eligible sealed Topps boxes in exchange for exclusive Topps National silver packs.
Upper Deck
The card company will provide its own wrapper redemption program. Attendees can buy Upper Deck products from select hobby shops at the show and receive a ticket to redeem at the booth for various prizes depending on the product purchased. The company will showcase its recently launched rookie patch autograph authentication system that debuted with '23-'24 The Cup. Plus, Dallas Mavericks center Dereck Lively II will hold a Saturday autograph session.

Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo linked to blockbuster signing with Lakers

Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo linked to blockbuster signing with Lakers originally appeared on The Sporting News There still may be a question mark next to LeBron James' name in terms of what his future plans are, whether that be retirement or a different team. But one thing is for sure, after stealing Luka Doncic away from the Dallas Mavericks in the trade of the century this past February, the Lakers are holding on to the Slovenian star for years to come. And come 2027, another superstar could be on his way to donning the legendary purple and yellow Lakers jersey. According to Sam Quinn of CBS Sports, that superstar could be Milwaukee Bucks' star big man Giannis Antetokounmpo, a duo (or potential trio) that would very much spell danger for the opposition. 'For the time being, both Nikola Jokić and Giannis Antetokounmpo are set to become free agents in 2027,' Quinn wrote. 'They are banking on someone, whether it's Antetokounmpo, Jokić or someone we aren't expecting, to become unhappy somewhere else. The cap space is their leverage, their way of saying 'you can give us your star or we can take him.'' Giannis, along with another superstar in Denver's Nikola Jokic, are set for player options in 2027, and while the "Greek Freak" has teased a departure from the team throughout the offseason, it seems he will be staying with the team for the 2025-26 season. As for two years from now? Only time will tell. Antetokounmpo will have played through 15 NBA seasons, but if he's still at as high of a level then as he is now, having both him and Doncic in Los Angeles would be a lethal tandem for anyone that stands in the team's way.

Can the Warriors add Giannis and still keep Kuminga?

Yahoo Sports senior NBA analyst Kevin O'Connor and NBC Sports NBA Insider Grant Liffmann discuss whether or not the Golden State Warriors will add Giannis Antetokounmpo to the roster and question Jonathan Kuminga's future with the team. Hear the full conversation on 'The Kevin O'Connor Show' and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript The Warriors haven't made a move yet. They're just waiting. Are they one of the teams waiting for Giannis? As Shams kind of alluded to over at ESPN. What's the deal with Golden State right now? Grant? The Warriors will always be big fish hunting. As long as they have Steph Curry, they're gonna big fish hunt. If when Steph Curry is gone, they're gonna big fish hunt because they need to replace Steph Curry, which is impossible because Steph Curry is a unicorn. But like, the point is, if Giannis, sure, it would be crazy if they weren't trying for him, right? Can you imagine putting Giannis with Steph? And so going for big fish, 100%. So, I would just say that like for them with the Kaminga situation and everything, while Steph Curry is, I mean, just an absolute legend, one of the greatest players of all time, it is difficult to play with him sometimes, not because he's difficult. But his movement is so unique out there. So with Jonathan Kaminga in these situations, it should, it can be difficult to adapt to a Steph Curry. If you don't adapt on the fly, and for these young players, that's why you see so many maybe not necessarily work out with the Warriors sometimes and they have to go for veterans because they understand the game has already slowed down, they have to understand that movement a little bit more, but again, playing with Steph Curry is such a unique experience for these players, you need the right fits for that. It's clear to me that if the Warriors do indeed keep Jonathan Kaminga, they want to be able to trade Jonathan Kaminga. It's one of those random situations where leverage is left to all sides, because in one world, you'd assume a Jonathan Kaminga a couple of years ago would have gone a huge contract this year from a team, but no team has cap space. Only one team had cap space enough to give him the money he wanted, right? So now you're talking sign and trades, and sign and trades are not the same anymore because now most teams are limited in what you can do with a sign and trade. Kaminga could try to delay a year and get the qualifying offer because there's going to be much more cap space the following year. But I'm sure in his mind it's like, well, what if I don't play well or don't mesh well again or something happens? And so, and the Warriors meantime are trying to win, and they're like, hey, we, if you are all in. We can try to win with you for now, but we do recognize that this is not the perfect fit. It's just like a whole interesting situation where just no one has leverage. Close

Cowboys finish hoops schedule

Finally, the Cowboys basketball schedule for the upcoming season is completed. A day after learning their Southland Conference schedule, McNeese State finished its 31-game regular season slate with a game at Rhode Island on December 3. The game will be the first meeting between the two teams. 'I knew it would be tough to get those buy games with the success the program has had over the last couple of years,' said Bill Armstrong, who takes over the Cowboys this season. 'It took a lot of work, but I like the schedule overall for us. It should help get us ready for the league.' The Cowboys will get somewhere between $50,000 and $60,000 to make the trip to Kingston, RI, just two days after they open Southland Conference play at Incarnate Word. 'I don't like playing nonconference games after we open conference play at all,' said Armstrong. 'It is just the way things turned out when the league expanded the conference schedule to 22 games.' The SLC released its schedule on Wednesday. McNeese will play two home games following the trip to Rhode Island against Northwestern State (Dec. 5) and East Texas A&M (Dec. 12) before hitting the road to Houston Christian on Dec. 15. They then head to Michigan on December 29 to close out 2025 and pick up somewhere around $90,000 to play the Wolverines. Two years ago, the Cowboys traveled to Michigan and announced their presence as an up-and-coming program with an 87-76 win, their first and only victory in 11 tries against a Big Ten school. Both teams have gone through significant changes in their roster since. As for the Rams, they finished last season 18-13, missing the NCAA Tournament by one game. The Rams lost to Fordham 88-71 for the Atlantic 10 championship. The Rams did not receive a bid to any postseason tournament. The game will be played in Kingston, RI, inside the 8,000-seat Ryan Center on the school's campus. That will give McNeese games on all three coasts as they will travel to Santa Clara to finish up a home-and-home series started last season in Lake Charles. The Cowboys will be looking for revenge in that game, as Santa Clara is the only team to beat McNeese on their home floor the last two years. They will also play at Corpus Christi, Texas, on the Gulf Coast, along with Rhode Island. The Rams will also be the second A-10 opponent on McNeese's schedule. They will take on George Washington, considered by some to be the favorite to win the Atlantic 10, to open their 3-game trip to the Cayman Islands on Sunday, November 23. They will finish up the Cayman Islands Classic with games against Murray State and Middle Tennessee the following two days. 'That is a very good tournament that will test us,' said Armstrong. 'We will also get some time together as a team, which helps build chemistry.' Getting the schedule finished was once again a grind, as teams have shied away from playing McNeese since the school has been winning. The Cowboys are 58-11 over the last two seasons, including winning for the first time in the NCAA Tournament in March. The Cowboys entered this week with two games to fill, but on Monday, it was learned they will play at Michigan for the second time in three years on December 29. McNeese will play just three home games outside the conference this season, opening with Champion Christian on Monday, November 3. They will also host the College of Biblical Studies (Nov. 10) and Louisiana-Lafayette (Nov. 14). 'It will be difficult playing all but three of our nonconference games away from home, but it is something we hope to use to our advantage,' said Armstrong. 'It should get us ready for the conference schedule. 'We have raised the bar here with our schedule in hopes of helping our seeding if we get to the NCAA Tournament again. That is the standard.' The last two years, McNeese has gone 1-2 in the NCAA, both times entering as a 12 seed. The Cowboys lost to Gonzaga in 2024 in the first round, but beat Clemson in the opener last before Purdue knocked them out.
