Here's what Kamala Harris did to shut out negativity post 2024 election loss against Trump
Instead of diving back into the news cycle, she turned to cooking shows for escape.
Harris on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
Kamala Harris appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for her first televised interview since the election loss. Colbert commented, 'First of all, you look rested.' Harris joked that she was, and after asking about Colbert himself, she discussed how she managed the aftermath of her defeat.
When asked, 'How long before you turned on the news again?'
Harris replied: 'Months, Months, I, you know, I'm just not into self‑mutilation, and I just, I, yeah, lots of cooking shows.'
She added that 'The Kitchen', a cooking show where hosts prepare simple dinners, play trivia, and share meal tips, is 'one of my favorites.'
Cooking as comfort and control
For Kamala Harris, the kitchen isn't just a place for food, it's where she regains her sense of self. In the chaos that followed her 2024 election defeat, cooking offered her something rare: control.
Back when she was crisscrossing the country as a senator, Harris once said, 'Everything else can be crazy, I can be on six planes in one week, and what makes me feel normal is making Sunday‑night family dinner.'

That same instinct led her back to the stove after the loss, when she could barely bring herself to watch the news. Instead of spiraling, she turned to flavors, textures, and recipes.
Her love for cooking traces back to her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, who told her early on, 'Kamala, you clearly like to eat good food. You better learn how to cook.' It stuck. Over the years, Harris built up a collection of cookbooks, favorites include Marcella Hazan and Alice Waters, and has even talked about writing one of her own someday.
During the campaign trail, that passion showed up online. Her short series 'Cooking With Kamala' gave viewers a peek into her unpolished, everyday kitchen self. She chopped onions with practiced ease, cracked eggs one‑handed, and even swapped spice jar stories with Mindy Kaling while making masala dosa.
From YouTube to the home kitchen
During her 2020 campaign, Harris hosted a short YouTube series called 'Cooking With Kamala.' She confidently demonstrated cooking skills, like cracking an egg one-handed and slicing onions, earning praise even from chef Tom Colicchio. In one viral video, she and actress Mindy Kaling prepared masala dosa and discovered that both grew up storing spices in Taster's Choice jars.
Her home kitchen reflects her passion: enamel skillets, a gas stove, and a crock full of cooking tools, signs of someone who cooks often and joyfully.

Forgiveness for some, debt for the rest: Trump limits student loan relief except for ICE agents
Trump limits student load relief except for ICE agents In Donald Trump's America, student loan forgiveness isn't about public service — it's about political service. As reported by The Intercept , while the administration moves to strip debt relief from teachers, legal advocates, and nonprofit workers, it's dangling a $50,000 sign-on bonus and student loan forgiveness in front of newly recruited ICE agents. This double standard isn't just blatant: It's strategic. According to The Intercept , Trump's Department of Education is rewriting the rules of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program to exclude so-called 'activist' nonprofits, including organisations that provide legal aid to undocumented immigrants or gender-affirming care to transgender youth. Meanwhile, the same administration is fast-tracking debt relief for ICE, an agency already mired in controversy. Rewriting PSLF: Who deserves forgiveness now? The Public Service Loan Forgiveness program was created in 2007 to offer debt relief to those who dedicate their careers to public service — from nonprofit legal aid to public school teaching. But under Trump's July executive order titled 'Restoring Public Service Loan Forgiveness,' that mission is being twisted to serve ideological ends. The Intercept reports that under the new rules, any nonprofit deemed to serve a 'substantial illegal purpose' could be excluded. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like M3M Great Freedom Sale – The Biggest Property Sale in India M3M India Book Now Undo It's a vague phrase, but it's being applied with alarming precision — especially to groups the administration considers political enemies. Think immigrant rights organisations. Think transgender health providers. Think legal advocates for marginalised groups. If your work helps the vulnerable, you could soon be disqualified. If your work enforces deportations? You're in line for a check. The ICE sweetener: $50K + loan relief While PSLF is being gutted, ICE is being rewarded. The Intercept revealed that the Department of Homeland Security has launched a new recruitment package for Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, including: Student loan repayment of up to $10,000 annually A $50,000 signing bonus Potential loan forgiveness through existing federal mechanisms This offer comes as part of DHS's newly expanded $170 billion budget — a spending boost that seems to prioritise border enforcement over broader public service support. The optics? A government that cuts support for public defenders and teachers while showering ICE agents with bonuses and bailouts. Critics slam the hypocrisy Experts in education and debt relief have called out the hypocrisy with striking clarity. 'This just shows the lengths that the Trump administration will go to to weaponise Public Service Loan Forgiveness and debt more broadly to achieve their fascist objectives,' The Intercept quoted Persis Yu, deputy executive director at the Student Borrower Protection Center. Sara Partridge, of the Center for American Progress, said the changes reflect 'a major abuse of power,' and warned that lawsuits are likely. But damage may already be done. 'It is hypocritical to provide additional funding for debt relief for certain categories of workers while seeking to deny it to everyday Americans,' Partridge told The Intercept . 'To me, it's outrageous, and it shows where the priority of this administration is.' Wil Del Pilar, senior vice president at EdTrust, summed it up sharply: 'The Department of Education is putting other people's cancellations on hold, while fast-tracking this other group of folks who haven't done anything to warrant cancellation.' The fall of SAVE and the rise of uncertainty Beyond PSLF, the Trump administration is also dismantling the SAVE Plan, a Biden-era income-based repayment system designed to reduce the burden on working and middle-class borrowers. According to The Intercept , the SAVE Plan will be fully eliminated by July 1, 2028 under the 'Big, Beautiful Bill' signed by Trump. In its place: a stingier repayment scheme, with higher monthly costs and fewer pathways to relief. Interest has already resumed on SAVE Plan loans, affecting nearly 8 million borrowers. Families sending children to medical school or graduate programs will face new caps on federal loans — pushing many toward expensive private lenders. 'It's such a mess,' borrower Sam Alig told The Intercept . 'Every single time I call, they tell me something else. It's $400 [per month] now. Six months from now, it could be $800, I have no idea.' Debt as discipline: A history of suppression Weaponising student debt isn't a Trump invention. As The Intercept points out, this playbook dates back to the Reagan era, when then-Governor Reagan slashed funding for California's public universities, arguing that students had become too radical. His education adviser, Roger A. Freeman, put it bluntly: 'We are in danger of producing an educated proletariat. That's dynamite!' In 2025, that same fear is back, only now it's backed by executive orders, budget riders, and loan repayment schedules. Debt isn't just financial pressure. It's political leverage. Financial aid with strings attached For Indian students pursuing US education, especially in law, social work, or public health, this shift in loan policy sends a chilling message. Careers in advocacy or community service may now come with greater financial risk. If your work supports the administration's agenda, you're protected. If your work questions it, or uplifts vulnerable groups, you may be penalised. In a world where education drives mobility, leadership, and change, this is a story that doesn't stop at the US border. As The Intercept 's reporting makes clear, the Trump administration is turning the US financial aid system into a loyalty test. The PSLF program, once a promise to public servants, is now a tool to elevate political allies and exclude ideological adversaries. This isn't just about loan forgiveness. It's about who gets to dream and who gets punished for trying. TOI Education is on WhatsApp now. Follow us here . Ready to navigate global policies? Secure your overseas future. Govt reserves 84.4% of teaching posts for locals
Patna: The state cabinet on Tuesday approved a govt proposal to reserve 84.4% of schoolteacher posts for candidates who are residents of the state. These appointments will be made through the upcoming teachers' recruitment examination (TRE)-4 and TRE-5, scheduled for 2025 and 2026, respectively, additional chief secretary (ACS) of the cabinet secretariat department, S Siddharth, said following the cabinet meeting. The decision has been made possible through an amendment to the existing 2023 rules, which have now been replaced by the Bihar State School Teacher (Appointment, Transfer, Disciplinary Proceedings and Service Conditions) (Amendment) Rules, 2025. The cabinet approved the amended rules on Tuesday and the same day, the education department issued a formal notification signed by ACS Siddharth. The new rules will come into effect from the date of their publication in the official gazette. "The proposal regarding giving preference to the native residents of the state in teachers' recruitment examinations was cleared by the cabinet on Tuesday," Siddharth said. The amendment follows CM Nitish Kumar's announcement on Monday that his govt would give preference to domiciles of Bihar in state recruitment. "Directions have been given to the education department to make necessary amendments in the rules to give priority to residents (domiciles) of Bihar in the appointment of teachers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo This will be implemented from the TRE-4," Nitish had posted on a social media platform. In line with the revised rules and in accordance with mandatory norms, 50% of posts will be allocated as per the reservation policy for scheduled castes (SC), scheduled tribes (ST), backward castes (BC) and extremely backward castes (EBC). An additional 10% will be reserved for candidates from economically weaker sections (EWS) from general category, bringing the total reserved category quota to 60%. The remaining 40% of posts fall under the unreserved category. Of these, out of the total number of seats, 35% will be allocated to women teacher aspirants from Bihar and 40% will be set aside for candidates who are also Bihar residents and have passed both Matriculation and Intermediate examinations within the state. "Overall, 84.4% of seats will be filled by residents of Bihar. Only 15.6% of the total unreserved seats will be filled by candidates who are either from outside Bihar or from within Bihar but don't qualify under the new domicile-based preferences," Siddharth said. He added, "To go by the trends, only 2% of seats are filled by candidates who are not from Bihar. Hence, 98% of the seats would be finally filled by candidates who are residents of Bihar."
