DOJ asks judge to unseal Epstein, Maxwell grand jury testimony

The Hill2 days ago
The Justice Department (DOJ) asked a federal court on Friday to unseal the grand jury transcripts in the Jeffrey Epstein case.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche filed two different, almost identical, motions to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York to release the transcripts of the man convicted of sex-trafficking minors and his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell.
The motions state that even though the DOJ and FBI remain confident about the July memo, which indicated there was no evidence of a 'client' list and confirmed that Epstein died by suicide, the court should unseal the testimonies out of 'public interest.'
The move comes amid furor over the release of the so-called Epstein files, particularly among some of Trump's staunchest supports.
The DOJ will work to remove the names of potential victims and 'other personal identifying information' before the transcript is released, the motions state. It is rare for a grand jury transcript to be released due to sensitive information; however, it can be done if there is enough public demand.
There is still no information on how long it will take the court to unseal the files. The DOJ has not immediately responded to requests for comment.
On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal released a bombshell repor t about a letter President Trump reportedly sent to Epstein for his 50th birthday. The letter includes a drawn picture of a naked woman and the words 'Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret.'
Trump refuted the allegations and is now suing the reporters and the paper's owner Rupert Murdoch.
Friday's motion comes after the president directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to release the 'pertinent grand jury testimony', in an attempt to calm criticism about the administration's handling of the case.
'Based on the ridiculous amount of publicity given to Jeffrey Epstein, I have asked Attorney General Pam Bondi to produce any and all pertinent Grand Jury testimony, subject to Court approval. This SCAM, perpetuated by the Democrats, should end, right now!,' Trump posted on Truth Social.
The administration in recent weeks has faced increased pressure from Republicans and Democrats alike to share more information about the case, prompting frustration from the president.
'I have had more success in 6 months than perhaps any President in our Country's history, and all these people want to talk about, with strong prodding by the Fake News and the success starved Dems, is the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax,' Trump posted on Truth Social.
'Let these weaklings continue forward and do the Democrats' work, don't even think about talking of our incredible and unprecedented success, because I don't want their support anymore!'

DOJ Probing for Collusion in CLO Market During Libor Transition

(Bloomberg) -- The US Justice Department is conducting a criminal antitrust investigation into whether some investors in collateralized loan obligations colluded to bolster their positions as markets transitioned away from the scandal-plagued London interbank offer rate in early 2023, according to people familiar with the matter. Why the Federal Reserve's Building Renovation Costs $2.5 Billion The Dutch Intersection Is Coming to Save Your Life Milan Corruption Probe Casts Shadow Over Property Boom Mumbai Facelift Is Inspired by 200-Year-Old New York Blueprint How San Jose's Mayor Is Working to Build an AI Capital Antitrust prosecutors in New York have sent subpoenas to financial firms as they seek to determine whether investors with an equity stake in the $1.3 trillion CLO market illegally coordinated as the underlying buyout debt was repriced, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing the confidential probe. The investigation was opened about a year-and-a-half ago, the people said. A spokesperson for the Justice Department declined to comment. In the last few months of 2022 and early 2023 — shortly before the final phaseout of Libor — a flurry of companies in the leveraged loan market rushed to switch the benchmarks on their debt. Often, they tried to exclude an adjustment that was meant to compensate investors for the fact that the Secured Overnight Financing Rate — the debt's new benchmark — consistently printed below Libor. CLO managers, who repackage leveraged loans into bonds of varying risk and size, saw how some companies were about to reap benefits during that transition if that additional spread wasn't added, as it lowered the interest the companies paid. The most junior holders of the bonds they issued, also known as equity, stood to lose millions as they get paid last after every other investor in the bond has received their payments. Communications between CLO equity holders near the transition deadline is part of what is being investigated by prosecutors, said the people familiar with the matter. CLO equity investors were particularly exposed during the transition because their returns depend on the excess cash flows from underlying loans after higher-ranking CLO debt holders have been paid, and because of the significant leverage built into the structures. Smaller interest payments mean there's less left over for them to pocket. Antitrust law bars competitors from colluding for economic gain. Because each CLO investor is a separate entity, it could potentially be illegal for them to agree with each other on the financial terms for an investment. In criminal collusion or price-fixing cases, prosecutors must show evidence of an agreement, but don't need to provide proof of economic harm, potentially giving them an advantage if a case goes to trial. Still, if the government ultimately brings charges, it would need to convince a jury the actions came from collusion instead of firms reaching the same decision independently. Sean Hannity urges others to move to ‘Free State of Florida' if Mamdani is elected

Fox News host Sean Hannity has claimed there will be a 'mass exodus' out of the state of New York if Democrat Zohran Mamdani is elected as the city's mayor in November—warning that many companies will choose to relocate to Florida in order to avoid 'burdensome regulations and high taxes.' Hannity, 63, who himself moved to the Sunshine State from New York in January, made the claims during an appearance on his fiancée Ainsley Earhardt's show, 'Fox & Friends,' during which he discussed the Democratic party's plummeting approval rating. According to a new poll by Quinnipiac University, 72% of voters disapprove of the Democrats in Congress, while just 19% gave the party a positive rating. However, the numbers were not much better for congressional Republicans, who received a 62% disapproval rating from voters. 5 Fox News host Sean Hannity has claimed there will be a 'mass exodus' out of the state of New York if Democrat Zohran Mamdani is elected as the city's mayor in November on 'Fox & Friends.' Fox News While sharing his views on the rating—which he noted is at an all-time low—Hannity suggested that it may be related to the political party's choice of spokespeople, mocking the likes of Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and the other members of a group known as 'the squad,' before taking aim at Mamdani. Mamdani, 33, who won the Democratic mayoral primary in June, is now being largely viewed as one of the leading new voices of his political party—however, Hannity claimed that his policies will likely lead to many New York residents fleeing the state, suggesting that his fellow Fox News hosts may want to get ahead of the trend by joining him in Florida. 'If they want to go with Mamdani as the Mayor of New York City, I invite you all to come and broadcast your show as I do, originate your show in the free state of Florida,' he said. 'Because there is going to be a mass exodus out of the state of New York the likes of which we have never seen.' 5 Mamdani won the Democratic mayoral primary in June. Getty Images Addressing the impact on New York City's economy, the Fox News host went on to warn that many businesses have already made the decision to set up bases in Florida—and will likely turn even more attention to the Southern state in the event of a Mamdani victory in November's mayoral election. 'What a lot of people don't know—and it's a pretty fascinating phenomenon—is that Wall Street South is already here,' he added. 'All these companies, they don't just have offices in Southern Florida, no, they've got half their companies down here now. 'The reason is because of burdensome regulation, high taxes, they've chased them out. And they're just going to pick up and leave completely now.' 5 'Wall Street South is already here,' Hannity said about companies moving from New York to Florida. 'All these companies, they don't just have offices in Southern Florida, no, they've got half their companies down here now.' TTstudio – When asked about Mamdani's fellow mayoral candidates, Hannity urged Fox News viewers not to count out Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, claiming that there may still be a 'lane' for him in the election, particularly given that independent runner Andrew Cuomo is closing in on Mamdani in the polls. 'So, Mamdani's numbers have been going down. It looked like it might have been a slam dunk in the beginning—I'm not so sure,' he said, before calling attention to the fact that there are three other left-leaning politicians in the race: Cuomo, Eric Adams, and Jim Walden, which may prove to be of benefit to Sliwa. 5 'Mamdani's numbers have been going down. It looked like it might have been a slam dunk in the beginning—I'm not so sure,' Hannity said. Paul Martinka 'Cuomo is definitely leading in terms of coming into second place. But you've got three leftists on the ticket besides Mamdani and, sorry, Eric Adams is not polling particularly well, [although] I know there's going to be a lot of money thrown in his direction,' Hannity said. 'But if all three of them stay in the race and Mamdani stays in the race, I do believe—it's an outside shot—but it does create a lane for Curtis Sliwa, who has been a longtime friend of mine. He really is Mr. New York, he loves New York City.' Hannity went on to describe Sliwa as a 'Giuliani 2.0,' referring to Rudy Giuliani, Donald Trump's disgraced former attorney who served as Mayor between 1994 and 2001. Earhardt and Hannity went on to discuss Mamdani's 'socialist, Marxist' policies, with the latter describing them as 'madness' and 'insanity.' Though Hannity believes that a Mamdani victory in the election would prompt a 'mass exodus' from New York, real estate experts have insisted that it's too early to begin making those kind of predictions—particularly when it comes to the city's wealthiest residents. 5 Hannity discussed Mamdani's 'socialist, Marxist' policies, describing them as 'madness' and 'insanity.' Getty Images Luxury real estate broker Donna Olshan told earlier this month that, while she has received some 'nervous calls' from her clients, she believes it's highly unlikely that long-term residents will simply up and leave New York and move elsewhere. 'It's way too early to see how this will affect the luxury market in Manhattan,' Olshan said earlier this month. 'Have I gotten nervous calls? Yes, but at the end of the day, most people are not going to pick up roots and move somewhere else because they don't like the mayor and are afraid of the direction the city will go in.' Still, Mamdani's policies are already influencing the New York City real estate market, with Olshan revealing that right after the primary, a buyer submitted a low offer on an apartment she was representing—in an attempt to secure a 'Mamadani discount.' 'I thought this was ironic,' Olshan adds. 'They were perfectly happy to live in New York City—even with Mamdani—if they could get a discount on an apartment.' And while Manhattan residents may have previously looked to places like Palm Beach as an alternative home base, figures show that these trends have changed. Instead, city dwellers who want to leave the Big Apple are now seeking alternative residences in places much closer to home, like Suffolk and Nassau. 'It appears that more Manhattan residents are interested in staying within the New York City metro, but outside the city proper,' senior economist Joel Berner said.

Klobuchar defends Democrats for inaction on Epstein under Biden

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) defended Democrats for jumping on Republican calls for the federal government to release files on convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, even though her party largely remained mum on the issue while former President Biden was in office. In an interview on CNN's 'State of the Union' with Jake Tapper, the Minnesota Democrat rejected President Trump's efforts to blame Democrats for inaction. 'The president blaming Democrats for this disaster, Jake, is like that CEO that got caught on camera blaming Coldplay,' Klobuchar said, referring to the latest so-called 'kiss cam' scandal. 'This is his making. He was president when Epstein got indicted for these charges and went to prison. He was president when Epstein committed suicide. And then there was another case, as you know, that continued during the Biden administration, but he was president back then, so all of us would believe they know what's in these documents. They know what's there. They've been claiming forever that they should be released,' she continued. 'It is a Trump administration that has made this promise that they're going to release it,' Klobuchar added, noting Attorney General Pam Bondi released binders described as the 'first phase' of the declassification of Epstein documents. Klobuchar emphasized that Democrats have not been as focused on the issue as Republicans have been. 'Blaming Democrats for this, to me, I'm sorry. This is- the people that have been fomenting this are right-wing influencers, members of Congress,' she said. 'People have a reason that they want to know what's in there. They believe the President when he said there's stuff in there that people should see. Wall Street Journal. These are not bastions of liberalism or wild progressives that have come out and said the public has a right to know what is in these documents,' she continued. Trump, in a Truth Social post on Friday, asked why the Democrats did not release the files linked to the disgraced financier when they controlled the Senate and White House. 'If there was a 'smoking gun' on Epstein, why didn't the Dems, who controlled the 'files' for four years, and had [former Attorney General Merrick] Garland and [ex-prosecutor Maureen] Comey in charge, use it,' Trump wrote on Truth Social. He added, 'BECAUSE THEY HAD NOTHING!!!' Trump earlier directed Bondi to release relevant grand jury testimony in Epstein's case. The directive, which has garnered mixed reactions, followed pressure from some of Trump's supporters and Democrats alike for the White House to disclose more information about its probe of the case.
