Spanish Motorcyclist dies in crash during practice at Magny-Cours Circuit in France
Spanish motorcycle racer Borja Gómez, the leader of the European Superstock Championship, has died at the age of 20 following a tragic crash during practice at the Magny-Cours circuit in France.
The Honda Laglisse team confirmed the death of their rider, who was participating in the opening practice session of the 'Stock 600' class during the third round of the European Motorcycle Championship on his Honda bike, according to Anadolu Agency.
'It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Borja Gómez at Magny-Cours Circuit following a serious crash during the first free practice of the European Superstock 600 Championship,' the team said in a statement.
'In addition to his exceptional talent, we will remember Borja as a wonderful person—his kindness and smile will remain with us forever. He will always be in our hearts,' the statement added.
According to media reports, Gómez lost control of his bike at one of the circuit's turns, leading to a multi-rider crash. The rider behind him was unable to avoid him and struck him, resulting in his immediate death at the scene.
Gómez, who hailed from San Javier, was leading the European Championship standings after finishing second in the season-opening race in Estoril and winning the latest race in Jerez in early June.
The tragic accident occurred at a time when Gómez was performing impressively, topping both the European 'Stock' and JuniorGP 'Stock 600' championships (formerly known as the Spanish Motorcycle Championship), a key stepping-stone to MotoGP.
