James Cook sits out Bills' practice Sunday, calls it "business"
On Sunday, he rested.
Cook did not participate in practice for the first time during camp, watching from the side in street clothes and spending time on an exercise bicycle.
'Oh, nothing,' Cook said, via Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN. 'Business.'
Cook also answered 'business' when asked whether he was holding in and about whether he planned to practice Monday. The Bills had no comment on Cook's non-participation, per Getzenberg, and Cook was not included in coach Sean McDermott's list of injured players sitting out Sunday's session.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that the sides have engaged in talks and are 'not . . . that far apart.'
Cook wants to be paid like one of the top running backs in the league after making $4.257 million for his first three seasons. He is due to make $5.271 million in base salary this season in the final year of his rookie deal.
Cook, a second-round pick in 2022, has rushed for 2,638 yards and 20 touchdowns in his career. The two-time Pro Bowler also has caught 97 passes for 883 yards with seven touchdowns.
The Bills extended the contracts of cornerback Christian Benford, defensive end Greg Rousseau, linebacker Terrel Bernard and wide receiver Khalil Shakir this offseason. Cook insinuated on social media early in the offseason that he was looking for $15 million a season.
Saquon Barkley ($20.6 million per season), Christian McCaffrey ($19 million) and Derrick Henry ($15 million) are the only running backs making at least that much per season.

Rams' Matthew Stafford Reportedly Week-to-Week With 'Aggravated Disk' in Back
Matthew Stafford's back issue has been a lingering matter for the Los Angeles Rams, and now there's more clarity on the matter. Stafford is nursing an aggravated disk in his back and has received an epidural to assist him with the issue, NFL Network reported on Wednesday morning. The Rams consider Stafford's status as "week-to-week" with guarded optimism that he'll be ready for Week 1 of the regular season. Stafford has been present at the Rams' facility but has not been taking part in team drills due to the injury. The 37-year-old Stafford is entering his fifth season with the Rams, who signed the quarterback to a revised two-year, $84 million deal in February. Last season, the two-time Pro Bowler totaled 3,762 passing yards, 20 passing touchdowns, eight interceptions and a 93.7 passer rating, while completing 65.8% of his passes. Los Angeles is coming off a 10-7 campaign that saw it win the NFC West and later advance to the NFC divisional round. On the injury front, Stafford was limited to nine games in 2022 due to a spinal cord contusion and head injury. As for the rest of their quarterback room, the Rams have Jimmy Garoppolo, Stetson Bennett and Dresser Winn. The Rams open their 2025 preseason on Saturday at home against the Dallas Cowboys and open the regular season at home against the Houston Texans on Sept. 7. Cowboys' Jerry Jones not confident Micah Parsons will play Week 1 after trade request
Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said he does not know if star pass rusher Micah Parsons will play in Week 1. The Cowboys begin their season Sept. 4 against the division rival and defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. This week, Jones was asked if he was confident Parsons would be a part of that lineup. "No, absolutely not," Jones told reporters after the team's joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams Tuesday. "A big part of that is his decision. How would I know that? No, but I'm urgent." Jones said that he has not spoken to Parsons since the star made a trade request, but Jones said that stays "urgent." Jones has remained steadfast in his praise of Parsons after his trade request. "I think the world of Micah," Jones said. "Like I've said, I've had social time with Micah, which isn't always the case, but I have. He's one of the brightest people I've ever been around, and he's very, very talented. Now, how we ultimately (mix) him in with our future is a challenge, and I'm built for it, he's built for it." Parsons has still attended practice and attended meetings while the contract talks continue to stall. The four-time Pro Bowler announced his trade request on social media Friday, and Parsons cited "radio silence" from the Cowboys regarding a contract extension in both this and last offseason. In Parsons' post to social media, he said he did everything he could to show he wanted to stay with the Cowboys. "Yes I wanted to be here. I did everything I could to show that I wanted to be a Cowboy and wear the star on my helmet. I wanted to play in front of the best fans in sports and make this Americas [sic] team once again. The team my pops and I grew up cheering for way up in Harrisburg, PA. Unfortunately, I no longer want to be here," Parsons wrote in his post. "I no longer want to be held to close door negotiations without my agent present. I no longer want shots taken at me for getting injured while laying it on the line for the organization, our fans and my teammates. I no longer want narratives created and spread to the media about me. I had purposely stayed quiet in hopes of getting something done." If Parsons does not play Week 1, it would be a major blow to the team's defense. He has been one of the premier passrushers since being selected 12th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Penn State. Parsons has made the Pro Bowl in all four seasons of his career. In 63 career games, Parsons has 52½ sacks with 172 solo tackles and nine forced fumbles. Last season, Parsons had 12 sacks in 13 games.
