The start of Meteorological Summer is approaching and it will definitely feel like it going into the weekend. An upper-level ridge will move in and boost highs across KELOLAND into the 80s. As we flip the calendar on Sunday, how often is it that we see temperatures at or above 80 on June 1st?
With averages currently ranging from the low 70s West River to the mid 70s East River, it is not extremely common. If we take a look into the record books, June has started off in the 80s only about 35% of the time for Sioux Falls. Aberdeen and Pierre were similar near 31%.
Although Sioux Falls was just shy of 80 on June 1st 2024, Pierre and Aberdeen reached lower 80s. Rapid City had the lowest frequency, with the most recent 80-degree reading on June 1st occurring in 2020. They reached 86 degrees, which was the second warmest June 1st on record.
While the warmth will create a great weekend for outdoor plans, cooler and more unsettled weather looks to arrive early next week.

Sioux Falls Pride looking for volunteers

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The pride parade and festival in Sioux Falls relies on over 100 volunteers, but around half of those positions still aren't filled. The group is made up of five board members, who say they can't run the event alone. 'In terms of volunteer needs, our festival always can use more help. So, if you want to help us out, we have two hour time slots from starting at 8 a.m. all the way to 6 p.m. We need help with set up. We need help with tear down. We need help making sure everybody knows where they're going and getting information from pride,' said Rachel Polan, president of Sioux Falls Pride. Lincoln County still best prison site, consultant says Although the event is meant to promote LGBTQ+ pride, that doesn't mean allies aren't able to attend, or even help. 'You do not have to be part of the LGBTQ+ community to be a part of pride,' said Jack Fonder, marketing director for Sioux Falls Pride. 'That's something that we really like to let people know that you can be an ally, you can be, maybe you don't know much about the community, but you're wanting to learn more, or you're wanting to figure out how you can support the community more.' Volunteer roles range from lining up floats for the parade, to picking up trash during the festival at Yankton Trail Park. 'You can help with sell merchandise, you can do concessions, you can run the kids' corner. And then we have some traffic direction at the end of the event just to make sure, because we can only have one way in and out of the festival,' said Polan. And if you're attending the event, Polan says there will be plenty to see and do. 'With the stage event this year, we typically have drag shows all day, which we are still going to do. We're going to bring back Bingo in the Park. So that's been gone for a few years, but we're going to do that again. We're also going to have Sioux Empire Pit Rescue, talking with us and showing off the dogs,' said Polan. The event will take place on June 14 The parade with start at 10 a.m. downtown followed by the festival from noon to 5 p.m. at Yankton Trail Park. Task force members react to consultant's proposal

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — In its latest report, a consultant has new recommendations for the Project Prison Reset Task Force. Arrington Watkins submitted its recommendation Monday morning. After weighing factors such as location, availability to utilities and to emergency vehicle access among other things, the group recommended for the task force to take a closer look at six of the possible 13 sites, with one familiar location leading the way. DOH reports first measles case in South Dakota The six sites at the top of the consultant's list are the existing Lincoln County site, CitiBank and Kappenman, which are both in Sioux Falls, Worthing, Mitchell and Huron. 'It was necessary to somehow get down to a manageable list. Six seems reasonable,' South Dakota Republican Representative and task force member Greg Jamison said. The locations were analyzed based on a point system. At the top was the Lincoln County site, located between Harrisburg and Canton. 'One of the key takeaways is they're trying to find a place for 1500 or 1700 beds all in one place. There's a lot of advantages and efficiencies to having one location with these many beds where you've got one fence, one perimeter to manage, you've got all that food that needs to be prepared,' Jamison said. However, Republican representative and task force member Karla Lems sees it differently. 'I don't think we have to have it all in one spot. I disagree with him on that. I think we have opportunity in Sioux Falls. I go back to the DLR Group study, which made a lot of sense to me. You could build another 300-bed facility between the old hill and the Jameson. You can add up on the Jamison 192 beds,' Lems said. It gives the task force plenty to discuss at its next meeting in Pierre Tuesday. 'I think it's going to be very spirited and, full of ideas, questions and hard answers, probably hard questions. But tomorrow, I think you're going to see some outcomes that finally get this prison issue on the right track,' Jamison said. 'I think we're going to have a lot of input. I think we're going to have testimony from people, probably from these different areas that have been proposed to say, 'These are the things that would be good about it coming to our town or our city.' They're going to have opposition to some of these things,' Lems said. The task force will meet at 10:30 Tuesday morning in Pierre. We will be livestreaming the discussion on on our website.
