‘Will haunt every cricket fan forever': Internet mourns death of 11 in stampede at Bengaluru stadium during RCB's IPL victory celebrations

Indian Express05-06-2025

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) sparked a frenzy among cricket enthusiasts after winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy for the first time in 18 years. On Tuesday, the franchise clashed with Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the final leg at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
On Wednesday morning, the team's management announced they would hold a victory parade in Bengaluru – in an open bus from city's Vidhana Soudha to the Chinnaswamy Stadium – followed by an event at the stadium. Limited free passes were made available online for the event.
However, thousands of fans thronged to the stadium to be a part of the celebrations, which soon turned tragic. In a stampede-like incident outside the stadium on Wednesday evening, 11 people lost their lives and several others sustained injuries.
The incident unfolded around 4.00 PM near Gate 3 of the stadium ahead of the celebrations. Soon after the tragedy, the Internet mourned the lives lost, slamming the authority over crowd management. Sharing a post on X, industrialist Harsh Goenka wrote, 'Delhi station stampede. Kumbh stampede. Bangalore IPL stampede. Dozens die. No resignations. No accountability. No lessons. In India, the life of a common man isn't priceless- it's worthless. Cheaper than a cup of chai! Business will go on as usual. Nothing will change.'

'Honestly, we Indians act too foolish! Till the time we keep running after film stars, cricketers & politicians, we won't improve & neither will our country. Cricket is just a game. Watch it for fun, and move on,' a third user reacted.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, along with Home Minister G Parameshwara and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, visited the injured victims at various hospitals. Leaders from the opposition BJP, including R Ashok, B Y Vijayendra, and Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, also visited the hospitals and demanded an inquiry into the incident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and wrote, 'The mishap in Bengaluru is absolutely heartrending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that those who are injured have a speedy recovery.'

IPL winner Jitesh set to leave Vidarbha, move base to Baroda

1 2 3 4 Nagpur: After playing a key role in RCB's IPL triumph a month back, Jitesh Sharma is set to leave Vidarbha. Sources said that the big-hitting wicketkeeper-batter, who justified his Rs11 crore price tag with a string of stellar shows, will play for Baroda in the next domestic season. A source informed that Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) on Friday received a request for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Jitesh. A player has to obtain a NOC from his home association for shifting base to a new team. Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) officials confirmed that Jitesh will be joining their team in the next season. After making his First Class debut for Vidarbha in October 2015, Jitesh got just 18 matches in the longer format in the last one decade. Many feel he is a much better player than the number of First Class matches he got to play for Vidarbha. "Same was the case with his leadership quality. Vidarbha never fully utilised his captaincy skills. It was only after his exploits in the IPL, first for Kings Punjab and RCB in the last edition, that he has finally managed to command respect — which he always deserved — within the Vidarbha setup," a source said. Punjab Kings were the first to appoint Jitesh as vice captain and then captain in 2024 IPL. Before that Jitesh never got any leadership role in Vidarbha's senior cricket. Post the IPL, Jitesh led Vidarbha in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and took the team to quarterfinal stage. In Vidarbha's next tournament, Vijay Hazare Trophy, he played under Karun Nair. SARWATE TO PLAY FOR CHHATTISGARH Former Vidarbha allrounder Aditya Sarwate, who played for Kerala last season, confirmed that he will move to Chhattisgarh for the upcoming season. The left-arm spinner and solid lower-order batter said that due to family commitments he wanted to move to a team based near Nagpur. "My move to Chhattisgarh has been finalised. I look forward to the new challenge after a fruitful outing with Kerala," Sarawate told TOI. Sarwate's allround performance had propelled Vidarbha to twin Ranji Trophy titles in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons. Last year, Sarwate was one of the standout performers for Kerala as they made it to their first Ranji Trophy final. The title clash, played at Nagpur, saw Vidarbha clinch their third Ranji Trophy on the basis of first innings lead. Sarwate had snapped 40 wickets in his first and only season for Kerala.

Shubman Gill-Yashasvi Jaiswal Take India To 359/3 On Day 1 Of 1st Test Vs England

Last Updated: Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal's centuries lead India to 359/3 on Day 1 of the first Test against England. Skipper Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal's hundreds guided India to 359/3 at stumps on Day 1 of the first Test against England on Friday. Jaiswal achieved his fifth Test century just before tea, reaching the milestone in 144 deliveries with 16 boundaries and a six. Gill reached his hundred during the final session of the day, marking a brilliant start to his leadership. With this hundred, Gill joins an elite group of Indians, Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar and ace batter Virat Kohli, who scored hundreds in their first Test as skipper. Jaiswal and Gill established a significant 129-run hundred for the third wicket after India lost KL Rahul and debutant B Sai Sudharsan in quick succession just before lunch. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant was batting on 65, giving Gill company when stumps were called. For England, skipper Ben Stokes bagged two wickets. Brief Scores: India: 359 for 3 in 85 overs (Yashasvi Jaiswal 101, Shubman Gill 127 not out, Rishabh Pant 65 not out; Ben Stokes 2/43, Brydon Carse 1/70). First Published: June 20, 2025, 23:30 IST

Ex-India Stumper Surprised By Kuldeep Yadav's Omission From India's Playing XI

India opted for a pace-heavy attack with four quicks and a sole spinner in veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja for the series opener at Headingley in Leeds. 'I would have liked Kuldeep Yadav to be in the playing XI. He is your trump card alongside (Jasprit) Bumrah. I would have picked him," Engineer told PTI on Friday, the first day of the opening Test. 'Since he is a quality bowler, England batters would find it difficult to play him. So, I would play him in all five games," he added. The 87-year-old, who featured in 46 Tests for India between 1961 and 1975, also supported new Test captain Shubman Gill, backing the 25-year-old to succeed despite his modest batting record in SENA countries. 'A few people have written Shubman off, saying he hasn't got runs in England or he can't get runs in England because of his technique, but I beg to disagree. He is a class player." He was particularly impressed with Gill's leadership during the 2025 IPL season, where the opener led Gujarat Titans to the Eliminator. 'Shubman has got this captaincy after the IPL. He captained his team pretty well in the IPL. I thought he showed calmness and made the right decisions—bowling changes and fielding changes. 'So, let's give him a chance and an opportunity because I think he'll do well. I have confidence that he's a level-headed young man and willing to listen to senior players like KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant the vice-captain, or certainly Jasprit Bumrah. So, I think he'll do well. Let's back him," he said. Engineer also lauded Yashasvi Jaiswal, who struck a fluent 101 off 159 balls on the opening day, setting the tone for India in the series. 'Credit to Yashasvi Jaiswal for batting patiently despite a painful rib injury from a short ball. He played his shots correctly and batted superbly." Reflecting on England's bowling performance, the former cricketer felt India should exploit the home side's weak spin attack. 'England lack quality spinners. Young Bashir, despite a decent Test record, isn't great and can concede runs. Our batsmen excel against off-spin, so they'll capitalise on him," he said. Engineer added that while the retirement of stalwarts Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R Ashwin has undeniably left a void in the Indian Test setup, it also paves the way for the next generation to step up. 'A player of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin's calibre will undoubtedly be missed, but this creates great opportunities for youngsters like Sai Sudharsan. 'I'm confident we'll see more of Sai in Test cricket, despite his unfortunate dismissal today," added Engineer, referring to the debutant's four-ball duck. Advertisement
