Cricket: England win dramatic Lord's Test against India by 22 runs
Shoaib Bashir bowled Mohammed Siraj for four to seal victory, India's number 11 playing a defensive stroke before the ball trickled down the face of his bat and rolled on to the stumps as he watched on in disbelief.
As the England players celebrated wildly late on Monday, Ravindra Jadeja trudged off the field after making a valiant unbeaten 61 to take India to the brink of an extraordinary win.
The hosts had looked on course for a far more comfortable victory when they reduced India to 112-8 at lunch, but Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah battled for nearly two hours to inch their team towards a target of 193.
Jadeja was given out leg before wicket to Chris Woakes by the umpire. But the decision was overturned on review, and the left-hander heaved the next delivery over mid-wicket for six, prompting loud cheers from the Indian fans.
England finally made the breakthrough when Bumrah, on five, skied an attempted pull off Ben Stokes and was caught by substitute fielder Sam Cook.
The majority of the crowd erupted with a mixture of joy and relief, but Jadeja continued to frustrate England, reaching his 50, off 150 balls, by edging Stokes over the slips for four.
Siraj survived 30 deliveries for his four runs as Jadeja farmed the bowling and took a succession of singles off the fourth ball of the over to dominate the strike.
Siraj suffered a painful blow to his shoulder after being struck by a Jofra Archer delivery and shortly afterwards his resistance was finally broken.
A good morning for England
England had claimed four wickets in the morning to take charge of the match after India resumed on 58-4.
Rishabh Pant played an extraordinary one-handed straight drive for four off Archer to move to nine, but the fast bowler responded two balls later with an excellent delivery which uprooted his off stump.
Stokes snared KL Rahul lbw for 39, the England captain dropping to his knees and imploring the umpire to give him out.
He refused to do so, but England called for a review and the decision was overturned to huge cheers from the crowd.
Washington Sundar was next to fall for a duck, Archer leaping to his right to take a superb one-handed catch off his own bowling.
Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy frustrated England with solid defence in a partnership of 30 until Woakes found the edge of Reddy's bat just before lunch to give the hosts a huge lift as they left the field to warm applause from a packed crowd.
The fourth Test will begin on July 23 at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Oleksandr Usyk has cemented his status as the outstanding heavyweight of his generation with an emphatic fifth-round knockout of Daniel Dubois in their undisputed world title bout at London's Wembley Stadium. Victory on Saturday saw Ukraine's Usyk extend his unbeaten professional record to 24 fights as the WBA, WBC and WBO champion added his British opponent's IBF belt to his collection. Usyk dominated the opening four rounds and early in the fifth, dropped Dubois to the canvas. Moments later, he finished the fight in decisive fashion after a trademark left hook left his British rival unable to beat the count one minute and 52 seconds into the round. It was the second time Usyk, at 38, some 11 years older than his opponent, had defeated Dubois after a ninth-round stoppage success in Krakow, Poland, in 2023, where the Briton was ruled to have landed an illegal low blow in the fifth round. Lennox Lewis, the last British boxer to be the undisputed world champion in 1999, forecast before Saturday's fight that Usyk would face a vastly-improved Dubois, saying: 'Dubois was a baby in the sport and now he's a man…You're not going to see the same Daniel Dubois from 18 months ago.' But after Usyk was roared into the ring by a huge contingent of supporters, many of them waving Ukraine's national flag in a 90,000 capacity crowd at Wembley, best known as the London base of England's national football team, it was largely one-way traffic as their hero conducted a ruthless masterclass against local favourite Dubois. Dubois ‘on a different' level before rematch with champ Usyk
There are many reasons why Oleksandr Usyk should beat Daniel Dubois and leave Wembley Stadium as the undisputed world heavyweight champion on Saturday night. The Ukrainian is undefeated as a professional, including a stoppage of Dubois two years ago, and hasn't lost any bout in 16 years. Usyk feasts on British fighters. He dethroned Anthony Joshua at a packed Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2021. He won a gold medal at the London Olympics. London native Dubois insists things will be different this time and that his three recent knockout victories – most impressively a demolition of Joshua last September at Wembley – prove that he's the guy who can do what no other professional has done: Beat Usyk. 'I'm just on a different level now,' the 27-year-old Dubois said. 'I'm ready to go through whatever I need to on Saturday and get those belts.' An expected crowd of 90,000 will be on hand when Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) puts his WBA, WBC and WBO titles on the line. He'll try to win Dubois' IBF belt to become a two-time undisputed world heavyweight champion. Lennox Lewis was the last British heavyweight to hold every major belt – accomplishing the feat in November 1999. 'In the last three fights we've seen (him) a lot more confident within himself and what he's been able to do in the ring.' Dubois was scheduled to make a title defence against Parker in February, but he backed out at the last minute, citing an illness. Dubois is still heavily influenced by his father, Stanley, who also goes by Dave and guides his son's career. His dad believed in home-schooling his children, including Caroline Dubois, herself a world champion boxer. Caroline Dubois ventured away from her father's management almost two years ago, telling The Associated Press in January that 'it was either that or I probably would have ended up stopping boxing and just be in a really bad mental place.' Riz Khan, Daniel Dubois' manager, said his fighter's success since the loss to Usyk is largely down to one person. 'The architect behind the resurgence has clearly been his father, Stan Dubois, who has meticulously hand-picked every single individual, whether it's the coaching team, whether it's the medics, whether it's from a management point of view, so we have all the credentials to support Daniel in the background,' Khan said. Dubois' attempts at trash-talking seem more like checking a box rather than natural bravado, like when he cracked a smile after yelling 'And the new!' in Usyk's face this week. Earlier, there was also a slow-motion shove of Usyk that lacked conviction. Still, he's the same dude he was in the buildup to the Joshua fight, and that was a spectacular success for Dubois. 'I'm a young lion and I've just got to take over and be the man – execute,' he said.
