Sunderland bursaries to boost young people's creative careers
A new bursary has been launched to help young people reach their artistic ambitions.The Ignite Bursary Programme will allow successful applicants to access up to £500 to follow their creative passions.The scheme is being run by Sunderland Culture and is designed for 12 to 18-year-olds who live in low-income households and for those up to 25 years old with special educational needs or disabilities.Lucy Rees Harris, from Sunderland Culture, said the extra money would help those eligible "realise their creative career ambitions".
The money can be used to buy materials, access work experience, arrange a cultural trip or develop a portfolio."Successful recipients may also want to use a bursary to engage a mentor to help develop networks and connections or to access 'backstage' discussions with artists and creative professionals," Ms Harris said."Or it might be something completely different. You can request funding for anything, if you can demonstrate it will further your creative passion and explain why."
Financial barriers
The bursaries are available through Sunderland Culture's Culture Start project as part of its wider Ignite Young Creatives Programme.Ignite has been designed to address the barriers young people experiencing financial hardship face when trying to work in the arts and culture sector.
The bursary is supported by the Gillian Dickinson Trust, which provides grants to artistic organisations, and the Esmeé Fairbairn Foundation, which aims to improve the natural world and creative communities.

A 53-year-old British man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs. It was filmed slowly driving down Dale Street through groups unaware fans - including children - before it turned onto Water Street. Merseyside Police confirmed reports the Ford Galaxy car followed an ambulance after a road block was temporarily lifted so paramedics could help a man who suffered a suspected heart attack. Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims added eleven people remain in hospital and all are in a stable condition and appear to be recovering well.

Blessings, featuring Clementine Douglas, was released on May 9 and faced criticism from fellow DJ Chicane who took to social media to claim that Harris had "copied" his own song, Offshore, released in 1991. Chicane, real name Nicholas Bracegirdle, posted a video on TikTok showing how a riff in Offshore cut and looped allegedly sounded the same as Blessings. International prize for Gaelic thriller An t-Eilean
A £4 million crime thriller that was the biggest Gaelic drama series in BBC Alba's history has won a top award. The channel commissioned the four-part series An t-Eilean (The Island) which was filmed in the elemental landscape of Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides and also in Glasgow. The Gaelic noir whodunnit, which gripped audiences and was popular on network TV, has won the drama and entertainment prize at Prix Circom 2025, the international television awards. Judges from 15 European regional public service broadcasters selected the winner.
