South Africa's Sanlam sharpens India focus with Shriram wealth management JV

India's Shriram Group and South Africa's Sanlam Group on Thursday announced the launch of a wealth management joint venture firm, which aims to have ₹ 50,000 crore in assets under advice over the next five years.
Shriram Wealth, a 50:50 a joint venture between the two groups, is already operating in nine cities, and aims to soon expand to Nagpur and Coimbatore as well, as the company eyes India's growing affluent and high net worth investor base.
With a strong focus on expanding into tier-II and tier-III cities and catering to a broad base of investors, Shriram Wealth is looking to scale rapidly.
Sanlam Group is focused on three core markets—its home base South Africa, the broader African continent, and India, says Thian Fick, executive for India and Group Initiatives at Sanlam. He noted that with India's large population, strong demographics, and robust economic growth, the country's current 20% contribution to the group's business is set to grow significantly.
Fick told Mint that sluggish economic growth in South Africa has pushed the group to seek opportunities elsewhere. 'That's where the strategy comes from–focusing on Africa beyond South Africa, and India–two markets where we believe our partnerships position us well for success,' he said.
'Simply, the growth rates of India relative to South Africa will make this contribution grow way beyond the 20% over time.'
Vikas Satija, managing director and chief executive, Shriram Wealth, pointed out that high net worth individuals in the affluent segment are expanding at a compounded annual rate of 13-14%.
When asked about the listing plans for Shriram Wealth, Satija said it is still early to discuss a timeline, but emphasized that the business is clearly built with a long-term vision.
He added, 'Eventually, yes, listing could be part of the plan. I don't want to put my neck out and say whether that's in 7, 10, or 20 years—but at some stage one would want to. One goes to the market to raise capital and if you don't need capital, you may not go to the market.'

A new rule by the drug regulator barring exports of any product with less than 60% shelf life is causing huge losses to the domestic pharmaceutical industry with manufacturers being forced to destroy stocks to comply. In a recent meeting with the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation ( CDSCO ), the industry urged for a revision in the rule or an alternative solution. Pharma lobby group Federation of Pharma Entrepreneurs ( FOPE ) has also written to the regulator this week urging the latter to repeal the rule introduced last year. "Our view is that if the importing country allows it, why should we have an objection," said Harish Jain, president, FOPE. "This is causing substantial losses due to destruction of stock," FOPE said in its letter, a copy of which was seen by ET. Live Events "If the manufacturing date is August 2025 and the expiry is July 2027, the drug regulatory authority wants at the time of exports the consignment should have 60% minimum shelf life remaining. Otherwise, they will not allow export," said a senior industry executive. The CDSCO has updated the export NOC checklist , making regulatory approval mandatory for all medicines destined for exports after reports that an Indian company had been exporting unlicensed combinations of drugs to African nations like Ghana and Nigeria. "We have requested the regulatory authority to make this rule mandatory for narcotic drugs, opioid drug combinations, and other habit forming drugs but not for every medicine, even vitamins," said a second industry executive. "This has become a huge challenge for the industry. The companies have to destroy stocks because the export consignments are custom-made with importing country details and cannot be used in India." A government official said the step was taken to make sure that such incidents do not occur. "India is a world pharmacy and we cannot afford to face reputational challenges, particularly concerning the quality of drugs which are being exported to other countries," he said.

The 2,000-kilometre-long undersea cable project between India and the United Arab Emirates, part of the One Sun One World One Grid (OSOWOG) initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is economically viable and could allow large-scale cross-border power trade, Ashish Khanna, director general of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), said on Wednesday. Speaking at the Twenty-fourth Darbari Seth Memorial Lecture organised by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Khanna said the regional interconnection between India and West Asia could address energy security, reduce dependence on costly storage technologies, and facilitate trading of up to 15,000 megawatts of electricity. Khanna stressed that OSOWOG would help countries diversify their energy mix, particularly smaller economies that remain dependent on diesel. 'We are going to help smaller countries that are still 80 per cent dependent on diesel get out of diesel by aggregating their procurement,' he said. ISA is promoting the creation of 'digital twins' for power utilities to optimise energy use. 'Early results are showing that it can actually reduce your renewable energy requirement by 20 per cent because that will optimally dispatch the power generated on the rooftop and in the fields,' he said. Khanna also flagged financing constraints for clean energy in developing nations. 'Of the $2.2 trillion that was spent last year on clean technology, less than 15% came to developing countries, and less than 2% came to Africa. One of the main reasons is the international private sector still perceives a relatively high risk of investing in developing countries,' he said. To address this, ISA has set up a global solar facility in GIFT City in Gujarat, which will design financial innovation structures for each continent, starting with Africa. 'An African solar facility starting with $200 million is giving guarantee for private sector to start investing in distributed renewable energy projects. In Nigeria, the Sovereign Investment Authority is partnering with us, leveraging our funds 30 to 40 times,' Khanna said.

(Bloomberg) -- Kenya's government is considering a separation of the nation's biggest listed company — Safaricom Plc — into three units as part of a process that may include reducing the state's 35% stake in the mobile-phone operator. An assessment has found that there would be 'a huge benefit' to the state from splitting the company into a telecommunications firm, a tower operator and its popular mobile-payments platform M-Pesa, Treasury Secretary John Mbadi said in an interview in the capital, Nairobi, on Wednesday. A final plan on breaking up the company and a reduction in the government's stake has yet to be agreed and would require cabinet approval to be implemented, he said. Kenya's government has been considering offloading shares in Safaricom, which is part-owned by Vodacom Group Ltd. of South Africa, as part of a plan to sell state assets to private investors to boost revenue. Splitting the company into multiple units would offer an opportunity to revalue the entire business and then consider a separate listing of the units, Mbadi said. 'We are discussing whether to offload more shares as an entity or split them and then get the fresh valuation, and then get to that direction,' the minister said. Safaricom shares rose as much as 3.4%, the most in seven weeks. The company declined to comment, while Vodacom didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Kenya's central bank wants the nation's telecoms companies to separate their mobile-money units from their mobile telephony services so that it can effectively supervise the fintech units. While rivals Telkom Kenya Ltd. and Airtel Kenya Ltd. have complied with the directive, Safaricom has been hampered by a tax dispute, according to Governor Kamau Thugge. The Treasury has also almost concluded a review of that tax matter in which Safaricom is estimated to owe 75 billion shillings ($580.5 million), Mbadi said. Splitting Safaricom 'makes little strategic sense,' according to Bloomberg Intelligence analyst John Davies. 'Operational frictions would be unavoidable, any available tower synergies can be gained from sharing deals rather than sales and other African carriers that have brought in external fintech investors have seen no sustained share-price benefit.' Plans to split Safaricom have been under consideration for some time and the company appears to have already taken steps in line with that, according to Ali Hussein Kassim, a technology analyst and chairman of the Association of Fintechs in Kenya, a lobby group. 'There's already M-Pesa Africa, that shows you that Safaricom is on the road to have the mobile money business as a stand alone unit,' Kassim said by phone.
