$100K won by a northern Ont. man from a $1 bet

A photo of retiree, Larry Hubley of Powassan, Ont., accepting a $100,000 lottery prize after winning with Encore on the May 30, 2025, Lotto Max draw. (Supplied/Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation) Larry Hubley of Powassan, Ont., is $100,000 richer after a lucky $1 Encore bet paid off in a major way. The longtime lottery player matched the last six of seven Encore numbers in exact order in the May 30 Lotto Max draw, turning a small wager into a six-figure windfall. Hubley has played lottery games 'since the days of Wintario,' the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) said in a news release Monday. 'He enjoys a variety of games, including Lotto Max, Lotto 6/49 and Daily Grand,' said the provincial lottery retailer. 'He typically plays twice a week, using OLG's Quick Pick feature to make his selections and adding Encore to all his tickets.' 'I was shocked' 'I bought this ticket as part of my regular weekly routine,' Hubley said during his visit to the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to collect his winnings. 'A couple of days after the draw, I went to the store and scanned my ticket using the ticket checker. Suddenly, I saw a prize of $100,000 on the screen. I scanned my ticket again, just to be sure it was real. In that moment, I was shocked and very happy.' This is Hubley's first major lottery win and he immediately headed home to share the news with his wife. 'I showed her the validation slip, and her jaw dropped in disbelief,' he said. 'She was just as surprised and excited as I was.' Investing in the future Hubley told OLG he plans to save for the future, invest and share with family. 'Being a winner feels great!' — Larry Hubley, leaving the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto, Ont. Encore, which offers 22 ways to win, can be added to most lottery games for a dollar, with draws held twice daily. More details on the game can be found on OLG's official website. The winning ticket was purchased at MacEwen on Seymour Street in North Bay. This follows the announcement of a $34 million Lotto Max winner in the region last week. Play responsibly 'OLG supports safe play and wants to keep the fun in the game,' said OLG on its website. 'That's why OLG is proud to be a leader in promoting responsible gambling with our globally recognized Playsmart program.' Playsmart offers information on gambling games. Create Account The two-time Academy Award-winner tore into the Dallas Cowboys – specifically owner Jerry Jones — during an appearance on ESPN's First Take , saying that the franchise cares more about earning money than trophies. Washington made the comments while promoting his latest movie, Highest 2 Lowes t, with director Spike Lee. The film is the pair's first collaboration since Inside Man in 2006. 'I've been a Cowboys fan since the '60s. He's making it hard for me,' Washington said about Jones. 'Not to be a fan, because I'm still a Cowboys fan. I'm still going to have the star on the side of the hat, but he ain't thinking about us. He's thinking about his pocket.' Your noon-hour look at what's happening in Toronto and beyond. Washington appeared to be referencing the Cowboys contract standoff with pass rusher Micah Parsons, who is in the final year of his contract and looking for an extension. In fact, the tense negotiations have broken down to the point that the superstar posted a trade request on social media, adding that he 'no longer wants to play for the Dallas Cowboys.' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. During negotiations, Jones also appeared to take shots at Parsons through comments to the media. 'There's box office and there's Oscars, Jerry,' Washington said. 'Been a while, huh? Ain't been to the show, you wouldn't know … what it is to win.' Washington added that his critiques of the team only come because of how much he cares for the franchise. 'And I love the Cowboys! I love the Cowboys. Because I really love them, this is why I feel the way I feel,' Washington said. While the Cowboys haven't won a Super Bowl since 1995 — and haven't even appeared in a NFC conference championship game since then, either – the franchise remains the most valuable in the world. In fact, it became the first franchise to reach US$10 billion last year. The team also is set to feature in a high-profile Netflix docuseries, America's Team: The Gambler and his Cowboys , which premieres next week on the streaming service.
