Death sentence for trio in RM103mil drug haul
JOHOR BARU: The High Court here today sentenced three men to death for trafficking more than 1.48 tonnes of methamphetamine six years ago, part of what was then the country's largest drug haul. Judge Datuk Abu Bakar Katar handed down the sentence against Pang Ming Siong, 54; Cheng Foot Leong, 46; and Tok Chun Wei, 41, after ruling the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt at the close of their case. He said the 1,483,962.98g of drugs constituted a huge quantity, and the elaborate concealment in Chinese Guanyinwang tea packets sewn into gunny sacks and hidden in a disused fish pond far from public view were clear indications of an attempt to evade detection. "The court took into consideration the weight and manner of concealment, and finds those involved deserve the ultimate penalty. "All three accused were ordered to hang until death, with the execution date to be set," he said. The trio were found guilty of committing the offence at a fish pond in Jalan Tanah Merah, Taman Desa Cemerlang, at 7.30am on March 19, 2019. They were charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39B(2) and read with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries the mandatory death sentence. Deputy public prosecutor Lydia Salleh urged the court to impose the maximum sentence, describing it as a "rarest of the rare" case given the massive drug volume. The bust, valued at RM103.2 million, was then Malaysia's largest meth seizure, involving 2.06 tonnes of the drug in 2,000 Chinese tea packets. The joint operation was conducted by the federal and Johor narcotics divisions, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and the Customs Department. The men were first charged on March 31, 2019, following the seizure reported on March 22 that year.

MMEA intercepts boat carrying foreign nationals off Kudat
Published on: Friday, August 08, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 08, 2025 By: Patimang Abdul Ghani Text Size: Some of the detainees. KUDAT: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) foiled an attempt to smuggle foreign nationals into Sabah on Thursday. Kudat Maritime Zone director Hasbullah Omar said the operation was based on information from the Sabah Swasla radar, which was tracked by an MMEA patrol boat at about 6.30pm. Advertisement He said the boat refused to stop when approached, prompting a short chase before it was intercepted about 10.22 nautical miles west of Tanjung Kalutan, near the waters off Pulau Balambangan, Banggi. Checks found a skipper, a crew member and eight passengers — four women and four men aged between 19 and 40 — on board, and the vessel was escorted to the Kudat Marina jetty for investigation under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 and Immigration Act 1959/63. Hasbullah urged the maritime community in Kudat waters to work with the authorities to combat smuggling and cross-border crime, and to report any such activity via the Kudat Operations Centre at 088-611858 or the 24-hour emergency line 999. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? #NSTviral: Video of 'budget Flying Dutchman' detained in Malaysian waters goes viral
KUALA LUMPUR: A video of a foreign fishing vessel being detained by Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency members has gone viral because the ship resembles what some netizens called a "low budget Flying Dutchman". A one-minute TikTok clip shows a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) patrol closing in on the vessel, which appeared to "hover" above the horizon from a distance — an optical illusion that stunned viewers. Two MMEA officers are then seen leaping aboard to detain the crew, suspected of illegally fishing in national waters. The incident quickly lit up social media, with comment sections flooded with praise for the officers' bravery and calls for decisive action against illegal fishing. "Respect to the maritime officers — fearless enough for just two of them to jump on board for an inspection," commented Pantalonalagend. User Cawal, meanwhile, said it was time to reclaim and protect the country from intrusion from foreign fishing vessels. "Never take this lightly. If we allow it, they will take all our marine resources," said Zarn. The Flying Dutchman is a legendary ghost ship said to be cursed to sail the seas for eternity, unable to make port. An interpretation of the ship is featured prominently in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series of movies.
