NFL star Shannon Sharpe leaves ESPN after settling sexual assault case

BBC News3 days ago
Shannon Sharpe, a former National Football League (NFL) star and popular US podcaster, has been dropped by sport network ESPN after settling a legal case which accused him of rape. The case, brought by a woman who alleges that Mr Sharpe assaulted her during a nearly two-year relationship, asked for more than $50m (£38m) in damages.Sharpe, 57, denied the claims. Earlier this month, a settlement was reached, and the case was dismissed. After reports of his break with the TV network came out in US media, Sharpe said on one of his podcasts on Thursday: "I'm sure everybody's heard the news by now that I will not be returning to ESPN."
It appears that Sharpe was dropped rather than voluntarily left the network. "I found out this information a little earlier in the week," he said. The BBC contacted ESPN for comment. The former NFL star had not appeared on the network since the lawsuit was filed in the state of Nevada in April. The anonymous woman said Sharpe subjected her to "pain and suffering, psychological and emotional distress, mental anguish, embarrassment and humiliation".The accuser was 19 at the time she met Mr Sharpe in 2023. She said in a legal filing that she met Sharpe in a Los Angeles gym, they had a "rocky consensual relationship", that he was "aggressive" and that he raped her as recently as January.Sharpe denied the allegations and said at the time he was the target of a "shakedown" and that the allegations were "false and disruptive".On 18 July, the woman's lawyer, Tony Buzbee – who has also represented people suing Sean "Diddy" Combs and other public figures – said the case had been settled and wrote in an online post: "Both sides acknowledge a long-term consensual and tumultuous relationship."All matters have now been addressed satisfactorily, and the matter is closed."The terms of the settlement were not disclosed.Sharpe has millions of subscribers to his podcasts Nightcap and Club Shay Shay.He played in the NFL for 14 years with the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens, racking up 62 receiving touchdowns and playing on three Super Bowl championship teams. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.On an episode of Nightcap released on Thursday, he did not directly address the allegations, but apologised to his older brother Sterling Sharpe, who is also a former NFL standout and will himself be inducted into the hall of fame at the weekend."I really want it to be about him and I want it to be about my family... This coming out will overshadow everything he's worked his entire life for," Shannon Sharpe said on the podcast. "I just wish this thing could have waited until Monday."

Former US soldier suspected of killing 4 in Montana remains at large

The former U.S. soldier suspected of killing four people at a Montana bar was still at large early Sunday and may be armed after escaping in a stolen vehicle containing clothes and camping gear, officials said. Authorities believe 45-year-old Michael Paul Brown killed four people on Friday morning at The Owl Bar in Anaconda, Montana, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of Missoula in a valley hemmed in by mountains. Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen said at a press conference Sunday that Brown committed the shooting with a rifle that law enforcement believes was his personal weapon. All the victims were adults between 50 and 70 years old. One of the victims was the bartender. Knudsen warned residents in the town of just over 9,000 people that Brown, who lived next door to the bar where he was a regular, could come back to the area. 'This is an unstable individual who walked in and murdered four people in cold blood for no reason whatsoever. So there absolutely is concern for the public,' Knudsen said. Numerous public events were canceled over the weekend as the search entered its third day, according to local Facebook pages. Investigators are considering all possible options for Brown's whereabouts, the attorney general said. That includes searching the woods where Brown hunted and camped while he was a kid. But Knudsen noted that, during peak tourist season in western Montana, some law enforcement officials would have to return to their local jurisdictions for their regular responsibilities. Brown served in the Army as an armor crewman from 2001 to 2005 and deployed to Iraq from early 2004 until March 2005, according to Lt. Col. Ruth Castro, an Army spokesperson. Brown was in the Montana National Guard from 2006 to March 2009, Castro said, and left military service at the rank of sergeant. Brown's niece, Clare Boyle, told the AP her uncle has struggled with mental illness for years and she and other family members repeatedly sought help. 'This isn't just a drunk/high man going wild,' she said in a Facebook message. 'It's a sick man who doesn't know who he is sometimes and frequently doesn't know where or when he is either.' Knudsen said on Sunday that Brown was 'known' to local law enforcement before the shooting. It was widely believed that he knew at least some of the victims, given how close he lived to the bar. Law enforcement released a photograph of Brown from surveillance footage taken shortly after the fatal shootings. He appeared to be barefoot and in minimal clothing. But law enforcement now believes Brown ditched the vehicle he escaped in and stole a different one that had camping gear, shoes and clothes in it — leaving open the possibility that Brown is now clothed. The last time that law enforcement saw Brown was on Friday afternoon, but there was 'some confusion' because there were multiple white vehicles involved, Knudsen said. There is a $7,500 reward for any information that leads to Brown's capture. 'This is still Montana. Montanans know how to take care of themselves. But please, if you have any sightings, call 911,' Knudsen said.

Bronzed Brady: Patriots finally to unveil QB statue on Friday

August 3 - The long-awaited statue of Tom Brady, delayed due to scheduling issues, finally will be unveiled Friday outside of Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft announced in June 2024 that the team would be erecting the 12-foot statue during that season. However, when Brady's new employer, Fox Sports, changed plans to send the retired quarterback and its No. 1 broadcast team to Gillette on a game day, the statue dedication was put on hold. Now, a short ceremony will be held Friday ahead of the Patriots' preseason game against the Washington Commanders. Space constraints will allow only limited viewing, but the ceremony will be screened on the videoboards inside the stadium, ESPN reported. Kraft and Brady are expected to speak. "We've had it in storage for over a year. We had hoped to do it a year ago, but Tommy is so busy. It was just hard to find a time," Kraft told Kay Adams on the "Up & Adams Show" last week. "When he got his announcing job with Fox -- by the way, I think he's off the charts with what he's doing. How lucky are we to have the 199th pick [in the 2000 NFL Draft] be the greatest player to every play in the over 100-year history of the NFL? He played for us and he's just a great human being. We are excited to honor him before the game next Friday." It will be a nice culmination to a week of birthday celebrations for Brady, who turned 48 on Sunday. Brady led the Patriots to six Super Bowl championships during his tenure in New England from 2000-19. Last June, Kraft said the Brady statue will be the only one in the plaza. "(The statue) will stand alone in the plaza outside of the Hall of Fame to symbolize his position, not as the greatest in franchise history, but as the greatest in all of NFL history," Kraft said. Brady was a three-time NFL Most Valuable Player who holds the league records for completions (7,753), pass attempts (12,050), passing yards (89,214) and touchdown passes (649). He added his record seventh Super Bowl championship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2020 season. --Field Level Media

The basketball legend announced his new career while hosting an alumni game at Weber State. 'My relationship with coach (Eric) Duft and this program means a lot to me, and seeing the success of the program means a lot to me,' Lillard said, per the Ogden Standard-Examiner. 'I feel like I can do a lot to help the program be successful, to help the players even individually continue to grow their careers past college, that's something that I'm passionate about.' The Weber State Wildcats haven't made the NCAA Tournament since 2016. They went 12-22 last season. 'I believe in what this program represents and the culture that continues to grow at Weber State,' Lillard said in a statement.
