Ram Gopal Varma Plans Out-of-Court Settlement in 2018 Cheque Case After Jail Sentence

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma moves to settle his cheque bouncing case from 2018, after being sentenced to jail and fined by an Andheri court.
Back in January, a magistrate's court in Andheri found Varma guilty under the Negotiable Instruments Act. He was sentenced to three months in jail and ordered to pay Rs 3,72,219 to the complainant within three months.
The case goes back to 2018, when a company named Shree, represented by partner Mahesh Chandra Mishra, filed a complaint. The dispute was over unpaid dues related to a hard disk supply to Varma's firm. Varma, however, denied that he issued the cheque in question. His legal team filed an appeal in the sessions court in February, challenging the verdict.
But things seem to be shifting. On Monday, Varma and the complainant submitted a joint statement in court, stating their plan to settle the matter through the Lok Adalat.
With that update, the court agreed to adjourn the hearing until November, giving them time to work things out. It also granted two chances for both sides to reach a mutual agreement.
Meanwhile, on the work front, Ram Gopal Varma's psychological thriller, Saree, which was originally made in Telugu and dubbed into several other languages, is streaming on OTT platform Aha. Following its theatrical release in April 2025, the filmmaker decided to bring the film to OTT. The film was written by Ram Gopal Varma, directed by Giri Krishna Komal, and produced by Ravi Shankar Varma.
The psychological thriller Saaree dives deep into the unsettling transformation of love into obsession. The story kicks off during a holiday trip, where a man while spending time with his group of friends, spots a woman draped in a strikingly elegant saree. Captivated at first glance, what starts as infatuation quickly spirals into an unhealthy fixation.

Anupam Kher breaks silence on Saiyaara dominating Tanvi The Great at box office: 'Agar paisa hi sab kuch hota...'

Comparisons and competition are unavoidable when two movies are released at roughly the same time. That's precisely what happened when Mohit Suri 's elegant romantic drama Saiyaara and Anupam Kher 's touching drama Tanvi The Great opened in theaters on the same day. Tanvi The Great failed to achieve the same level of commercial success as the latter, which dominated the box office with over Rs 500 crore and captured the hearts of the public with its music and youthful star cast. However, it isn't keeping Anupam Kher up at night. He believes that movies are about feelings rather than profits. When asked if he believes the Saiyaara craze is to blame for his film's poor performance, the veteran actor responded, "I don't believe that's true," in an interview with News18. 'A few years down the line, when someone will ask you what are your five favorite films are, you won't name the ones based on which of these movies made a business worth crores." The actor continued, "You'll name the ones which touched your hearts." 'Maybe Tanvi the Great didn't mint much money, but it is still priceless. I recently met a lady outside the theater who hugged me tightly and started crying, saying this was the best film she has ever watched," Kher added. Kher's remarks provided a much-needed break in a society that is fixated on numbers. 'You don't value everything based only on money. Agar paisa hi sab kuch hota, to phir log hamesha five-star hotel me hi khate na, dhaba koi kyu jata?" He revealed that he firmly supports his film in spite of the poor collections. 'My film is outstanding commercially," he stated. Tanvi The Great is subtly capturing hearts, while Saiyaara continues to rule the screen thanks to its box office power and Gen-Z appeal. Anupam Kher is the film's producer and director. He co-stars with Iain Glen. On July 18, 2025, Tanvi the Great was released in theaters.

6 PHED engrs served notice over 150 crore tubewell scam in Jalore

Jaipur: Public health engineering department (PHED) has issued notices to six engineers of the department, including a retired engineer, for alleged involvement in a scam of Rs 150 crore. Officials said these engineers reportedly gave Operations and Maintenance (O&M) tenders to two firms for more than 900 tubewells in Jalore district when they were entitled to O&M of only 20 tubewells. "We took up the issue with PHED minister Kanhaiya Lal Choudhary. Following his instructions, we are going to take major steps against these accused engineers. We will also lodge complaints with police in this regard," disclosed a senior PHED official Wednesday. An official of the department claimed that the accused—then executive engineers Umesh Kumar Meena, Shyam Bihari Bairwa, Jitendra Trivedi, Hemant Kumar Bairwa, Ashish Dwivedi (retd), and Hemant Kumar Vaishnav—gave the work orders for O&M of 981 tubewells on Aug 12, 2022, to two firms—MM Construction and MS Raj Enterprise. "In gross violation of norms, the then superintendent engineer of the circle issued this work order for 981 tubewells. The two firms should have got work orders for only 20 tubewells. For the last three years, the department is unnecessarily wasting money on O&M expenditure for such a huge number of additional tubewells. The department has also blacklisted the two firms," the official added. Investigation revealed that PHED bore O&M expenditure for around 3,500 tubewells in Jalore for the last three years, when the actual number of tubewells of the department in the district was only close to 1,500.
