'I Will Try To Continue The Legacy': Lamine Yamal Vows To Honour Barcelona's Coveted No.10 Shirt

News183 days ago
Lamine Yamal, now 18, received Barcelona's iconic No. 10 jersey, once worn by Messi and Maradona. With 100+ appearances and major achievements, his future looks bright.
Just three days after celebrating his 18th birthday, Lamine Yamal received the most symbolic gift of his career so far — Barcelona's iconic No. 10 jersey.
The prodigious winger, widely regarded as the brightest talent of his generation, has now inherited a number worn by some of the greatest names in football history, including Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho, and Diego Maradona.
While Yamal has consistently avoided direct comparisons to Messi, he acknowledged the weight of the number he now wears.
'I will try to continue this legacy," Yamal said confidently on Wednesday, showing no signs of intimidation by the jersey's legendary past.
Despite his youth, Yamal has already made over 100 first-team appearances, scored 25 goals, and helped Barcelona secure two La Liga titles since debuting as a 15-year-old in 2023.
Yamal's impact extends beyond club football. Just one day after turning 17, he played a pivotal role in Spain's Euro 2024 triumph, becoming the youngest-ever player to win a major international tournament.
The electric winger also helped Barcelona complete a domestic treble in the 2024–25 season, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup — making him a strong contender for this year's Ballon d'Or.
Whether he can replicate Messi's longevity remains to be seen, but so far, Yamal has answered every challenge placed before him.
'I left fear behind in the park in Mataró a while ago," he said, referencing his hometown. His trademark goal celebration — flashing a '304' with his fingers — honors the postcode of Rocafonda, the neighborhood where he grew up.
A New Era Begins
In May, Yamal signed a new contract through 2031, securing his future at the club and making him one of Barcelona's highest-paid players. With the No. 10 shirt now officially his and adulthood just beginning, his next chapter is set to be even more monumental.
'We have to keep enjoying it above all," he added. 'Because when we're enjoying ourselves, we're much happier — and we can win."

Average day for Bhatia and Rai at British Open

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Portrush (Northern Ireland), Jul 20 (PTI) Indian American golfer Akshay Bhatia shot a 1-under 70 in the third round to be Tied 34th at the British Open here. Bhatia had two birdies on the seventh and the ninth and seemed to be ready to get more before two bogeys on the back nine. Indo-British Aaron Rai, who had shown a lot of promise in the first eight holes on the first day, seemed to have lost that momentum. He shot even par 71 and was 18 places down on his second round to be T-44. Sahith Theegala had missed the cut. Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler continued his dominant performance with a bogey-free 4-under 67 that included an eagle and two birdies as he moved to 14-under and four clear of the field. The Scratch and Sniff Chronicles: Book mixes Bengali mystery with gothic flair

Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Jul 20 (PTI) Blending elements of Bengal's detective tradition with gothic fiction, a new book promises a gripping whodunnit laced with humor and unexpected twists and turns. 'The Scratch and Sniff Chronicles", published by Niyogi Books, is written by Singapore-based writer Hemangini Dutt Majumder. 'Murder mysteries are my happy place. I unabashedly love every trope related to the whodunnit style. That said, the germ of this novel really came from the lead protagonist Olympia Ghoshal Chattergé, or Ollie, the likable doofus, who has lived in my head for several years. '… I thought it would be fascinating to flip the script and make her condition a sort of super-power rather than an affliction," Majumder, who previously authored children's book 'The Mystery of the Many, Many Missing Things", said in a statement. The story follows Ollie, a young woman with an uncanny sense of smell, an unusual symptom of a health condition, and a rare female wine sommelier and beverage consultant. Her life changes quite dramatically when she and her entire family decide to relocate to their ancestral estate, Neelbari, in Chandannagar, where strange and mysterious incidents begin to unfold. 'Is the malevolent spirit of her great-grandmother really haunting Neelbari? And why has their arrival caused so much alarm? What secrets are the walls and gardens of the hundred-year-old estate hiding? Why does no one seem to be telling the truth? What follows is a gripping whodunnit with ample doses of humour and delicious twists and turns?" are among the questions that unravel in the story. The book is endorsed by the likes of celebrated writer and Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) co-director Namita Gokhale and former diplomat TCA Raghavan. While Raghavan lauds Majumder for bringing to life a 'lovable but eccentric Bengali family with wit and empathy", Gokhale described the novel as a 'multilayered literary tribute to the classical Bangla whodunnit". 'It is an olfactory journey through stories and spectres and scary situations," she added. The book, priced at Rs 495, is available for purchase across online and offline stores. Pacer Anshul Kamboj added to India squad as cover for Akash Deep, Arshdeep

Manchester, Jul 20 (PTI) Pacer Anshul Kamboj has been added to the India squad in England as cover for Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh, who are racing against time to be ready for the fourth Test beginning here at the Old Trafford on July 23. Akash Deep, who is dealing with a groin niggle, played in the second and third Test against England at Birmingham and Lord's respectively, while left-arm pacer Arshdeep is yet to feature in a match in the on-going series. There is no clarity as yet on Akash Deep's availability, while Arshdeep is unlikely to be available for selection for the Manchester Test, and therefore the selectors decided to call Kamboj, PTI has learned. Arshdeep copped a blow on his left hand while trying to stop a shot from Sai Sudharsan on his follow through during the net session at Beckenham on Thursday, which necessitated the bandaging of his bowling arm. 'We'll take a call on the combination we play, particularly given the Arshdeep situation as well, we'll make that call closer to Manchester," assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate had said. 'He took a ball while he was bowling…it's just a cut, so we have to see how bad the cut is. Obviously the medical team has taken him off to see a doctor and obviously if he needs stitches or doesn't need stitches that's going to be important to our planning for the next few days," he added. The 24-year-old Kamboj is a worthy addition to the squad after his impressive effort for India A against the England Lions in two side games prior to the Test series. He took five wickets across four innings at Northampton and Canterbury while moving the ball appreciably and finding disconcerting bounce on occasions. The Haryana pacer is a hit the deck seam bowler and is being looked as a future prospect as Mukesh Kumar is already on the wrong side of 30s while Harshit Rana is yet to find his strides in red ball cricket. Kamboj shot into fame after taking all 10 wickets in an innings against Kerala last year in a Ranji Trophy match at Lahli. He is only the third bowler to achieve that feat in the Ranji Trophy after Bengal's Premangsu Chatterjee (1956-57) and Rajasthan's Pradeep Somasundaram (1985-86). Overall, he took 34 wickets from six matches in the last edition of the premier domestic red-ball tournament.
