Melaka govt calls for improved training for stage bus drivers
The service, commonly known as "Pink Bus," is managed by a concessionaire appointed by the Transport Ministry.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh made this call following a recent fatal accident involving a stage bus and growing public complaints about reckless driving.
"Many locals attribute these incidents to poor driving conduct, with some drivers displaying negligence. There have been cases where carelessness has led to accidents," he said on Wednesday (May 28).
He spoke after attending a grassroots programme with local Chinese community leaders under the "Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat" initiative at SJK(C) Bertam Ulu.
Ab Rauf said the state government is not involved in driver selection or operational aspects, as the contract is awarded by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD).
However, the safety of Melaka residents remains a top priority.
"I urge the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and traffic police to intensify educational and enforcement efforts to instil greater discipline among bus drivers."
"I take these accidents very seriously, especially when there are clear signs of negligence and inefficiency," he said.
He expressed hope that the concessionaire company would enhance its training programmes to prevent future tragedies.
On May 26, a subcontractor of a utility company was killed after a stage bus rammed a parked car on the Lebuh Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin (AMJ) route at Sungai Petai.
The crash occurred around 4.55pm and claimed the life of 23-year-old Muhammad Aiman Mohd Farid, believed to have been thrown from the vehicle into a drain.
The 22-year-old driver of the car, Muhammad Hakimi Hafiz Baharin, sustained bodily injuries.
Following the incident, the 37-year-old bus driver was remanded for three days starting Tuesday (May 27) to assist in the investigation.
Earlier in his speech, Ab Rauf reiterated his administration's commitment to serving all communities in the state.
"We must reject any attempts to divide us along racial or religious lines. Under my leadership, I will not allow such sentiments to take root," he added.

'After eight months, it began to bear fruit, which encouraged me to plant more. 'The grapes are mainly for my family to enjoy. I took the initiative to produce grape seedlings planted in polybags and discarded polystyrene containers. 'Now, the seedlings are in high demand and frequently ordered by the public,' she added. 2 MACC officers, ex-officer freed of robbing Chinese businessman
Published on: Monday, August 04, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 04, 2025 By: Ho Kit Yen, FMT Text Size: The sessions court acquitted MACC officers Haffiz Radzi and Fahmee Nor and former officer Azwan Asli of robbing a Chinese businessman four years ago. Kuala Lumpur: The sessions court here freed two Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officers and a former officer on charges of robbing a Chinese businessman four years ago. Judge Izralizam Sanusi held that the prosecution failed to prove the charges against officers Haffiz Radzi and Fahmee Nor as well as former officer Azwan Asli. The three were accused of committing a gang robbery on Kun Gao on Dec 10, 2021 of RM952,690 and 1,225 yuan in cash, as well as a luggage bag and a Louis Vuitton bag at the businessman's home in Jalan Ampang. The court said that the trio did not intimidate the victim as they were there to investigate the Chinese national for money laundering. 'The victim told the court he was not afraid (of the three men) as he had not committed any wrongdoing. 'There was also no evidence that the victim was threatened with any guns by the three men, although he claimed that one of them carried a gun in his backpack,' Izralizam said, adding that the existence of the alleged gun was not proven. Deputy public prosecutor Nor Aisyah Zanyuin appeared for the prosecution while lawyer Dzulkifli Ahmad represented the three men. Lawyer Phyllia Lim held a watching brief for the Chinese man. Dzulkifli later told reporters that they were grateful for the court's decision. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
