DraftKings to Introduce Transaction Fee in Illinois

Business Upturn13-06-2025
BOSTON, June 12, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — In response to the recent and prior sports wagering tax increases passed by the Illinois state legislature on all mobile and online sports wagers placed with licensed operators, DraftKings Inc. (Nasdaq: DKNG) today announced that it will implement a 50-cent transaction fee on all mobile and online bets placed in Illinois through DraftKings Sportsbook, effective September 1, 2025.
'Illinois has been an important part of our growth, and we're proud to have contributed meaningfully to the state through tax revenue, job creation, and a sustained investment in responsible gaming tools and resources,' said Jason Robins, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of DraftKings. 'We are disappointed that Illinois policymakers have chosen to more than triple our tax rate over the past two years, and we are very concerned about what this will do to the legal, regulated industry. Meanwhile, Illinois continues to fuel the rapidly growing illegal industry, which pays no taxes or fees and provides none of the consumer protections that regulated operators offer.'
DraftKings continues to support collaborative policymaking that works for the state and allows for the long-term sustainability of the industry. Should the legislation be repealed, the company will immediately remove the Illinois-specific per wager transaction fee.

Sky star Angel Reese returns from back injury, drops 19 points in loss to Storm

Angel Reese finally made her return to the court on Tuesday night. It just wasn't enough to lead the Chicago Sky to a win. Reese dropped a team-high 19 points and had seven rebounds in their 94-88 loss to the Seattle Storm at Wintrust Arena on Tuesday. She shot 9 of 13 from the field, too. It marked her first game back in several weeks while dealing with a back injury. Reese was on a minutes restriction and played in just 26 despite being in the starting lineup. 'I want to hoop,' she said before the game, via the Chicago Sun Times. 'I'm just happy to be out here to play the game I love.' [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Both Reese and the Sky didn't elaborate much on her injury or recovery over the seven games she missed. Reese said before the game that she'd address it at the end of the year. She missed two road trips and one home game recovering. 'Put all the bulls**t to the side, I wanna hoop," she said. Reese entered the night averaging 14.2 points and 12.6 rebounds per game this season. She hadn't played since the team's loss to the Washington Mystics on July 29. She had 22 points and 13 rebounds in that contest. The Storm led nearly the entire way on Tuesday night, and surged ahead just before halftime while limiting Chicago to just 14 points as a group. Though they scored only six points as a group in the second half of the third period, the Storm still carried a 16-point lead into the fourth quarter. That was just enough for them to fend off the Sky's late surge and escape with the six-point win. Ariel Atkins added 19 points, five assists and five rebounds to go with Reese's 19 points in the loss for Chicago. Kamilla Cardoso finished with 10 points, and Elizabeth Williams finished with 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench. The Sky went just 8-of-16 as a group from behind the 3-point line, too, and put up 38 points in the final quarter to get within striking distance. The Sky won just a single game without Reese and hold one of the worst records in the league at 8-26 with their latest loss, which is better than only the Connecticut Sun. They've been all-but eliminated from postseason contention, too. Skylar Diggins led the Storm with 24 points and six assists in the win. Nneka Ogwumike added 21 points and six rebounds, and Dominique Malonga put up 15 points off the bench. The Storm are also in the midst of a rough stretch. They entered the night having lost lost seven of their last eight. The win brought them back to 18-18 on the season, however, which has them in eighth in the league standings. Though Reese's second season in the league isn't much better from a team perspective, she's at least in a position to finish out the year on the court. That has to count for something.

Taillon and Busch star as the Cubs beat the Brewers 4-1 for a doubleheader sweep

CHICAGO (AP) — Jameson Taillon pitched six effective innings in his return from a calf injury, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-1 on Tuesday night for a sweep of their split doubleheader. Michael Busch drove in two runs as Chicago improved to 4-2 on an eight-game homestand. Ian Happ had two hits, and Owen Caissie contributed a bloop RBI single. Coupled with their 6-4 win in the first game of the day, the Cubs (72-54) moved within seven games of the NL Central-leading Brewers (79-47). Andrew Vaughn's first-inning RBI single accounted for Milwaukee's only run in the second game. Sal Frelick nearly had a sacrifice fly in the seventh, but right fielder Willi Castro made a perfect throw to the plate to complete an inning-ending double play. Milwaukee right-hander Brandon Woodruff (4-1) permitted three runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings in his eighth start of the season. Busch drove in Caissie with a second-inning double, lifting Chicago to a 2-1 lead. Nico Hoerner added an RBI single in the fifth. Matt Shaw raced his way to a valuable insurance run in the sixth. He hit a one-out triple and scored with a headfirst slide when Gold Glove second baseman Brice Turang threw home on Busch's grounder. Taillon (8-6) allowed five hits in his first big league start since June 29. He had been sidelined by a right calf strain. Andrew Kittredge pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save. Milwaukee finished the game without shortstop Joey Ortiz, who departed in the seventh with a lower-body injury. Key moment Castro's throw home in the seventh sent a charge through the crowd of 34,540 at Wrigley Field. Key stat The Brewers dropped to 55-15 when they score first. Up next Jacob Misiorowski (4-1, 3.89 ERA) pitches for Milwaukee on Wednesday night, and fellow right-hander Colin Rea (9-5, 3.99 ERA) starts for Chicago. Misiorowski is 1-1 with a 6.27 ERA in his last five outings. ___ AP MLB:
