Fancy sunbathing and snorkelling at a once-forgotten holiday resort? It's just become easier than ever for travellers to return to Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt. TUI has announced it will reintroduce direct flights from East Midlands Airport from March 2026. Sharm El Sheikh was a popular holiday spot for British travellers in the early 2000s, with an estimated 600,000 British tourists visiting at its peak. The Red Sea resort became known for golden sandy beaches, guaranteed sunshine and budget-friendly hotels. But its popularity took a big hit in 2015 when a terror attack on a Russian passenger plane killed all 224 people onboard. Flights from the UK were suspended for four years, only resuming in 2019 after airport security was significantly overhauled and the UK Foreign Office deemed it safe to visit. Sharm El Sheikh is slowly making its way onto the radar of British Holidaymakers – and the new TUI route could help place it back on the map. But what can travellers expect? The Egyptian city stretches along a scenic coastal strip on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, overlooking the Red Sea. It's known for its sunset-coloured sands, crystal clear waters and dramatic desert landscapes. It's a popular snorkelling and diving destination thanks to vibrant coral reefs like those in Ras Mohammed National Park and the Straits of Tiran. Travellers can expect to spot tropical fish, turtles and the occasional reef shark or two. Of course, if you just want to relax, there are plenty of beach options to do so. Naama Bay is a favourite for tourists, with shops and cafes to explore, while Shark's Bay is a quieter alternative and a perfect snorkelling destination if you get bored. Away from the coast, there's still lots to explore, from quad biking and jeep safaris through the desert to traditional camel rides and trips to Mount Sinai – a popular tourist spot believed to be the site where Moses received the Ten Commandments. You'll also have to factor in a trip to Old Market (Sharm El-Maya), where you can wander its eclectic streets, haggle for souvenirs, and buy yourself traditional spices and tea. There's not a bad time to visit Sharm El Sheikh, thanks to its desert climate and year-round sunshine. Temperatures are currently hitting 36C, though during the summer, it can push into the 40s, so you'll want to pack that factor 50. Bear in mind that this is also peak tourist season, so if sweaty crowds aren't for you, perhaps consider visiting in autumn (October-November) or spring (March-April), when the weather is slightly more bearable. Even in winter, daytime temperatures rarely drop below 20-22C, so it's a perfect destination for those wanting a bit of sun during January. As well as the new direct flights from East Midlands Airport, TUI offers several holiday packages for travellers looking to rediscover Sharm El Sheikh. More Trending One popular option is a seven-night stay at the 5-star TUI BLUE Sensatori Coral Sea. The all-inclusive package starts from £1,349 per person, which works out to around £192.70 per night. Both prices are based on two adults sharing a room, with flights included, departing next summer. For travellers flying from Gatwick, there's the Coral Sea Aqua Club. A seven-night all-inclusive holiday departing on Monday, June 9, 2025, costs £1,188 per person, based on two adults sharing. Most hotels in Sharm el Sheikh offer all-inclusive board options. See how list compares to 2017 Yet, the travel ban that Trump unveiled days later did not include Egypt, raising questions about the timing and purpose of the ban, which the president's critics say unfairly targets African and Muslim-majority nations. Trump requested that the State Department and other national security officials put together a list of countries for potential visa restrictions in an executive order just after taking office. But nothing came of it for months, until the Boulder attack, which he blamed on the previous administration. "We want to keep bad people out of our country. The Biden administration allowed some horrendous people," Trump said in the Oval Office, as he touted his deportation policies. Egypt has acted as a central mediator alongside the United States and Qatar in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, helping to establish a ceasefire and secure the release of prisoners and hostages. The United States had conducted joint training exercises with Egypt since 1980 and considers the Arab nation that has been ruled by Abdel Fattah El-Sisi since 2014 a regional partner. The Egyptian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The US President has announced new travel restrictions on 19 countries, which is approximately a tenth of all nations globally. From June 9, nationals from Afghanistan, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen will be prohibited from entering the United States under the new regulations. Citizens from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela will encounter partial restrictions, losing access to all immigrant visas and several non-immigrant travel options, with only a select few on special visas, such as diplomats, permitted entry into the US from these nations. Trump has cited various reasons for imposing these bans, including insufficient traveller screening, "a significant terrorist presence" within these countries, governments that are hesitant to repatriate deported nationals, or citizens who frequently overstay their visas in the US, reports the Mirror. The bans are the latest in a series of anti-immigration moves introduced by Trump, which also include a block on people coming over the southern border to claim asylum and instructing heavily armed ICE immigration officers to make raids across the country. The announcement was made in the days after an Egyptian man in Colorado was arrested and charged with carrying out an attack on a group honouring hostages held in Gaza. The US President directly linked the travel bans to the "recent terror attack", claiming that it "underscored the extreme dangers posed to our country by the entry of foreign nationals who are not properly vetted". Trump added: "We don't want them." In reality, the incident provides a convenient political reason to resurrect and expand policies that featured in Trump's first presidency, and comes after several months of build-up. In his first term, Trump was explicit about his desire to ban citizens from countries where Islam is the primary religion. At that time, he ordered a travel ban against people from seven Muslim-majority countries from coming to the US. This set of restrictions has clear echoes of the first. Made louder on Wednesday evening when Trump alluded to migration from Middle Eastern countries to Europe. "We will not let what happened in Europe happen to America," he said. Are there exemptions? Yes. If you are a national from one of the 19 "banned" countries, but have an existing visa to the US, you will be exempt from the ban, the New York Times reports. Green card holders, athletes travelling to the US for the coming World Cup and Olympics, and Afghans eligible for the Special Immigrant Visa program that was introduced following the US's invasion of the country, are also exempt. Those from the "banned" countries seeking visas through connections to US family members can continue to do so. That means those who have trips planned to the US, but already have their paperwork in order, will be able to travel. Whether they want to is a different question. There have been many reports of tourists to the US facing lengthy scrutiny at the US border since Trump's second term began, having their phones combed through and even being placed in detention for days at a time. The cooling effect is already being felt. The United States is on track to lose $12.5bn (£9.4bn) in international travel spending this year, according to a study published on Tuesday by the World Travel and Tourism Council. What if I'm a dual citizen? This is a situation a lot of Brits may find themselves in. If, for example, if you've got dual Somalian and British citizenship, you are exempt from the order. The same goes for all of the 19 countries included on the list. What if I've been to one of the banned countries? This is a little complicated, and the full answer is not yet clear. As things are now, UK passport holders can apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA), instead of getting a full visa. If, however, you're British but were in the following countries on or after March 2011, then you can't get an ESTA. The countries include: Iraq Libya North Korea Somalia Sudan Syria Yemen You cannot apply for an ESTA visa waiver if you travelled to or were in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021. However, if you fall into that camp, you can still apply for a visa. That is a lengthier process and the chances of getting rejected are higher.
