Missing mum who vanished for 60 years discovered as she shares two words
A mum who vanished for over 60 years said two words upon her shock reappearance. Back in 1962, Audrey Backeberg disappeared from the family home when she was just 20 years old and was finally confirmed to be "safe and well" last week, aged 82.
Police have since confirmed that her going missing was through "her own choice" and "not the result of any criminal activity or foul play". At the time of her going missing, her family's babysitter told authorities she had hitchhiked with Audrey to the city of Madison, Wisconsin, where the pair took a Greyhound bus to Indianapolis, Indiana, reports the Mirror.
When they got there, Audrey walked around the corner from the bus stop and was never heard from again, until now. When she was discovered by a detective living many decades into her new life she is said to have told them she had 'no regrets'.
According to the Audrey Project, an organisation which documents over 16,000 "cold case" missing persons reports in the US, Audrey had married husband Ronald Backberg when she was "about fifteen years old" - but had experienced a "troubled" marriage surrounded by "allegations of abuse".
The babysitter had claimed that Audrey had disappeared in Indianapolis of her own accord, but this set up a row with members of her family, who "insisted she would never have abandoned her children."
After more than six decades of mystery, answers started to come Sauk County Sheriff's Office assigned a detective to cold case earlier this year. Detective Isaac Hanson combed through case files and evidence, as well as re-interviewing key witnesses in the case - but it was her sister's Ancestry.com account that eventually led him to her.
He local news station WISN: "That was pretty key in locating death records, census reports, all kinds of data.
"So I called the local sheriff's department, said, 'Hey, there's this lady living at this address. Do you guys have somebody, you can just go pop in?'
"Ten minutes later, she called me, and we talked for 45 minutes."
He added that she seemed to have "moved on from things", and sounded happy and "confident" in her decision to flee many years ago.
A statement from Sheriff Chip Meister said: "Earlier this year, the case was assigned to a Sheriff's Office Detective for a comprehensive review as part of an ongoing examination of cold case files. Through diligent investigative work, which included a thorough re-evaluation of all case files and evidence, combined with re-interviewing witnesses and uncovering new insights.
"The Sheriff's Office is now able to report that Audrey Backeberg is alive and well and currently resides out of State. Further investigation has revealed that Ms. Backeberg's disappearance was by her own choice and not the result of any criminal activity or foul play.
"The Sheriff's Office would like to acknowledge the work of Investigators, both past and present. Despite the significant challenges that many cold cases present, this resolution underscores both the importance of continued work and the dedication of the Sheriff's Office to providing answers to families and the community."

And he stole £1,500 worth of Jellycat plush toys after breaking into a shop in Barnes, south west London, last month on July 21. He appeared at Isleworth Crown Court, via video link, from HMP Wandsworth today. He admitted four counts of burglary as well as one count of criminal damage. The former reality TV star previously pleaded guilty to three counts of burglary at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court. He entered those pleas again today. Graeme Logan, defending, said: "Marco disputes the £43,000 figure relating to criminal damage. The figure appears to be an amalgamation for property stolen and damage to the property. That figure is disputed. I ask for seven days to submit that plea. With the allegation of robbery on May 25, which Mr White denies, an alternative plea of theft will be offered." Judge Edward Connell said: "There will be a hearing for that robbery charge at Isleworth Crown Court on September 2 this year. If the Crown does not accept it, a trial will be set for March 16 next year. I am going to adjourn your case for two weeks. You have pled guilty to serious offences both in the magistrates' court and today, and at some point you will have to be sentenced for that." The former Celebrity Big Brother star had only been released from prison two months before burglary, and will be sentenced on 29 November after pleading guilty to one count of burglary. His downfall began in 2016, just days after he was voted out of the Celebrity Big Brother house following shocking behaviour with his housemates, which prompted complaints from viewers and a formal warning. In one incident, he asked Laura Carter to 'choke him' as she straddled him on the sofa, and was reprimanded when she later complained to producers about his 'wandering hands'. Days after being the first celebrity to be booted off the show, Marco Jr appeared in court after being stopped by police driving under the influence of cocaine. In January 2019, he was convicted and fined after unleashing a shocking tirade at police officers as they arrested him for being drunk and disorderly in a train station. Seven months later, he was taken to a police station 'kicking and screaming' after smashing windows during a furious row with his chef dad Marco Sr, and in 2022, he was jailed for 18 months after being convicted of 14 offences including racially aggravated abuse, heroin possession and carrying a knife. In May last year, he was arrested after burgling an upscale deli in Bath, and was captured on CCTV smashing the window with a champagne bottle. He stole £250 from the cafe, which was featured on the Netflix show Bridgerton, and was identified by police after his trousers fell down during his escape, revealing his distinctive tattoos on his legs and rear end. Meredith Kercher's family lawyer slams Amanda Knox over new Disney murder drama
Francesco Maresca, the lawyer for the family of Meredith Kercher, has expressed his disgust at a new eight-part show dramatising the Brit student's horrific 2007 murder Meredith Kercher's family lawyer has launched a blistering broadside against Amanda Knox following the release of the American's new Disney series. The 38-year-old has executive-produced KJ Steinberg's eight-parter, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, which is based closely on her memoir. Actress Grace Van Patten plays Knox in the Disney-owned Hulu series. Now, following the show's New York premiere on Tuesday, for which the American appeared on the red carpet grinning alongside Monica Lewinsky, attorney Francesco Maresca has hit out. He told the Mirror: 'The important thing is that Amanda Knox clearly wants this case to continue. It would be nice and dignified to watch a program or TV show where everything is reconstructed, remembering the life and smile of poor Meredith." Mr Maresca added: 'Instead, once again, we have to witness an attempt to reshuffle the cards, and where the trailer states, 'Amanda fights tirelessly to prove her innocence and regain her freedom'. Once again, the focus is on Knox.' When the show was first announced last year, Meredith's sister Stephanie said: 'It is difficult to understand how this serves any purpose.' At the time, Mr Maresca said Knox's projects continued to be 'inappropriate and disrespectful towards the memory of Meredith,' claiming the Perugia trial had become a vehicle for Knox to monetise her notoriety. 'Mrs Knox, after so many years, should respect the silence and memory,' he said, as filming took place in the Italian town where the 21-year-old was killed. In November 2007, Leeds University student Meredith was sexually assaulted before her throat was slashed and she was stabbed 47 times while studying in Perugia. Her flatmate Knox and her then-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were initially convicted of her murder along with drifter Rudy Guede. The couple were found guilty in 2009 but freed on appeal two years later. Their guilty verdict was reinstated in 2014 but quashed by Italy's top court in March 2015. Mum-of-two Knox has since capitalised on her experience, writing a book, recording numerous podcasts, and making several speaking appearances, some in Italy. Despite the objections from locals in Perugia and those close to Meredith, Knox pressed ahead with the series, with Lewinsky acting as executive producer. Their initial friendship, formed in 2017 at a speaking event two years after Italy's highest court cleared Knox and Sollecito, has developed into a professional partnership. This week, ahead of the premiere, she also spoke about explaining the case to her four-year-old daughter, Eureka, telling her: 'It's very simple. When Mommy was young, Mommy went to Italy, and she made friends and she had fun, but then someone hurt her friend, and the police thought Mommy hurt her friend, and so they put Mommy in jail. "Mommy was in jail for a long time, and she was very sad. But then one day, Mommy proved that she was innocent, and she got to go home, and then she met your daddy and had you and lived happily ever after.' Critics say the Hulu series and Knox's repeated public retellings amount to a relentless attempt to monetise a tragedy in which she was tangentially involved, rather than a genuine reckoning. Others have questioned whether such projects serve any purpose beyond self-promotion, noting the continued pain for Meredith's family and the sensationalism of revisiting the widely reported case. Guede was released after serving 13 years and has since been investigated for allegedly physically and sexually assaulting a former girlfriend since being freed.
