PM Modi to visit Bihar on Friday, projects worth over Rs 7,000 crore to be launched
Tight security measures are in place at Gandhi Maidan in Motihari town, the district headquarters, where Modi is expected to reach in the forenoon and share the stage with Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and a number of Union ministers.

"All arrangements have been made for the public at the venue of the rally, which is expected to attract around five lakh people," East Champaran District Magistrate Saurabh Jorwal said.
"People are likely to come from far-off places. As such, parking arrangements have been made for as many as 10,000 buses. The public will be allowed entry into the gigantic canopy through 12 gates, two of which are specially for women," the DM added.
Superintendent of Police Swarn Prabhat said that more than 10,000 police personnel have been deployed in the town.
They will ensure proper law and order and traffic, under the supervision of 10 IPS officers and 50 officials of the Deputy SP rank, he said.

"The entry into the canopy will be allowed from 6 am, and all entry points will be sealed after 9 am, over an hour in advance of the PM's scheduled time of arrival," he said.
State BJP president Dilip Jaiswal said this will be the PM's 53rd visit to the state, "which shows that Bihar is high on Modi's list of priorities".
The development projects launched by him will give a boost to NDA ahead of assembly polls due in just a few months, he said.
Of the development projects to be launched, those relating to Railways would be worth Rs 5,385 crore.
According to a statement issued by the Railways, these include doubling of the 256-km Darbhanga-Narkatiaganj at Rs 4,079 crore, and Darbhanga-Thalwara and Samastipur-Rambhadrapur lines at Rs 585 crore.
Four Amrit Bharat Express trains, all passing through the state and two connecting Bihar with Delhi, will also be flagged by the Prime Minister on the occasion.
In addition, road and highways projects worth Rs 1,173 crore will be launched by Modi, who will also give away Rs 162 crore to 40,000 beneficiaries of the PM Awas Yojana (Gramin) and extend "Rs 400 crore community funding" for 61,500 self-help groups.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly Tejashwi Yadav, said, "Tomorrow, when the PM will be in Bihar, we hope he will have a few words for soaring crime rate in the state."
"In every rally on Bihar's soil, Modi makes it a point to cry hoarse about return of 'jungle raj' if the RJD-led coalition comes to power. He should acknowledge that 'jungle raj' has already arrived. In fact, it has been there during the 20 years the state has been under NDA rule," Yadav alleged.
Congress spokesperson Ragini Nayak said that the people of Bihar have been fed up with the "antics of the Prime Minister" during his innumerable visits.
"They still remember the rhetorical flourish with which he had pledged Rs 1.25 lakh crore assistance to the state way back in 2015. Nothing came of it," he added.
"We would also like to remind the PM of his promise to the people of Motihari, in 2014, that upon assuming power, he would get the area's sick sugar mills revived and enjoy tea sweetened with local produce. The people of Motihari will serve him tea tomorrow, but it will be bland, like his own unfulfilled promises," the Congress leader said.
Nayak also alleged that "booth capturing" has given way to "voters' list capturing" as the special intensive revision was being undertaken in the state by the Election Commission "to steal the assembly polls in favour of the BJP".

Govt aiming to take number of 'Lakhpati Didis' to 20 mn by Aug 15: Chouhan
Union Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday said 1.5 crore women have already become Lakhpati Didis in India and his ministry is aiming to take the figure to 20 million by August 15. 'Lakhpati Didi' refers to a woman member of a Self-Help Group (SHG) who earns an income of Rs 1 lakh or more per year. Chouhan visited the Indian Council of Agricultural Research - Directorate of Groundnut Research in Junagadh town of Gujarat, where he reviewed its activities and interacted with farmers and Lakhpati Didis of SHGs, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) said in a release. In his address, Chouhan said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a resolve to make every woman a Lakhpati Didi. "Why should any woman remain poor? This campaign is being run across India. Till now, 1.5 crore women have already become Lakhpati Didis and my department is constantly taking steps to make 20 million women Lakhpati Didis by August 15," he said. In Junagadh, there are women who are already earning more than Rs 10 lakh per year, he said. "Women living in rural areas have proven that they can do wonders if they are provided with some opportunity, training and bank linkage. These women are the true torchbearers of 'Vocal for Local'. I am confident that these women will build a Viksit Bharat as envisioned by PM Modi," said the minister, who also handles the Rural Development portfolio. Chouhan lauded women for their contribution. "Keep pushing forward with courage. PM Modi himself stands with you to ensure all possible support. Plans are underway to increase women's participation in the industrial sector. The hard work of women will help build a Viksit Bharat as envisioned by the PM," he said. Stating that agriculture is still the backbone of Indian economy and for him, the Union minister said serving farmers is equal to worshipping God. "I don't just sit at my Delhi office. Instead, I visit agricultural fields, interact with farmers and try to provide a solution to their problems. Our PM also gives highest priority to agriculture," he said in his address. Earlier during the day, Chouhan offered prayers at the famous Somnath temple in Gir Somnath district and then visited Devaliya Safari Park near Gir National Park at Sasan.

Anti-sacrilege bill: Punjab Speaker forms 15-member select committee led by Inderbir Nijjar to consult stakeholders
IANS After three hours of intense debate of allegations and counter allegations, the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday unanimously decided to refer the highly emotive Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scriptures Bill of 2025 to a select committee for consultation with all stakeholders. Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Saturday formed a 15-member select committee of the House for wider consultations with stakeholders on an anti-sacrilege bill. The move came days after the Punjab Assembly unanimously decided to refer the Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scripture(s) Bill, 2025, proposing punishment up to life imprisonment for sacrilege acts against religious scriptures, to a select committee of the House. The panel will submit its report on the bill within six months. The 15-member panel will be headed by AAP MLA from Amritsar South and former minister Inderbir Singh Nijjar, according to a notification issued by the Punjab Vidhan Sabha secretariat on Saturday. The members of the committee are -- AAP MLAs Ajay Gupta, Amandeep Kaur Arora, Inderjit Kaur Mann, Jagdeep Kamboj, Neena Mittal, Baljinder Kaur, Budh Ram, Bram Shanker Jimpa, Madan Lal Bagga, and Mohammad Jamil Ur Rahman; BJP MLA Jangi Lal Mahajan, Congress legislators Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa and Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal; and Shiromani Akali Dal legislator Manpreet Singh Ayali. Punjab Advocate General Maninderjit Singh Bedi will be the ex-officio member of the committee. The anti-sacrilege bill was introduced on July 14 in the House. The bill mandates strict punishment, extending up to life imprisonment, for the desecration of holy scriptures, including the Guru Granth Sahib, Bhagavad Gita, Bible and Quran. According to the bill, any person found guilty of sacrilege may face imprisonment ranging from 10 years to life. The guilty shall also be liable to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh, which may extend up to Rs 10 lakh. Those attempting to commit the offence may be sentenced to three to five years and shall also be liable to pay a fine which may extend up to Rs 3 lakh. Individuals found abetting the crime will be punished in accordance with the offence committed. Under the Bill, offence means any sacrilege, damage, destruction, defacing, disfiguring, de-colouring, de-filling, decomposing, burning, breaking or tearing of any holy scripture or part thereof. Sacrilege has been an emotive issue in Punjab. There has been a demand from various quarters for stringent punishment for sacrilege after the incidents of desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib in 2015 in Faridkot. In the police firing at anti-sacrilege protesters in October 2015, two persons were killed in Behbal Kalan, while some persons were injured at Kotkapura in Faridkot.
