Sorry, sorry Man United
PETALING JAYA: Myanmari winger Maung Maung Lwin was in top flight for the Asean All-Stars when his lone goal in the 72nd minute downed English Premier League giants Manchester United 1-0 in the Maybank Challenge Cup match at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
The Asean All-Stars were truly the better side, producing some direct and effective plays, and creating at least five decent chances.
The best two came in the sixth and 26th minutes.
The first one was a beautifully teed ball by striker Abdel Kader Coulibaly, which found winger Nguyen Hai Long, but his shot was inches off the post.
Then midfielder Sandro Reyes got the best chance in the 28th, only to see his stinging drive saved by Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana.
Realising the need for movement and efficiency, Ruben Amorim was forced to make four changes by bringing on young guns Shea Lacey, Daniel Armer, Sekou Kone and Jaydan Kamason for Jack Moorhouse, Harry Maguire, Casemiro and Diogo Dalot.
The changes ignited some hope as United got their first best chance of the game when midfielder Kobbie Mainoo unleashed a shot but it was palmed away by All-Stars goalkeeper Patiwat Khammai.
Then there were two to three more chances, but they were nullified by Patiwat and co.
The All-Stars, led by Vietnam coach Kim Sang-sik, also brought on reinforcements by making a double substitution, bringing off Coulibaly and Kealey Adamson for wingback Adib Abd Raop and striker Bounpachan Bounkong respectively.
The game was 0-0 in the first-half, and in the second-half, both sides made numerous changes but the highlight was the introduction of United captain and midfielder Bruno Fernandes.
And the Portuguese midfielder nearly made an impact in the 58th minute but his volley was inches over the bar.
The All-Stars though took the lead when substitute winger Maung Lwin, who is the Myanmar national team captain, finished off a superb through pass from midfielder Adrian Segricic in the 72nd minute.
United tried to mount a fightback but the All-Stars defence proved to be a solid unit by stopping numerous goalscoring chances.

Zii Jia's comeback on the cards – but will he go through with it?
Long-term issue: Lee Zii Jia had been struggling with a left ankle ligament injury since December last year. PETALING JAYA: Professional men's singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia is set to make an appearance at the World Championships in Paris from Aug 25-31 after a four-month absence. Based on an update from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on July 29, Zii Jia has confirmed his participation in the tournament after receiving an invitation from the world body. However, should the former world No. 2 change his mind, he still has time until Aug 12 to do so. Zii Jia had been struggling with a left ankle ligament injury since December last year, and has only competed in two tournaments this year, the Orleans Masters and All-England in March before the injury flared up again. His management, Team LZJ, had successfully secured a protected ranking for Zii Jia, and he initially planned to return at the US Open in June, but had to withdraw as he had yet to fully recover. For the same reason, Zii Jia also missed the China Open and Japan Open, which ended just a few weeks ago. The former All-England champion recently sparked concern after posting a series of unsettling sketches on his social media, prompting fans to question his mental well-being. While some viewed it as a form of artistic expression, others believe it could be a reflection of his frustration and demoralisation stemming from his prolonged absence from the court. Meanwhile, if he competes in the World Championships this time, he will be joined by another compatriot, Leong Jun Hao, who will be making his debut in the tournament. Paris proved to be a memorable venue for Zii Jia last year, as he captured a bronze medal at the Olympic Games. In the women's singles event, Malaysia will also be represented by two shuttlers, Goh Jin Wei and K. Letshanaa. All players will find out their opponents and potential path to the podium when the World Championships draw is held on Aug 13.

Azriyn-Wee Kiong stage late fightback against Indonesian duo
KUALA LUMPUR: Unforced errors almost ruined independent pair Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong's run at the Macau Open on Thursday, before they recovered to set up an all-Malaysian quarter-final showdown against Wan Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King. World No. 23 Azriyn-Wee Kiong were stretched to the limit by Indonesia's world No. 136 Putra Erwiansyah-Daniel Marvino before securing a 21-14, 15-21, 21-17 win in a 53-minute second-round match. Wee Kiong said that they cannot afford to do the same in their maiden clash against Arif–Roy King, who are on a high after receiving a late BWF invite on Tuesday to compete at the World Championships. World No. 24 Arif-Roy King checked into the last eight with a 21-18, 21-18 win over India's No. 35 Pruthvi Roy-Sai Prateek. "Today, we actually had a difficult time against the Indonesian pair and made some unforced errors. Hopefully, this won't happen tomorrow," said the 35-year-old Wee Kiong. "We have to focus on regaining our rhythm." The veteran pair had been on a roll prior to the Macau Open, as they made the quarter-finals of the Japan Open - their best result in a Super 750 event - a fortnight ago, before losing in three games to world No. 7 compatriots Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun. They then exited the second round of the China Open last week. Meanwhile, world No. 52 Choong Hon Jian-Haikal Nazri put their injury troubles aside by reaching their first quarter-final after beating Japan's world No. 90 Tori Aizawa-Daisuke Sano 21-14, 21-19. Hon Jian-Haikal will play either India's world No. 9 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty or Japan's world 89 Kakeru Kumagai-Hiroki Nishi in the last eight. Goh V Shem - a former world No. 1 and 2016 Olympic silver medallist with Wee Kiong - reached the last eight with his South Korean partner Cho Sol Gyu. Playing in their fifth tournament together, world No. 148 V Shem–Sol Gyu defeated Indonesia's world No. 50 Rahmat Hidayat-Yeremia Rambitan 21-18, 21-18 to set up a last-eight showdown against world No. 8 Sabar Karyaman-Moh Reza Isfahani of Indonesia on Friday. However, independent world No. 69 Chia Weijie-Lwi Sheng Hao's run came to an end after losing to Hong Kong's world No. 106 Hung Kuey Chun-Lui Chun Wai 15-21, 21-13, 21-18 in the second round. In the women's doubles, Malaysia's campaign ended in the second round after world No. 18 Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing lost 21-15, 22-24, 21-15 to Taiwan's world No. 135 Lin Chih Chun-Lin Wan Ching, while 224th-ranked Cheng Su Hui-Tan Zhing Yi lost 21-17, 21-17 to 12th-ranked Taiwan pair Hsieh Pei Shan-Hung En Tzu. Women's singles world No. 47 Goh Jin Wei stretched China's world No. 5 Chen Yu Fei before suffering a 14-21, 21-9, 21-18 defeat in the second round.

Zii Jia accepts Paris World Championships invite after injury-hit season
KUALA LUMPUR: Shuttler Lee Zii Jia is set to make his long-awaited return at the World Championships in Paris from Aug 25-31 after four months out with injury. The former world No. 2 has confirmed his participation in the tournament, according to the Badminton World Federation's latest update on July 29. He received an invitation under a protected ranking status secured by his management, Team LZJ. However, he still has until Aug 12 to pull out should he decide otherwise. Zii Jia has been battling a left ankle ligament injury since December and has only played in two tournaments this year - the Orleans Masters and All-England in March, before the problem flared up again. He was initially slated to return at the US Open in June but was forced to withdraw as he had yet to fully recover. The same issue also saw him miss the China Open and Japan Open earlier this month. The 2021 All-England champion recently sparked concern after posting a series of cryptic sketches on social media, prompting fans to speculate about his mental health. While some interpreted it as artistic expression, others feared it reflected his frustration and emotional toll from the prolonged layoff. If he goes ahead with the Paris appearance, he will be joined by compatriot and world No. 24 Leong Jun Hao, who is making his World Championships debut. Zii Jia, now ranked world No. 35, will be hoping for another memorable outing in the French capital, having won a bronze medal there at last year's Olympic Games. Malaysia will also have two representatives in the women's singles - Goh Jin Wei and K. Letshanaa. The draw for the tournament will be held on Aug 13.
