"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"
That's certainly how I felt about the Proteas Men's team.
Head coach Shukri Conrad has been responsible for all selections since his appointment and the ICC World Test mace perched splendidly in Cricket SA's trophy cabinet at their Illovo office is the result.
Conrad's coaching philosophy has fostered an environment where honesty and open communication thrive. Players are able to express themselves with clarity regarding their roles being a cornerstone of the team's culture.
Unlike in previous years, where players were often left in the dark following squad announcements, the current setup allows individuals to gauge their standing within the team's future without the fear of unpleasant surprises.

This is a refreshing change that strengthens the collective resolve of the squad moving forward.
So, why then appoint a Convenor of Selectors?
This is not a slight on Pat Moroney, the incoming COS, who boasts all the experience of having worked within CSA's structures since 2001, but yet one cannot help but wonder about the necessity of such a position given the harmony achieved under Conrad's direct oversight.
The only explanation I can fathom is Conrad's increased workload now that he has been appointed all-format coach.
As solely Test coach, Conrad had the time to attend domestic matches and even coach South Africa 'A' on various occasions to formulate that unique rapport with the players.
I vividly recall Conrad spending time at Western Province Cricket Club closely monitoring the likes of Corbin Bosch and Codi Yusuf whilst playing for South Africa 'A' against their England counterparts last year.
Both seamers have since progressed to make their Proteas Test debuts with aplomb.
However, with Conrad now set to spend extensive periods travelling internationally, the need for an extra set of eyes roving domestically may be required.
When asked his thoughts on having to 'deal with' a prospective incoming COS back in May, Conrad stated:
'I don't think the words 'dealing with a convenor' is the right narrative we want to project. Hopefully it will be a like-minded person who has South African cricket and, more importantly, the Proteas as first prize all the time.'
But he also went further: 'The last thing you want is for someone to come in with a completely different agenda.
'It's important for players to know exactly where they stand, who's accountable, who's the sole voice who takes responsibility, because I don't like collective responsibility.
'Cricket has never been a democracy. Whoever the fall guy is, he takes the rap.'
It is fortunate then that this new Government of Cricket Unity formed between Conrad and Moroney has travelled a long road previously.
Moroney was the SA U19 COS when Conrad was head coach of the Junior Proteas a few years back.
It was this combination that provided the platform for Dewald Brevis to take centre stage at the ICC U19 World Cup in the Caribbean in 2022.
Equally, Moroney and Conrad sung from the same hymn sheet when they picked an unknown 16-year-old by the name of Kwena Maphaka for that self-same ICC U19 World Cup, which paved the way for the left-arm seamer to explode two years later at the next edition on South African soil.
Moroney's in-depth knowledge of fellow teenager Lhuan-dre Pretorius's journey will also help Conrad manage the precocious talent moving forward.
Cricket may not be a Democracy, but perhaps there is a place for Epistocracy - where some are better equipped to make decisions than others due to their knowledge, understanding, or competence - within the Proteas Men's team.

British and Irish Lions outmuscle Australia to win first Test 27-19

BRISBANE - A relentless British and Irish Lions were ferocious in attack and solid in defence to edge a dogged Australia and win a bruising first Test 27-19 in Brisbane on Saturday. The tourists repeatedly laid siege to the Wallabies line for a 17-5 lead at the break before soaking up second-half pressure to bank the win with both sides scoring three tries. A late Australia try meant the scoreline flattered a poor Wallabies side, with the Lions never looking in trouble after opening up a 24-5 lead shortly after half-time. Played in front of 52,229 fans at a sold-out Suncorp Stadium, many wearing the Red of the Lions, the tourists proved too strong for a brave, but outgunned Australian outfit. With Scottish fly-half Finn Russell pulling the strings in the backs and outstanding loose forwards Tom Curry and Tadhg Beirne dominating up front, the Lions showed why they went into the Test as firm favourites. But despite being behind for all of the match, the Wallabies didn't roll over and fears of a huge defeat never materialised. The Lions got away to an almost perfect start, Beirne winning a penalty off the kick-off and Russell slotting an easy three points. The Wallabies barely had the ball in the opening 10 minutes, the Lions dominating attacking possession to give the sea of red jerseys in the crowd plenty to cheer about. The home side were made to pay when inside centre Sione Tuipulotu ran on to a beautiful long pass from Russell to cross next to the posts and give the Lions a 10-0 lead in as many minutes. The Lions continued to dominate possession and territory over the opening 30 minutes and it was almost a surprise when the Wallabies hit back. Wing Max Jorgensen came away with the ball after a Jake Gordon kick inside the Lions 22 and beat Russell's despairing covering tackle to score in the corner. Tom Lynagh's conversion attempt went wide and the Lions led 10-5 eight minutes before the break. - Sheehan strikes - The Lions were straight back on the attack and their intentions were clear when captain Maro Itoje turned down two kickable penalties in a row, opting to go for a try. They missed out the first time but were rewarded moments later when Curry barged over, giving the Lions a 17-5 lead at half-time. The Wallabies needed to start the second half well, but instead it was the Lions who struck first, hooker Dan Sheehan finishing off a Hugo Keenan break and crossing in the corner. Russell's sideline conversion gave the visitors a commanding 24-5 lead. The Wallabies thought they had struck back after some sustained pressure when Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii barged over next to the posts, but referee Ben O'Keeffe ruled he had not released the ball on the ground and the try was disallowed. With the match slipping away, replacement Wallaby flanker Carlo Tizzano burrowed over and Ben Donaldson's conversion made it 24-12 with 12 minutes remaining. A penalty from Lions replacement fly-half Marcus Smith right in front gave the Lions a safety net at 27-12. Wallabies reserve scrum-half Tate McDermott scored a consolation try just before the siren. But it was too little too late and the Lions now head to the Melbourne Cricket Ground for next Saturday's second Test 1-0 up in the three-match series. acd/dh By Andrew Dent

Next Stay Close ✕ Rashford is among five players to have informed United they wish to explore a future away from Old Trafford, where he came through the academy and scored 138 goals in 426 first-team appearances. The England international admitted he was "ready for a new challenge" in December and last month revealed he would like to play alongside Barcelona's teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal. Rashford has trained away from Amorim's first-team squad since pre-season began. Barcelona sporting director Deco said in May that he liked Rashford and head coach Hansi Flick described the forward as a "fantastic player". Rashford does not have a squad number at United having lost the 10 shirt to Brazil forward Matheus Cunha, who arrived at Old Trafford during the current transfer window along with left-back Diego Leon. Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo is expected to join them after United finally struck a deal with Brentford worth an initial £65 million ($87 million). United will likely have to fund any further deals through departures. Even if Rashford were to leave initially on loan, the savings on the wage bill would be significant. Barcelona had looked set to sign Spain winger Nico Williams but the 23-year-old recently signed a new 10-year contract at Athletic Bilbao. The Catalan giants won a league and cup double last season -- Flick's first campaign at the club. AFP Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel.

Runners sweat out their hearts at the Mandela Day Walk & Run 2025

In celebration of Nelson Mandela's enduring legacy, runners of all ages and backgrounds gathered at the iconic DP World Wanderers Stadium on July 19 for the Mandela Day Walk & Run 2025. The event featured 5km, 10km, and 21.1km distances, attracting elite athletes, fun-runners, and families united by a shared spirit of patriotism and remembrance. Read more: Braving the chill at Bryanston Parkrun Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture Gayton Mackenzie led the 21.1km half-marathon and brought both humour and heartfelt pride to his post-race address. 'Parliament set a new rule this morning that you can't pass a minister during the race, so please be law-abiding citizens,' he joked to roaring laughter. 'South Africa is a great country. We are all children of Nelson Mandela. There's Mandela in all of us. We are the greatest country in the world, best in rugby, cricket, and soccer. Just look at Bafana Bafana… 19 games unbeaten.' Rebaone Obotseng (22), of the Distance Run Club, clinched back-to-back victories in the 10km race, despite feeling under the weather and not being fully prepared. 'I'm happy that I got the win today. It's my second time winning this race. I had to come back and defend my title. I wasn't feeling well because I ran last week, and I didn't prepare specifically for this one, but I gave it everything I had left.' Obotseng added that this year's route was tougher than expected. 'It's quite hilly. I thought I had memorised the route, but following the lead car as it twisted and turned, I kept asking myself: 'When am I finishing?'. I was on pace for a better time at 8km, but the last two hills got to my head. Still, I maintained the pace because I had already gapped the field.' He finished in just over 32 minutes, a time he was disappointed with. 'To run a good race at altitude, you have to be under 30. That's the benchmark.' In the 21.1km event, 27-year-old Honest Mathe, from Waterfall City Athletic Club, made a triumphant return to racing after a three-month break. 'This was my first race in months, and I've always wanted to run it. It was challenging, but the atmosphere, the crowd, the water points… It was fantastic. Honestly, it's one of the best races I've ever done in my life.' Mathe used the race as preparation for the upcoming Sanlam Marathon, with the hilly course giving him a clear picture of where he needs to improve. 'I've been doing long runs, but not enough speed work. Today challenged me, but I told myself: 'Push through and just maintain pace'.' @caxtonjoburgnorth Thousands of runners from all ages filled the streets around DP World Wanderers Stadium on July 19, 2025, for the annual Mandela Day Walk & Run. #DPWorldWonderers #Mandeladay ♬ original sound Caxton Joburg North He praised the community support that carried him through the toughest sections. 'I came here just for fun, but the crowd, and the people who know me, kept cheering me on. That energy made me push harder.' Mathe added that the Mandela Day Walk & Run is more than just a competitive race; it's a moment for reflection, celebration, and unity. 'It's not about being the fastest; it's about showing up, being part of something bigger. Everyone should come, slow or fast; it's about Mandela, about doing something for a cause.'
