Two friends die after car crashes into tree in Klebang
Melaka Tengah police chief ACP Christopher Patit said the incident occurred at around 6.45am and the victims were identified as the driver of the Proton Wira, Muhammad Nur Zamani Mohd Nazery, 28, and his passenger, Muhammad Haziq, 25.
'Initial investigations found that the car, driven by Muhammad Nur Zamani, was travelling from Melaka town towards Bukit Rambai via Jalan Persisiran Pantai Klebang. Upon reaching the scene, the vehicle is believed to have skidded, struck a road cone, spun out of control, and crashed into a tree on the road divider,' he said in a statement today.
'As a result of the accident, both victims sustained severe injuries to the head, body, and arms, and were pronounced dead at the scene.'
He added that the bodies have been sent to Melaka Hospital for post-mortem, while the vehicle has been taken to the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (PUSPAKOM) for further assessment.
Meanwhile, Melaka Tengah Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Operations Commander, Senior Fire Officer I Mohd Zahery Mohd Zailani, said they received an emergency call at 6.51am and arrived at the scene nine minutes later.
'Upon arrival, we found the driver trapped inside the vehicle, while his friend had been thrown out of the car,' he said.
He added that the situation was brought under control by 7.18am, with eight personnel involved in the rescue operation. — Bernama

Bukit Aman task force takes over probe into Zara Qairina's death
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — A special nine-member task force from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been deployed to Sabah to take over the investigation into Zara Qairina Mahathir's case. In a statement, the Office of the Inspector-General of Police Secretariat (Corporate Communications) said the deployment is part of the Royal Malaysia Police's (PDRM) commitment to ensure a transparent, professional, and thorough investigation. As such, we urge the public to allow the authorities to carry out their duties professionally and to refrain from making any speculation that could disrupt the investigation process,' the statement read. Last Friday, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) announced that the remains of 13-year-old Zara Qairina needed to be exhumed to enable a post-mortem to be conducted. The AGC stated that there is a need for further investigation to be carried out by PDRM to ensure that all aspects of the case can be thoroughly examined. The exhumation of the 13-year-old's body at the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery, Kampung Mesapol was done on Saturday, and subsequently transported to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu. The remains were reburied at the same cemetery early this morning. Zara Qairina was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on July 17. The student had been taken to the hospital after being found severely injured and unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory in Papar at 4am on July 16. — Bernama

Body of Myanmar ship crewman who fell into Saratok river found, partially eaten by aquatic animals
SARATOK, Aug 11 — The body of a Myanmar crew member who fell into Sungai Krian last Friday has been found at Lubuk Petan, Kampung Kupang, here. The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre said in a statement that the body of the victim, Thu Htoo Aung, 20, was found in an incomplete state. 'At 12.23pm today, the operation team led by Nasir Drahman received information from villagers who had found a floating body in the Lubuk Petan river,' the statement said. It added that firemen and police personnel brought the body to a nearby jetty for identification. 'Police confirmed that the body was that of the missing crew member. When found, only the lower half of the body, from the waist to the feet, remained, believed to be due to bites from aquatic animals,' it said. The search and rescue operation for the victim was called off at 1.40pm. The victim, who was wearing brown trousers and short rubber boots, was reported to have fallen into the river from the vessel Moi Soon 2, which was moored at Wharf Batu Pekan, Saratok, on August 8, at about 9.30am. — Bernama pic

No one will be spared if bullying or criminal conduct found in UTM Palapes cadet's death, says higher education minister
SEMENYIH, Aug 11 — The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) has assured that no individual will be protected if investigations into the death of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin uncover elements of bullying or criminal conduct. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the special committee investigating the 22-year-old Reserve Officer Training Unit (Palapes) cadet's death is expected to complete its report soon. 'I have directed UTM to take all necessary measures and fully cooperate with the investigation. There will be no attempt to shield anyone if wrongdoing is found,' he told reporters after visiting Syamsul Haris' mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, at her home here today. Also present was UTM vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim. Zambry also noted that priority should be given to expediting the committee's report while ensuring that the family's concerns are addressed. Syamsul Haris, a second-semester Bachelor of Cyber Security student and the eldest of three siblings, died under unclear and suspicious circumstances while undergoing Palapes training at the Army Combat Training Centre (Pulada) in Ulu Tiram, Johor. He began training on July 26, which was scheduled to end on August 3. Earlier, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin announced the formation of a joint investigation committee comprising the Ministries of Defence, Higher Education and Home Affairs. The family has called for a transparent and fair investigation, including a second autopsy, following allegations by Ummu Haiman Bee that her son's body showed bruises and injuries consistent with physical assault rather than a seizure. 'I want a transparent investigation. There were wounds on his chest, as if he was stabbed or struck with an object. His eyes were bruised. I strongly believe there was foul play, that he was beaten, tortured and assaulted until he died,' she said.
