Ideas to brighten up Pride Month in Metro Detroit

Axios02-06-2025

It's June, which means the summer sun is finally here — as are LGBTQ+ pride events.
There's so much to do across the region and in Michigan, from festivals to sweet treats and vendor markets. Here are some suggestions.
🥘 Patronize an LGBTQ+-owned local business. Visit Detroit recently posted a list, including La Feria in Midtown, Detroit Vegan Soul in northwest Detroit, Not Sorry Goods in Ferndale and GiGi's on the west side.
👠 See drag artists perform at Motor City Pride in Hart Plaza. Afterward, grab some fresh-squeezed lemonade and Pride Month swag.
Saturday, 1pm-9pm; Sunday, 12:30pm-7pm. $6.
🍻 Say cheers to a Pride-themed bar crawl around Greektown, with themed drinks, specials, live music and dancing.
June 21 from 5-10pm. $23.
😄 Join an evening of comedy in Ferndale to fundraise for the nonprofit Ruth Ellis Center.
Sunday, 7-10pm. $30.
June 22, 1-6pm. Free!

We Wanna Know Your Favorite Queer Book Of All Time

Happy Pride month, y'all! In honor of celebrating all things queer, I have a very, very important question for you (and for my neverending TBR list, which is, admittedly, mostly gay). What's your all-time favorite LGBTQ+ book? Perhaps you, like me, opened up The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid one day to see what all the hype was about and absolutely fell in love with it (and recommend it to all of your sapphic friends, obviously). Or maybe you picked up a copy of Elliot Page's memoir, Pageboy, and felt like he unzipped your skull, peaked into your brain, and wrote you own thoughts in the pages of the book. Whether it's fiction, nonfiction, a graphic novel, or anything of the sort, we wanna hear about it! In the comments below or via this anonymous form, tell us the LGBTQ+ book you read, loved, and can't recommend enough, and a little bit about why you feel that way. Your submission just might end up in a future BuzzFeed Community post!

Miley Cyrus faces backlash for joking about bringing JoJo Siwa ‘back out' of the closet

She can't stop, she won't stop. Miley Cyrus is taking heat on social media for making a joke about JoJo Siwa's sexuality in a video message that played at World Pride over the weekend. 'Oh, my God, I haven't been in here since sixth grade,' Cyrus, 32, said from inside a closet in the clip. Advertisement 9 Miley Cyrus arrives at the 2025 Tribeca Festival in New York. Ouzounova / 'Enjoy coming out of the closet if this Pride is the time for you,' the singer continued. 'It shouldn't be a month — it should be a year, it should be infinite.' Cyrus concluded, 'I'm going back inside to get more pretzels and find JoJo Siwa and bring her back out.' Advertisement 9 JoJo Siwa arrives at Capital Radio Studios in London on June 2. The pair have since confirmed their relationship after Siwa dumped her partner, Kath Ebbs. Cyrus — who joined the LGBTQ+ community when she came out as pansexual in 2015 — faced backlash online for her comment about Siwa. 9 Jojo Siwa with her ex Kath Ebbs. Again JoJo being with Chris doesn't erase or change her attraction to women. Pride month should be about celebrating all members of the LGBT+ community, not about making jibes like this,' one fan tweeted. 'That video her making jokes at jojo siwa's expense is not cool at all. It makes her seem kinda like a bully in that clip,' another fan wrote. 9 Miley Cyrus seen in New York City on June 5. 'Y'all forget that Miley has also dated men and women, she isn't 'clocking' anyone for being fake or making fun of bi people or dismissing bi/pan people etc Miley is not being biphobic here, it's just a joke,' a fan wrote on X. A different user tweeted, 'Miley & Jojo are literally friends irl. Jojo is the biggest Miley fan and Miley is always supporting Jojo. She's just joking with HER FRIEND & HER COMMUNITY that you DON'T own.' 9 JoJo Siwa and Miley Cyrus in a photo from 2020. itsjojosiwa/Instagram The Post has reached out to Siwa's rep for comment. A rep for Cyrus couldn't be reached. Last year, Siwa told US Weekly that Cyrus 'reached out' to her to show support. She even read part of the text that was sent to her via Cyrus' assistant. 9 Miley Cyrus performs at the 2017 Capital Pride Concert in Washington, DC. These moves are giving girl,'' Siwa read. 'And then she said, 'Loving you, rooting for you, cheering you on from the sidelines forever, Miley.'' Since confirming her romance with Hughes, 32, Siwa has opened up about the complexities of her sexuality. 'It's really hard because people tear it apart. I understand if you have no context why people tear things apart… there's people going through this same thing that I'm going through,' she said in a June 3 interview with Billboard. 9 Chris Hughes and JoJo Siwa in bed. Last month, Siwa gushed over her 'beautiful' relationship with Hughes in an exclusive interview with The Post. 9 JoJo Siwa and Chris Hughes. chrishughesofficial/Instagram Advertisement 'Chris is literally, like, [my] best friend, family. I will absolutely be seeing him when I go to the UK,' Siwa stated. 'That man has changed my life and I will stand my feet on the ground and I'll say that.' 'He is meant to be in my life,' she added.

Looking back on Cumbria Pride as we celebrate LGBTQ culture

June is Pride Month, and we're remembering how we've celebrated the LGBTQ community, especially at the county's flagship event, Cumbria Pride. The New York City march, promoted as 'Christopher Street Liberation Day', alongside the parallel marches in Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, marked a watershed moment for LGBT rights. He noted that while the first marches were more akin to a protest than a celebration, they helped to remind people of LGBT communities and how they may include one's family and friends. While many Pride celebrations around the world are held in June, some cities vary the observation at different times, partially due to local weather conditions.
