Vidiyal Payanam: Stalin gets first-hand feedback
An official stated that while travelling from the Secretariat to the Anna Centenary Library, the CM boarded route number 32B — running from Vallalalar Nagar to Vivekananda Illam — at the Omandurar Government Estate bus stop. During the journey, he spoke with woman commuters and enquired about the scheme's impact as it enters its fifth year since implementation.
The woman commuters shared that the initiative has helped them save around Rs 2,000 per month, which they now use for essential expenses like healthcare, education and others. The CM also directed the bus crew to ensure that buses halt at designated stops so women can fully benefit from the scheme.
Out of a total of 214 new buses, 27 were allocated to SETC, 114 to Villupuram TNSTC, 10 to Salem, 31 to Coimbatore, 14 to Madurai and 18 to the Tirunelveli division. Of these, 70 buses are ordinary services operating under the Magalir Vidiyal Payanam scheme, according to an official statement.
The DMK government took office, 3,727 new buses have been introduced and 1,500 existing buses have been refurbished, the statement said.

Chennai: NHAI Clears Six-Lane Flyover From Poonamallee To Maduravoyal, Full Details Inside
Last Updated: One lane will be used for piling and pier works, while 10 lanes, including service lanes, will remain open. Vehicles entering Chennai from Bengaluru, Krishnagiri, and Vellore will soon get much-needed relief. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has cleared the construction of a six-lane elevated corridor from Poonamallee to Maduravoyal, stretching 8.1km at a cost of Rs 1,250 crore. As per TOI, the project, tendered earlier this week, will feature entry and exit points only at its ends and will be toll-charged. According to NHAI officials, work is expected to begin within three months, with a completion timeline of two-and-a-half years. How Will It Change Travel? Currently, the Poonamallee–Maduravoyal stretch sees around 90,000 vehicles every day, causing long delays at busy junctions. Once complete, the new flyover is expected to transform travel time into the city. In the future, this corridor will connect with another planned 13km stretch from Outer Ring Road (ORR) to Sriperumbudur. Together, the two routes will enable commuters to cover 22km in less than 20 minutes, compared to the current one-hour slog. Project director I S Janakumaran assured that traffic movement will not be heavily affected. Construction will take place by closing one lane at a time, while leaving 10 lanes, including service lanes, open for vehicles. The Chennai Port is also expected to benefit, as the corridor will support faster cargo movement, making full use of its 135 MTPA handling capacity. Local residents have welcomed the project but voiced concerns about delays and service lanes. Many feel that the three-year construction timeline is too long and want NHAI to speed up the work while also improving service roads. Some also demanded early connectivity with the 262km Chennai–Bengaluru Expressway, so that commuters benefit immediately once the larger highway opens. This is not an isolated project. NHAI has already completed an 84km stretch of National Expressway-7 in Bengaluru, with further works underway in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The ambitious upgrades are expected to finish by 2026. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. 350 Helicopter Trips Later: Abandoned Island Is Now The World's Most Exclusive Party Spot
Last Updated: A derelict fort on Thorne Island in Wales was transformed into a luxury party venue by an ex-software engineer. It's now up for sale for £3 million after five years of restoration Once a lonely island with nothing more than a crumbling Napoleonic fort, Thorne Island has now been transformed into a lavish party destination reminiscent of a James Bond film, all thanks to the vision and persistence of a former software engineer, Mike Connor. A Bold Investment In 2017, Mike spotted the remote island on a YouTube video. At the time, the only structure was a derelict fort once used for military defence. Captivated by its potential, he purchased Thorne Island for just £55,500 (approximately Rs 6.53 crore). Rather than leaving it as a private retreat, Mike set out to completely renovate the site, investing over £2 million (approx. Rs 23.52 crore) to revive the structure. Now, after five years of dedication and transformation, the island is back on the market, this time for £3 million (around Rs 35.25 crore). A Five-Year Labour Of Love Transforming the crumbling fortress into a high-end private venue took five years, during which Mike poured in both time and money. The island, once deserted and fortified, is now equipped to host up to 800 guests, offering a 24-hour immersive experience for those seeking total seclusion with luxury. Mike's solution? An impressive 350 helicopter trips in just two days, ferrying everything needed to complete the renovation. Inside The Revamped Fort The fort is now almost unrecognisable. Inside, it features bright and spacious rooms, wood-burning stoves, spiral staircases, mezzanine bedrooms, and modern bathroom facilities. The property includes: An Exclusive Arrival Experience There is no conventional access to Thorne Island. Guests arrive either by boat or helicopter, echoing the mystery and glamour of an Agatha Christie novel or a Bond movie. Once there, they're free to party without neighbours, curfews, or noise restrictions. Up For Sale: A One-Of-A-Kind Opportunity Now listed for £3 million (Rs 35.25 crore), the property has estate agents excited about its unmatched features, location, and potential. A rare blend of history, exclusivity, and modern luxury, Thorne Island stands as a testament to how far vision — and a bit of madness — can go.
