DMK's student wing holds protest in Coimbatore against Palaniswami's remarks on temple funds

The Hindu6 days ago
The DMK's student wing held a protest in Coimbatore on Monday condemning AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami's remarks on the use of temple funds for educational institutions. The demonstration, held at Tatabad in Coimbatore city, also criticised the BJP-led Union government's education policies.
Led by student wing secretary R. Rajiv Gandhi, the protest saw participation from party MPs K. Prakash and Ganapathi P. Rajkumar, district secretaries, and office-bearers of the students' wing.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Rajiv Gandhi said Mr. Palaniswami had remained silent during his tenure as Chief Minister on issues such as NEET and the National Education Policy, and was now criticising the use of temple funds without understanding their purpose. He alleged that the BJP was scripting Mr. Palaniswami's statements and accused him of aligning with RSS-backed narratives.
The protesters also criticised the withdrawal of scholarships that were earlier available to minority students under schemes named after A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Maulana Azad. They said the DMK government had stepped in to support the affected students.
Slogans were raised condemning Mr. Palaniswami and the Union government, with participants rejecting what they described as politically motivated narratives against the Dravidian model of governance.

Jagan slams Midhun Reddy's arrest, says it's ‘political conspiracy'

Vijayawada: Former chief minister and YSRCP president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has strongly condemned the arrest of party MP PV Midhun Reddy, calling it "politically motivated and illegal". He described the arrest as a deliberate attempt by the TDP-led govt to silence public representatives who stand by the people. Midhun Reddy, a three-time Lok Sabha member, has allegedly been falsely implicated through forced confessions. "This is a targeted act of political vendetta by the TDP govt to cover up its own scams and failures. The alleged liquor scam is nothing but a manufactured narrative, created purely for media theatrics and to divert attention from real issues. The entire case is built on statements extracted under pressure, threats, third-degree torture, and also through bribes and inducements," said Jagan on social media platform-X. He said that the fact that Naidu himself is on bail with respect to a case on issues pertaining to liquor policy during 2014 - 19 itself, is an irrefutable evidence as to why he is stooping so low. The fact that he wants to nullify his case for acts during 2014-19 and also justify his policy now for 2024- 29, he is finding fault with the policy formulated by the YSRCP govt. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "What is more alarming is that, while falsely accusing YSRCP leaders of a liquor scam, the current TDP-led coalition is reviving the very corrupt liquor practices that the YSRCP govt had dismantled. The belt shops and illegal liquor outlets named permit rooms have returned. While undoing YSRCP government's successful deeds of shutting down thousands of such belt shops and permit rooms and also reducing the liquor outlets significantly, the present govt is now encouraging permit rooms, belt shops, backdoor liquor sales beyond MRP and weakening regulatory enforcement," charged Jagan. He alleged that corruption and mafia have crept back into the process of awarding wine shop licenses, and thereby placement of orders to the distilleries, undoing the transparent govt shops system they put in place in 2019. He alleged that Naidu stalled investigations into those serious corruption cases against him and his close associates after coming into power. He said that YSRCP leaders are being arrested not because they are guilty, but because the party remains deeply rooted in the hearts of the people. "This is not a legal process. It is a political witch-hunt aimed at destabilizing a strong opposition," said Jagan.

Chennai cyber crime cops quiz Madurai Adheenam

1 2 Madurai: A Chennai cyber crime police team on Sunday conducted inquiry with the 293rd pontiff of Madurai Adheenam, Sri La Sri Harihara Sri Gnana Sambandha Desika Swamigal, at the Adheenam mutt in Madurai in connection with the case against him for his alleged provocative remarks that could incite conflict between religious communities. The Adheenam had claimed a conspiracy to murder him, suggesting links to Pakistan and Muslim men, following a road accident at Ulundurpet in Kallakurichi on May 2. Though his claims were later found to be entirely false after a police investigation into the road accident involving his car, his claims had by then been widely shared on media and social media platforms. On Saturday, the Chennai principal sessions court granted the Adheenam conditional anticipatory ball. On Sunday, a Chennai cyber crime police team came to the mutt near Meenakshi Amman temple and conducted an inquiry with the Adheenam. His advocate told reporters that the Adheenam fully cooperated with the inquiry despite undergoing a surgery recently and suffering from illness. "The police did not permit even a helper inside during the inquiry which lasted around 45 minutes. The Adheenam told us that he answered all the questions of the police," added the advocate. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Meanwhile, BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran hit out at the police and state govt for 'going after' elderly spiritual and religious leaders and gurus like the Madurai Adheenam even when they are aged and suffering from illness.
